It’s no secret that I have a lifelong passion for clothing - but even I can admit that sometimes I hold onto pieces that I know I’ll never wear again. For today’s Closet Confessions, I’m taking you with me as I finally tackle the chaos that is my storage unit. While many of the pieces I own still bring me joy, it’s important that I part ways with neglected pieces to make room for a curated collection that resonates with the woman I am today. Of course, some things must stay no matter how ruthless I try to be - clothing that still works well with the rest of my wardrobe, pieces reserved for specific occasions, or cherished items with stories to tell. As for everything else, however, it’s officially time to go...

Have some MAJOR regrets about culling w/a friend😂. 😍Adore her, but she was RUTHLESS for all the WRONG reasons. Allowed her own style agenda & motivations to get in the mix. 🥺As a result felt PEER PRESSURED into donating statement pieces I adored that she NEVER approved of in the 1st place. These were high quality garments that 💯% came back en vogue too🤣. LESSON: Pick a person like Molly or Gemima who supports your personal ethos. Her team delights in her luxe maximalism. They enjoy her style, analysis & process. A militant minimalist won't share the same value for putting high quality gear on pause ⏸️ that she'll wish to rotate back in at another stage ♻️). Stick w/someone who understands that fashion cycles around 🔁. Also pick a person who knows YOU & YOUR style preferences INSIDE & OUT. Someone who will respect & honor that. Omg that skirt at 22:03 from Donna Karen is pretty much identical to my Trinny and Susannah skirt that I got from their range in Freeman's catalogue about 25/30 years ago! 😳 My boyfriend bought it for me for Christmas one year, I must've been around 18 or 19 I think...I have kept it all these years as I adore it!! (I kept the boyfriend too haha!!) I haven't been able to fit into it for about 20 years but I tried it on the other day as I was culling my wardrobe and I could actually fit into it! It's so beautifully made that I never wanted to get rid, love it!! ❤

💯% agree 🤣. Greater regrets for the things I ELIMINATED (& later had to replace) vs the ones I STORED. Had a couple seasons of big weight fluctuations〰️ storage saved my bacon both times. It allowed me a fresh "new" wardrobe w/o breaking the bank💰. LESSONS: ¹Challenge yourself to style pieces that you're on the fence about w/your current set up. ²♻️As Trinny does, imagine how you could alter items to fit you & your lifestyle better. (Loving the lapel/pin hack to refresh her blazers.)⏱️Give yourself a time limit to do both. 🔄 SEASONAL ROTATION. Everyone needs a storage space to temporarily tuck clothes away. It might be under your bed in vacuum bags, high in a closet, or in a cedar trunk instead of going off-site. *Keep inventory. Number your bag, box, or bin & keep note of where store. That way, you can locate items in a pinch. REMEMBER: Sometimes you need a 🤞BREAK📦 from an item vs 👋BREAK UP💔. Snap a 📷pic & keep a digital file for reference. Think it's important to review upcoming trends as inspo for 🛒shopping your closet (or storage). CREATE SEASONAL CAPSULES. Pull out the silhouettes, accessories, & colors that are hot🔥. This exercise will get you to review your wardrobe w/a fresh 👁👁eye. It will make you look & feel like a ✨️new✨️ person too. It’s not just Lila you are keeping for, it’s future generations. I grew up wearing key pieces from my grandmother’s wardrobe and still wear unique items into my 50’s. I now store items that a future grandchild might find sartorially interesting.

So many beautiful things! I can understand your hesitation to get rid of things that you may want to wear in the future especially when you've had regret about getting rid of something in the past. But passing it on to your daughter is a wonderful idea. I don't have anywhere near your collection but I have always bought well made things in mostly classic styles and most from before the prevalence of fast fashion. I donated so many wonderful pieces that I still wish I'd kept not realising that they probably had generous seam allowances or could be remodelled or passed on to a friend or relative. So many young people are after vintage clothes compared to when we were in our 20s and 30s. I recently did a cull and passed on the better pieces to my 18yr old niece - she was so happy and found lots to keep but also could sell what she didn't want. I was happy to be certain the clothes wouldn't go to landfill.
