As someone who does not struggle with that, my preference would always be natural fibres (or high natural fibre content) over synthetic. But we can have our differences of opinion and that's totally fine 😊 I'm glad you're able to find clothes that you like, that make you feel amazing whilst also being comfortable for you to wear x

Fully agree re short-sleeve knits. I have never found myself wanting to reach for them. If it's cold enough that you want a thick knit, you probably want it to have long sleeves!

Actually ... I have begun wanting these. Not really bulky, but warmer than your ordinary cotton tee. Why? Well when I am doing dishes, or something else tjat is dirty or wet, but still chilly, I do not want to have to manage the sleeves all the time. Otherwise ... it is mostly silly.

sounds more like individual preferences :) i've always loved short sleeved knits! I'm happy to see them in stores again. I'm 60 yrs old so I've been through the fashion cycles a few times...i like these knits to keep my neck warmed and most importantly it gives a modern chic look.

So agree with the polyester situation. I think that the stores think customers won't notice when they reduce the wool content and put more plastic. They still call it a wool sweater though. Charging more for it too. Now I check the labels very thoroughly. Your detailed Vlog was exactly what I needed. Not buying anything in the black Friday except a much needed robe for my husband. I 100% agree with the first point, with merino short sleeves that are very tight to the body I can understand it more because those have more versatility to work as layering pieces that will keep you warm while not being too bulky to wear under other clothes, but I don't understand when brands put out those short puffed sleeved cashmere cardigans etc. And in regards to the bulky scarf, I've seen so many people say they hate them, but as someone who moved to Canada from a very warm country those are the only kinds of scarves I feel comfortable wearing outside during the winter. I'm also short and I even don't really care about it "overwhelming" my frame, I think the big scarf looks very cool

Totally agree about everything but woolen fabric of trousers. I'm from Russia and we have extremely cold winters here, wearing several layers of clothing. So woolen pants are so good for this! I usually wear them with woolen tights.

thanks for the new vid helen!most vloggers talk about basic, neutrals, “classic”, “capsule must have”-but i see them dress all similarly 😅. sometimes they give wrong impression to viewers for being unrealistic- some people wear scrubs 5x a week, lounge wear for weekends and maybe left with Sunday to dress up for church and grocery! Here's some things about short sleeve knits: it depends upon where you work. For four years, I worked in a building (in the US near Canada) that was continually underheated. I guess they were trying to save money. But literally, your hands froze at the keyboard after a couple of hours. So I had short sleeve knits that I wore under blazers and a set of fingerless gloves (actually, they had partial fingers, but were bare from the top joint on up). So my guess is that consider your environment before deciding. What's right for one person in one climate might be wrong for another in a different climate.

Me too re the boots with wide ankles - I have skinny ankles, and if the boots are too wide, my leg looks like s stick in a bucket! I hate it. I wish more designers would make styles with stretch rather than starting off really wide.

I'm a knitter, and it's changed how I buy clothes. I think you're correct that brands don't use 100% natural fiber content for the price. Also, nylon, acrylic, and polyester can be added to minimize pilling. Many consumers think pilling from natural fibers means it's cheap or not durable (which isn't true, but it's the perception) so I wonder if brands add it to avoid complaints about poor quality. Of course, 100% merino is anything but poor quality! And then anything that's 80% acrylic won't have the many benefits of a natural fiber.

Merino is long, fine fibre, other types of sheep sourced wool are not as long as merino. Long fibre doesn't pill!

I agreed with a lot of things but not the short sleeved knitwear. I wear short sleeved knits all the time, I find them really good because they keep my core warm when I'm outside but when I'm indoors where it's warmer I'm not as hot, if that makes sense😂😂😆

I live in the upper Midwest of the US, so I get to REALLY bundle up during our winter. But even here it can be tough to wear the extra warm fabrics as a base layer because heating can vary indoors and because you want to strip layers right when you come inside from the cold.

Try wearing an alpaca or wool blend short sleeve top with a long sleeve t shirt underneath, and under a short leather jacket. It's great for in between weather and if it gets warmer you take off the jacket, and if warmer still you take off the short sleeve. It's great for autumn or spring in southern states of Australia. I despise anything with elastine; it inevitably stretches and loses shape. Massively. And it's everywhere. Always read the labels and the care labels. If you buy clothes with the intention of having them for years then AVOID elastine! There's nothing wrong with the fair Isle sweater you bought, it's less edgy than the one you were inspired by, sure. But that one is rather huge and if you have a smaller frame risk being overwhelmed. However you could have put yours with navy or denim instead of those rust coloured pants. Why are they in nearly every shot? It would have made you look taller to get continuity in the colour. I'd suggest you do this more often and if wearing the same colour seems naff then try a darker shade of that colour.. You wear contrasts and blame it on woollen weaves bulking your up, instead of worsted? Woollen is definitely warmer ...what are you on about?Thick woollen pants in an office will probably be too hot. But that's a general thing people vary in cold sensitivity. Just wear a smoother design line and go for less thick woollens ...they do vary within the woollen range. A blanket 'no' is not needed (pun?) and is confusing to others. Anyone only wearing a worsted suit is going to freeze in a proper winter that's what you layer under a woollen coat. Or you wear a sweater under a worsted trench coat for instance. But if you do that it's not going to work in air conditioning. Easier to layer. If you aren't tall avoid loud patterns, and don't break up your look by wearing extreme contrasting colours in top and bottom. Try some consistency. Those cowboy boots are absolutely wrong with the cute dress. Why? The boots are swimming on you and too tall. The No.1 rule is good fit. You don't want to look like you're wearing your parent's clothes. Never wear something that is wearing you. Those boots are an example. The grey sweater you're wearing is very bulky. it's not elongating at all. Try wearing a slightly darker colour grey in the pants it will help. And if you wear something larger on top go narrower in the pants. Bulk on bulk is why your'e bathing them at the waist and then the pants are gathered themselves too. There is so much to learn about fabrics, design, appropriate dressing. It's complicated but you're making a good start by starting a discussion on design and fabrics. There is also proportion and the best way to dress well is to know your own body type and be clear about what to avoid. it's how French women dress and it's the difference between trying to force yourself into something you like but isn't suitable, (fashion victim) or wearing what will emphasise your best points and be on point for your lifestyle, occasion, personality and of course the weather (style). It takes time to work this out.

The woolen trouser thing makes so much sense! I’ve tried so many pairs of Sezane trousers because I love the texture of the fabric, but they just never look good on me. Not elongating, as you say. I think they might work well for taller people but it’s not the best look for petites.

Yes - I’m almost 5’9” and I have 2 pairs of these types of Sezane wool trousers, and I love them. There are sooo many things that look silly on me because I am not petite - each shape and size has its silhouettes that work, and those that don’t.

I am allergic to wool so if I agree on avoiding synthetic clothing - I love cotton - and this season (autumn and winter) being my favorite so it’s hard to find beautiful jumpers. I can usually go with 5% of wool but I love turtlenecks so I have to try them one before. I do own a vintage cashmere coat (beautiful) and it’s fine because I wear clothes underneath. . Anyway I am a wool detector 😅 My Mom asks me to touch clothes when we shop because I can tell immediately if there’s wool in it 😅 I totally agree with you on the mid height ankle boots - not flattering at all ! As for the barrel pants I own a couple - one narrower at the ankles but I’m 5ft7 so I think it fit me better. I never have to tailor my pants/trousers for instance. I also agree on the short sleeves - my work office is really cold so I would never wear them. As for the big scarves, I am biased. I think it does look good depending on the coat and the style (The Olsen twin sisters come to mind). My best friend is 5ft3 and we agree upon the fact that being tall or petite does matter. We actually tried the same trousers last Friday and it looked totally different. My motto : try on and yes make sure you can wear them with you boots or jumpers you already own. Bonne semaine !

An idea for the short sleeved cardigan: could be styled over a dress- very cute. But you're right, this item is not very versatile. For the ankle lenghth boots: the only way to wear them ( for me) is under wide leg pants. And have them peeking out.

I'm on the opposite side of worsted/woolen spectrum: I have only one pair of worsted for these particular 5-10 days in a year when I need to have some meetings or presentations related to work. Otherwise, woolen and flannel are comfier and give somewhat more rustic/home vibes, of course in the right cut.

A lot of alpaca mohair fabrics can be scratchy irritating (esp mohair). However I've also seen a huge range so not all alpaca fabrics are scratchy. Some of them are the softest materials I've felt. Super annoying to buy online tho sometimes.

This content is so useful! Im from a tropical country, never had winter clothes, the most you'd need in my city is a cotton long sleeve you'd wear 2 weeks of the year maximum! Now I have trips planned to really cold destinations (anything bellow 20 C is cold to me! lol) and want to invest in smart pieces. For me, it’s all about the fiber content, I can’t wear any synthetics, even in blends. Every time I compromise on this, the item is a flop, regardless of how stylish it is. If I can’t tolerate wearing it, it’s a complete waste of money. I just had a weak moment and bought a “cute” knit dress from Mango. It not only makes me itch all over, I feel both really cold and sweaty in it, gross. By the time I took it off an hour later, I had a skin rash everywhere. I don’t know why I do this occasionally, I have to just stick to my requirements. Wool and cashmere are itchy, but they don’t cause that allergic reaction and they are breathable and warm. I wear a silk tee shirt under them to prevent the itching.

I agree with all your comments on boots. I love boots, but they must be (high, to cover by a few inches) ankle-length, knee-high or thigh-high, I don’t like those intermediate shaft heights. I don’t like wide-ankle fits or really, any wide places, they overemphasize my skinny legs. I wear mostly dresses and skirts, so I wear my taller boots a lot. They also have to have stable heels less than 3-inches high, 2-inches is ideal. Only genuine leather with rubber soles, too. I unknowingly bought a pair of shoes with plastic soles and immediately had a terrible slip and fall down a flight of stairs. I don’t know what idiot thought using plastic, which is always slippery, was a good idea! It never occurred to me that they might use it, so now I check to be sure the outer soles are genuine rubber, on all my footwear. It couldn’t have cost the brand more than a penny or two more for rubber, but that trivial savings could kill people and cost them millions in lawsuits.

thank you for mentioning the difference in warmth among different types of fabrics. I live in Southern Germany now, where the temperatures rarely go below -5 int he winter, and it rubs me the wrong way that the majority of winter sweaters I see here are cashmere. mind you, they are all 120-150 EUR cashmere, which is too thin and was either produced rather unethically or lacks quality. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but I read that natural cashmere can only be white/cream, beige/brown, grey and black. if a cashmere sweater is dyed, it means that the fibres were significantly processed and as a result weakened. for comparison I have a black 100% cashmere sweater from Inner Mongolia in China, and it is much thicker, non-transparent and looks more like a regular wool sweater rather than a think jumper that is supposed to be worn on the bare skin. there is a reason cashmere goats live in northern China, Mongolia and India, and merino wool sheep can be found in Spain and Australia. Of course, I am biased because I come from a much colder climate, but unless you are living in a cabin in Alps, you don't need a cashmere sweater to survive mild European winter! as a result, cashmere in Europe has become a luxury good which is jus a piece of status, thus taking resources from the regions where using this material is a matter of survival. again, these sweaters are cheap quality, tedious to take care of and don't last as long as they are supposed to.
