What stakes? Everybody else is taking care of the battle, and neither Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon have any personal connection with Maul. That's why, unlike previous duels up to this point, the characters don't say anything: They have nothing talk about. The setting is preposterous and over the top. The music is absolutely top-notch though. And the fight choreography is also good, albeit geared towards actual swords and staves, instead of weapons that are effectively massless and can cut through practically anything.

I remember being 12 years old in 1999 when this came out and my friends had I had to wait almost 2 weeks after opening weekend to see it because it kept selling out. When we got to finally see it, all everyone told us was be prepared for the best lightsaber duel you’ll ever see. As 12 year old we were on cloud 9 at the time. Now at 37 I’m still on cloud 9 every time i watch this scene 👏🏽

Yeah, he didn't realize that obi had momentarily gotten so mad about his master's death that he gave into the dark side briefly, and giving him just enough advantage to make some progress. Maul on the other hand got arrogant, and it cost him the fight. Obi learned that he shouldn't give into the darkness against a sith because he almost lost, and he learned that the low ground jump thing was only a one off lucky move, but he might want to prepare for an attack like it at a later time.

I think I see some hate behind Obi Wan deafeating Darth-maul from a sure-death position. Darthmaul did not believe he could be beaten. Therefore, he did not see any way he could be beaten, and his guard was down. Obi-Wan knew he was dealing with the most powerful enemy there ever was and was ready for anything. You're welcome.

Old Star Wars and modern Star Wars have opposite problems. Old Star Wars would create these great background character who were under utilized, and we never got to see their true capabilities. Boba Fett is iconic, but he got maybe 10 minutes of screentime, and never really fought anyone. Modern Star Wars on the other hand will always retcon things so everyone's favourite characters never die, so there are never any real stakes.
