Clouds and sky with watercolor - Painting wet in wet - Relaxing speedpaint

How to paint watercolor clouds. In this video, I am sharing how I created this sky painting. I find that to paint a dramatic sky with lots of clouds the easiest method is to wet the paper on both sides. This way, the paper stays wet for a really long time and allows you to work on the clouds for at least half-hour. It is very important to use 100% cotton paper. Other kinds of paper will get dry so quickly that you won't have time to do much painting.

Colors used: Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Siena, Indigo, Cobalt.
I use a variety of watercolor paint brands (Daniel Smith, Holbein, M.Graham, Nevskaya Palitra) but all of them are professional watercolors. I used to buy student-grade paints but now I stay away from them as they contain a lot of additives and little pigment. When painting, I had to apply so much paint just to get any pigment out of them. Professional paints seem to be more economical.
Paper: Arches 100% cotton 140lb cold press. You may use any brand you like but, most importantly, use 100% cotton.

Thanks! It's corrugated plastic, the stuff that garage sale signs are made of. I made it by gluing two of those signs together.

Я субтитры на русском тоже пишу 😊 Это зависит от того, какой синий и жёлтый использовать. Я для себя нашла, что кобальт синий и Ганза жёлтая, смешиваясь, не дают выраженный зелёный оттенок. Можно так добавить немного сиены жженной, тогда не будет зелёного. Экспериментируйте со своими красками, узнаете, какие смеси не дают зелени :)

Thanks! It's a great technique, keeps the paper wet for a really long time :) The only downside is that the pigment tends to dry at least two times lighter, so you have to use double the concentration 😄

To work with a credit card, coarse-grain Fabriano paper is best.

It's more or less same as watercolour, but more opaque..and more expensive sadly. I think I used watercolour and poster paints in the early years, but before the vintage Christmas theme, I was painting from old American comic book covers to poster size. Ive been painting landscapes for several years and decided i wanted to learn some new techniques for skies. I was able to paint along with good results thanks to your detailed instruction. This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. In the earlier part of the video when youre working on the upper right hand part surrounding the light, are you doing any lifting out (i mean when you were putting the sienna, cobalt and indigo in, after the paper towel)? I have a nice set of brushes like yours (chinese goat hair and mongoose if anyone is wondering what it is) but they make me nervous because of how much water they hold and their lack of stiffness when i need it, but i see some effects in your painting i had to work much harder to achieve and i wonder how much of that is in the brush shape. If youve compared, do your brushes make more organic marks than european style round brushes, or is that more a matter of experience? Im sorry my comment is super long😢 wish i could sit with you in person. I just found your channel and had to subscribe.

Thanks! To answer your first question, I probably did some lifting at the end. Mostly, I was just applying the pain though in the direction of the sunlight, so that it looks like sun rays.

To answer, your second question, yes, chinese brushes can hold a lot for water, so you have to control their moisture. I usually don't have a lot of water on them. I keep them damp but rarely dripping with water. That's because I usually pre-wet the paper. So the paper already holds a lot of water, and with my brush I just add the paint.

I used two brushes from Blue Heron Arts, they are calligraphy brushes. I think some small brushes too.

I think I also used a flat brush by Michael Solovyev. But I would say a brush is not as important as the time you spend with it 🙇🏻‍♀️ Every brush has some unique properties that you can learn to work with and use to your advantage.

Yes, it definitely helps to wet the paper on both sides. It also stays flat this way, which I find a bit more enjoyable to work on than when the paper crinkles. Glad it was useful!

Wow, your clouds look more beautiful than the photo! I want to know if the paint gets lighter because it dries? At 3:14, the clouds color is lighter after that point. Do you do anything else except for letting the sky dry to get the lighter effect? Thank you.

I used a calligraphy brush; it is quite big in size. It does behave like a flat brush sometimes, if you don't shape it into a sharp tip with fingers. So yes, probably the hairs were naturally separated. Calligraphy brushes are quite interesting to use.
