A commercial sized gutter on that barn should handle the amount of water you have coming off that roof and would divert the water to the end of the barn away from the barnyard

Piping that water off the roof and away from the barnyard is the only solution that is going to give you immediate results at the lowest cost. Your going to need a 6 inch gutter for sure. Don't know if one drop will handle it. Can you direct the flow toward the lake? Over time, You can take a scoop of muck (appears to be less than 12" to clean soil) and add it to your compost pile. It's loaded with nutrients and your compost will dry it up so you can spread it this spring. Do you have any shale on the farm where you can dig a spoil pit? Take a scoop of muck and replace with a scoop of shale. Slow and steady wins the race. 😊

@stevejohnstonbaugh9171 8 ай бұрын
Maybe all that work you did trying to clear the barn underfloor drain actually worked better than you expected! 😊 I clearly remember that ponding. I'm shocked to see it's dry. That water is going somewhere. Maybe it is leaking all the time into the barnyard too? I think where the underfloor drain was left, you were going to hook up your new backhoe and dig an exploratory trench right across the face of the slab focusing on the area where you think the drain runs. If you get a good freeze up, that would be a worthwhile job - especially if you can find some shale to backfill the trench and haul the muck to your compost pile.

For what its worth, i keep a couple old non functioning refrigerators in barn to store: seed, shop manuals, battery/antifreeze testers, etc. in. As long as gaskets are good, seed will last 2 or 3 years.

Like everyone else in the comment section has said, gutters in the barn would take care of the issue, everywhere you are on a hill already so once that constant water is gone, it will dry up rather fast.

We've been feeding hay on pasture. Unrolling round bales on pasture or spreading square bale flakes. It takes pressure off the barn yard, reduces the number of barn clean outs, and the hay "waste" feeds the soil directly in the spring making better grass.

Remember that fiasco. Then that adds to your snowfall problem of them getting overwhelmed with weight of snow and possibly ice come melting time.

Got to apologise about the comment about the Mud behind the barn. Thought all the water was coming from the drains in the barn. Took a better look when you said something about the rain from the roof. Yup you definetly need to do something with that water. Gonna do the trenching from the creek to the barn first and then the gutters I hope. You can get a lot of good soil out of the yard and put in some clay and pack it back there with some of that soil just enough to help the grass grow. It's looking good around there and we enjoy watching how the animals react to your gates being opened for moving all around and then coming back in.Stay safe around there and keep up the great videos. trick on the twine pull off-- cut as LOW on one side as possible go to other side and pull loose across THEN pull out from underneath if you have to you can roll up a wad and then pull each individual string out with a nice hand grip of the wad . i forget is there concrete under ALL the lean to of the barn or just a foundation?? now that you have a backhoe it should be a lot easier to dig and fix a drain for the barn . AH porch side delivery of wood, maybe make a tote carrier that you can just set it off like the shop wood storage. we like to get our seed from BAKER SEEDs started by a teenager in his bedroom !!! he has now purchased a couple of heirloom seed companies ( comstock and ferre & co) And started a " village " where you can come see old time ag located in Missouri helping preserve the OLD stocks of seeds!! have fun and have a good week from Oklahoma

1:05 Gutters to carry the water away from the entire width of the barn and discharge into a tile under the ground to the further lot downhill and then discharge to the surface would probably help out that horrific mud problem. I have done this for my house and put tile under my driveway which was higher than the yard was a huge improvement to keep my yard from flooding because it couldn't get away being trapped by higher elevation with house, driveway, deck. I think if you take the time to do this, you will take care of your water issue as well. Not to mention getting water away from the barn foundation might help. Just an idea. Good luck. 7:02 you were just talking about doing what I had just suggested. Great minds. As far as the other drainage issues, you can put in tile with holes in it to allow water to collect around the entire barn and then drain it away like you were talking. The water will take the path of least resistance, so it will flow into the perforated pipe and flow away. You won't have to bust out cement to place the french drain. Putting the perforated pipe around the barn will do the same thing...unless the water is coming from inside of the barn through water leaks or roof leaks. Definitely put gutters on though and see if this stops your water issue first before doing the perforated pipe around the entire barn. This will probably take care of 90% of your water issues. Gutters on both sides, then have the water flow away from the building. Less likely to have water coming onto the slab where the animals are staying if it's moved away instead of coming off the roof and saturating the ground on both sides of the barn. Again, good luck.

with all the money you have spent on various upgrades to your property, I think for a pretty low price, you could put in oversized rain gutters and downspouts to catch all the rain and snow from the barn rooves, then a quickly buried pipe to carry all the water out of the barnyard and further down the hill. You might even think of how you could capture all the water to feed the livestock. I enjoy every one of your and Becca's vids .
