I've shot this Remington .357 round for close to 30 years for hunting. Always get great velocity and preformance. It'll drop medium sized game in its tracks. It'll shoot 1350 ish fps in a 6 inch revolver and 1650 ish fps in a 16 inch barrel lever gun. I'm still shooting stuff that was made in late 80s.

Thanks Tools. In the early to mid Eighties, it was thought the power of a 357 and a 38 sp +P in a short 2" barrel, was the same. Every gun shop I walked into, told be I needed a 6" barrel in a 357 to see it's potential. Obviously, a 357 Magnum is potent in a short barrel as well.

@@ToolsandTargets a .357 Magnum in a 4-inch barrel is no slouch either!!! I would've gotten the 6-inch variant of the Ruger GP100, but they were sadly out of stock at that time, hence the reason why I got the 4-inch version instead.

@@ctusser Where did the myth originate and why was it so wide spread? In the early to mid 1980s, every gun shop I knew, said the same thing. I believe I may even have read an article stating the same thing. I do believe a 6" barrel is needed to realize the full potential of a 357, but it is still very potent in 2" to 4" barrels as well.
@ctusser
@ctusser 9 ай бұрын
@@danpatton3891, I doubt anyone knows where it originated, but it was undoubtedly an easy rationalization to adopt for the recoil sensitive masses when snubby revolvers were the norm for concealed carry. I’m sure it spread like wildfire and if you’ve shot a hot .357 load in a small snubby and then a tame .38 back to back you can understand the temptation to want to believe that even though your hand just proved it wrong.

These are the exact same loads Remington has sold for years with that 125gr SJHP. And I know a lot of people are gonna call this bullet failure because of the jacket separation and fragmentation (or Fragspansion as you like to call it🤣) But I disagree. I've used these Remington SJHP bullets in both.357 and .44 magnums for years with fantastic results. I've used both the 125gr and 158gr to shoot a lot of stuff over the years. Everything from smallish like woodchucks to a couple of big bucks. The 158 I think is probably better for the bigger stuff as it almost always exits on deer and does absolutely devastating tissue damage. And from what I've seen the 125gr do in everything up to and including deer size game I have no doubt it would act the same in 2 legged targets! This load from a full sized4"-6" revolver actually reaches Remington's advertised velocity of 1450fps and in my closed breach 6" Coonan is over 1600! It's my go to load in .357 magnum and always will be! Great video as always! Thanks Tools!!!!

I've heard people say out of a 2" barrel there's not much difference. This proves otherwise. Thinking about getting a 2" .357. But it would be all steel, like that Taurus 605. 24 ounces. My LCR 38 is 13.5 ounces & it's snappy. A guy at the indoor range asked what I was shooting. I said Ruger LCR 38. He said it was loud. Well, the .357 will be twice as loud.

Just my 30 years personal experience from handloading and shooting the Remington 125 grain SJHP bullet in 38 Special, 38 Special +P and 357 Magnum. The 125 grain SJHP will usually give moderate expansion in bare ballistic gel blocks when driven out with a velocity as low as 850 f.p.s. However, the muzzle velocity has to be at least 1,000 to 1,070 f.p.s. for the bullet to expand reliably if the gel block is covered by clothing (such as 3 layers of denim which I usually use).

companies trying to capitalize on the popularity of the 357 were chambering revolvers in frames that couldn't hold up to the punishment. The response to this was that the loads of the 357 were reduced for safety. I'm wondering if the dissapointing results of the modern 357 compared to the legends are the result. I'd love to see some original loadout results. I know the standard load back in the day was 158 grain projectile at a touch over 1500fps out of an 8 inch barrel. we don't see that very often now.

For historical context , these loads are a time capsule of late 1970's ( good for the day ) Duty Ammo . Duty revolvers were mostly 4 inch . Heavy clothing barriers hadn't been thought of for several years yet . From a 4 inch , the .38 +P would have expanded . Bare gel , or a single tee shirt , probably 50/ 50 some expansion, definitely major deformation, even with 2 inch . Trivia - For a few years , R-P offered a Third variant of this ( fourth if you count non +P .38 ) , the " Medium Velocity " .357 Magnum . The trivia part ? The full power .357 from 2 inch bbl gives similar velocities as the " Medium " from 4 inch .

That'll teach me to comment before the end ...The answer is yes! I carry this load whenever i carry .357. I like the gel testing as far as being able to compare one round to another but it really doesn't give you any idea how these bullets will actually act in a live tissue and bone target. Ive seen this 125gr bullet punch through both sides of an average whitetail and ive seen it only penetrate 10 or so inches and leave the biggest wound cavity ive seen from a handgun. Ive seen it leave a baseball sized hole in both coyotes and woodchucks and drop them absolutely dead where they stood. Some people will call this bad performance but its not bad performance when it puts the intended target down quickly and cleanly no matter what it does! Id like to see you test the 180gr and . 240gr .44 magnum rounds as well. The 240 is another spectacular performer on deer sized game with the 180 being a little too light and not quite penetrating enough for my liking. But i think it would make a great defensive round if you felt you had to use a .44 magnum!😂

The advatages of 357 in snubs is so thoroughly documented but the myths still persist. The HTP is just the same bullet in a nickle plated case as the regular Rem 125 SJHP but i have found them to be loaded to lower velocity than the regular green box stuff by around 100 to 150 fps (maybe a lower flash powder?) The 38 bullet works well in a snub with that extra velocity, especially, when striking barriers such as a sternum. It also is designed for penetration first. So the bare gel test does not tell the whole story, but enough to let me know I will take the 357 all day. I prefer to carry a modern 66-8 K frame (much beefed up over my older versions in forcing cone, frame, and lockup) 2.75 with the regular Rem Load when i revolver carry. It is hard to explain to the dot disabled trigger toddler SPUDS that well placed power beats mag dumping for self defense.

That +p round is closer to a 38 spec standard ball round that a 357 mag. Then again as I've heard you say, and I agree, I prefer penetration over expansion, the +p round would have it's place. I find it pretty cool that despite a quazi pitiful muzzle velocity a 38 ball round had that good of penetration. The 38 special served both police and military well for decades and is still a quite effective self defense round, and before someone says it it was the 38 lc that had trouble with stopping power in the Moro rebellion in the philippines. Short Answer - The 125gr .38 +P works better from a 4 inch . Back in the Late Revolver Era , the Third most common Duty ammo were the various 125gr JHP ( with R-P , Federal, and W-W performing similarly) . From 4 inch ( and occasional hold out 6 inch ) guns it expanded , and gave reasonably adequate real world performance. 2 inch , not so much , as seen here .

The armory tested that ammo for expansion although I am not sure on what kind of target medium was used. Your test proved that the 125 grain +P will not expand from a 2" barrel so I assume the armory came up to the same conclusion during testing, and rejected that load. Cuz I've been longing to see which would be better a 3-inch short barrel revolver with 357 Magnum full power loads, or a Glock 33 or something comparable that shoots 357 Sig with a comparable full power load, obviously same weight if that was possible and just see would you rather carry nine 357 sig or would you rather carry five or six 357 magnum full power loads, cylinders and speed loaders, 357sig and magazines and easy reloads. That is the question?????😮

Good test! Frankly it looks like Remington switched the bullets between these two. It looks like the .357 with it's bigger hollow-point might actually expand out of the .38 Special, and the bullet from the .38 might not break up as bad in the .357. Honestly a little underwhelmed with Remington-brand defensive ammo. Oh, and I agree the .38 +P definitely did not perform as I would have expected.

I've been wavering back and forth between carrying 110 gr. 38 +P and 110 gr. 357. The 357 is more comfortable and less snappy than the +P. Now I'm thinking the 125 gr. 357 might be the perfect balance in a short barrel in regards to less recoil but excellent performance. I'm open to any other suggestions or comments. Thanks, great job.

Seems like Remington got it backwards. They should have put the projectile with the bigger cavity on the slower .38 to lessen the under/non expansion and the smaller cavity on the. 357 to prevent overexpansion/fragspansion. Neither seems that good to me.

If i remember correctly, .38 Special was originally loaded with black powder. The standard psi for .38 is around 18,000 and for +p it's 20,000. The .357 was designed to go through car doors and bullet proof vests. The psi for those are around 60,000. I've heard it was originally higher but that was damaging small framed revolvers. The .357 was designed to be longer so it couldn't fit in a .38, again if i remember correctly, or wasn't misinformed.

Those are my go to .357 rounds. Still among the best. Will fragment a little out of 4-6 inch barrels. I use buffalo bore 38 plus p. All the commercial stuff is just too low velocity. Have not tried underwood but am sure its pretty hot. These .357 rounds are virtually unchanged since the 70’s. The 158 round is excellent as well even out of a 2 inch. Both expand through clothing in tests and in the old days a lot of .357 failed against clothing. Any full power .357 will get 1200-1250 out of a 2 inch barrel, but there are alot of lower velocity mid-range loads out there that may or may not perform from a 2 inch barrel. This load used to be a deal for the price of a 50 round box. You could get .357 125 grain softpoint UMC yellowbox to duplicate point of impact for training that were a good deal cheaper priced.

I'm sure you would really feel the spice on the 357 if you shot it from a S&W 340PD. What happened in the gel was pretty much what I expected. The 38 Special pretty much needs a full 4" barrel to perform. It would certainly benefit from a larger hollow point cavity like the 357 projectile has. The 357 seats deeper into the case so that the overall length fits in the cylinder of the revolver.

That magnum round did very well considering it was from such a short barrel. I can remember gun magazines back in the '80s wherein pundits were saying that you HAD to have a 6" barrel to get any performance from a .357 and that folks carrying 4" tubes were just wasting their time, never mind shorter barrels. LOL ... I guess they were wrong. ;) Remington 125 are what I have in my .357s right now. It's good stuff. For my .38s, I'll stick to Federal Nyclads and Winchester Silvertips. ;)

It seems like it would make more sense to have the 38spl projectile for this round be more similar to the 357 projectile with the lower jacket and wider cavity. 357mag being as powerful as it is doesnt need nearly as much help expanding projectiles as the 38spl so its odd to me that the projectiles are designed that way. But im not an engineer so what do i know

About what I expected to see Honestly when you were showing the difference between the 357 mag and the 38 Special bullet design, my first thought was that they should be swapped and I think that would improve the performance of both, allowing the 357 to stay together better, and the 38 a better chance of expansion
@squibload58

Both performed as expected. I like the penetration shown by the 38 Spl +P. I gave up on HPs a long time ago. So I never experience hollow point failure. I only use hard cast, powder coated LSWC or RNFP bullets. The FBI standard has only resulted in a race to see who can develop the most expensive HP and then sell 20 of them for more than the cost of 50 bullets that have always gotten the job done. Screw 'em.

yeah you have fun when you use those rounds for self defense and they go straight through what you’re shooting at and hit a bystander or random person. there’s a reason hollow points are the only ammo you should carry for self defense. especially hard cast that is the dumbest idea i’ve ever heard.
@squibload58

@@acid6urns The 4th Rule of Firearms Safety is not just for hunting or target practice or competition "Always be sure of your target and what lies beyond it. It's for gunfights too. So, you're wrong. Everyone is wrong about that. I don't care which 'expert' you ask, "Will you shoot at a bad guy with your hollowpoint ammo if there is a chance of hitting an innocent person behind him?" The police always carry hollowpoints, but you still hear them screaming, "Watch out for crossfire!" They refuse to fire when someone is behind the guy they need to shoot. I have that same self discipline. Go ahead, ask Massad Ayoob or anybody you want. He will move to another position if the innocent guy doesn't get out of the line of fire. And that nullifies the argument against using HPs for fear of pass throughs. I will continue to carry 230 gr LRN or FMJ in my 1911. More than 30 inches of penetration in gel looks good to me. I have no concerns about inadequate penetration.

@@squibload58 yawn. in most self defense scenarios you don’t GET to move you buffoon. also hollow points actually transfer their energy to the target instead of just poking a hole. you can make excuses all you want but you are quite literally handicapping yourself for no reason and exponentially increasing your liability.

The Remington 125 grain 357 Mag SJHP round through a 4 INCH barrel has been noted to have a 96% one-stop shot rating. This and Federal versions are the notorious "King of the Street" round back when law enforcement carried this in the 70's and 80's before switching over to 9mm semi autos. if you carry a 2 inch Belly Gun revolver just get a 38. The 357 round is rated 1450 FPS. Kind of a silly video.
