This is actually seriously brilliant- even in places where there is consistant water sources and rainfall the fog net concept can offset the "dry summer days and expand water use resillience and flexibility for everyone everywhere! There might not always be rain and "bodies of water" might be hard to reach or on private properties but moisture, "transevaporation" (by trees), dew and fog are massively more common and regular than rain so I'm really super excited to add my experimentation and contructions to this developing concept.

That is an ingenious idea. If only people with these ideas got together. Could you imagine if Mr Cruz linked up with a permiculture person like Geoff Lawton ? Even if those nets provided enough water for planting a garden, what about planting trees? Could they change the whole ecosystem in the area from desert to green? There are so many possibilities just from one simple but imaginative idea.

Nice project. Indeed. The next step is to invest 1 to 5 % of the harvested water to grow a pine tree (or any endemic plant) at the foot of each of these nets. So that when the plastic is used out, the plant is ready to do the job for the next generations. It only takes a Drip irrigation pipe plugged on the existing pipes. A leak would do. Most of the agriculture on the Island of Gran Canaria uses cloud water harvested by this pine tree : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_canariensis

@Shaheen_Hassan4 жыл бұрын
Rainfall is almost impossible in Peru's coast because of the atmospheric stability caused by cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. Planting trees in Peru's coast will do nothing. Trees should be planted in place where the atmosphere is conducive to rain formation so it can help increase rainfall.

@TejasM148 жыл бұрын
This project is great for who it is intended for. The very poor who have little chance of access to conventional water systems. But is this really a long term solution? No. The water captured from fog would be so little. And the idea isn't scalable at all. And this idea would require lots of space, which is only available in remote areas. But until water systems are installed, this is definitely better than nothing.
@Lexluthero1247 жыл бұрын
Hi, great input on the problem but actually, that's not true. This was done in Lima, which is part of the coastal zone. In that region, far away from downtown and at the skirts of forgotten hills/mountains, the thermometers are always marking levels of between 95 and 100% humidity on winter season... and the higher the house the colder and more humid it gets (beware: it's not a matter of high altitudes, we are pretty low actually). In America Latina it's not uncommon for houses to be all the way up on a hill. Of course it's forbidden by Law to live in such places due to its conditions but people go and take that land anyway. But back to the point, the cloud catchers are installed at the very top of that mountain, which most of the time is a huge wasteland as it's shown in the video, but more important it has too much humidity. With only four of those, in two days it can provide water for the plenty people living near the top, and they're the ones most likely to not receive any water for the infrastructure doesn't reach that far. So, you are right. It can't replace a traditional water system but it should be given proper recognition for the water it's not that little. It even fills full tanks on regular basics. This idea is made to work on what we called "cerros" and only in winter.

Water should be domestically free for everyone. But respect for the supply is also super important to keep from wasting it. I know too many people that take daily or twice daily showers, leave the taps on brushing their teeth, the sink just running while washing up, it's so wasteful, it's not about money. Just because it's paid for doesn't mean you should be wasteful. We luckily enjoy free water in Ireland but it was under threat once and could be again in the future if it's not something we fight for. Everyone needs water. It's not right to charge for it.
