Only in Canada could we take something (that any other country would consider embarassing) and turn it into a totally appropriate gag to start the closing cerimony with. I loved it. Neil - was the icing on the cake to me. When he sang - I cry. Whenever I watch the clip of him; I always cry because it was just so simple, so Canadian. I miss the games - such an incredible time. I hope they come again to somewhere else in Canada so we can feel this way again...

@@Nathaniel3040 No doubt they could host it again. All the venues are technically there. Maybe a different venue is needed for Curling this time. Add a new Olympic Village, operating costs and you have an Olympics that could happen again without any need for taxpayer expense.

Very good idea to allow people to see the whole events and ceremonies. Each country always gives its best and show several pieces of their faces and culture. Vancouver's closing ceremony was a moment of joy and the relationship we can have with the nature, in Sotchi in was more emotional. Now we have to wait 4 more years to see what Pyeong Chang will do for South Korea.

And in my experience to this day IMO it remains the best performance of it I've yet heard. +brent mims Brent Mims is correct about David Atkins magnificent staging of the opening & closing ceremonies for the Sydney and Vancouver Olympics. It's interesting that I find myself watching it again, five years later. It was that special. Also of note too, that the Australian summer Olympics is the only other one that I remember fondly, in that it seemed to come off without any hint of a snag or controversy. While the Chinese Olympic ceremony was quite spectacular in scale, the external controversies seem to always muddy the beauty of the efforts. The simplicity and technical wonder (employing superbly timed & immense laser motion graphics) is mind blowing in the Vancouver ceremonies, and was the first time this state of the art system was used on such a grand scale before an international audience. Sydney & Vancouver - both ebullient examples of enthusiastic showmanship embedding warm memories thereafter.

Who is here, 12 years later, and watching the humour of "fixing" the faulty cauldron? From Wikipedia: "...A joke was made about the hydraulic system failure with the indoor cauldron in the opening ceremony. Electrical sparks, a fake chicken and feathers shot out of the hole where the fourth arm would have risen. After this, Québécois clown and mime Yves Dagenais, dressed in workmen's clothing, climbed out of the hole, plugged two long cords together, and pretended to pull the fourth pillar out as it emerged. Dagenais then "summoned" Catriona Le May Doan (who appeared from underneath the stage via an elevated trap door), holding a lit torch in her hand. She looked around, acting bewildered, and then saw Dagenais, and he happily presented to her the emerging fourth pillar. He then wiped his brow with a red handkerchief to signify a job well done and walked off the stage. After the pillar was in place, Le May Doan, who had been left out of the lighting of the cauldron in the opening ceremony because of the failure, saluted the audience by holding her torch in the air, walked over toward the pillar and was finally able to light the cauldron, to great fanfare from the audience. With the entire cauldron lit, Le May Doan saluted the audience again and then descended back underneath the stage...". What a classy way to resolve and open the Closing Ceremonies, in such a clever manner! I'll never forget it.
