3 kids by 3 fathers? Self harming, watching 2 younger siblings, on meds for ADHD? Sounds like that little girl had too much on her 12 year old shoulders. Hope the child gets the mental help she clearly needs. I hope she also has a good attorney who advocates for her. She needs someone on her side alone.

I came home and hugged my 16 year old daughter after this. She struggled with depression when she was 13-14. My wife and I found evidence of her self cutting and letters reflecting the emotional pain she was in. It felt like someone had reached inside my chest and punched me in the heart. Thankfully, good mental health care and her growing through puberty she has transformed into a healthy and happy teen, with a job and boyfriend. This video is devastating to watch

ngl i kinda teared up reading this. I'm so happy for your daughter and i can't stress enough how much i appreciate loving parents such as you. It's nice knowing that there are still caring parents that are willing to take the time to show that they're loved and safe. Can't say the same about my own, all they do is take care of the basic minimum but the love and emotional care has and won't ever be there. I've struggled with depressive moods for the longest time and haven't been feeling all that great lately, just entering college and all, so seeing this brightened my day a little. Best of wishes for your daughter and family ❤

The reason I know this is I have 6 & 8 yo grandchildren and my son said when the oldest turns 10 he will be watching his sister after school. Hopefully by that time he realizes 10 is too young to be home alone let alone babysit his sister. I don’t know where my son got this idea because I never left him home alone until he was 15 and he never watched his younger siblings they were in daycare.

This is painful to watch. The policeman was so gentle. His saying "cross cross applesauce" shows his awareness of a 12yr old mind. Edit: I'm always suprised at the responses- sometimes delighted with the cleverness, some make me want to slit my wrists. I'm probably older than all/most of you. When I was a kid they simply said: Sit down cross legged. Our teachers expected us to have intelligence. There was no pandering to the lowest denominator. The losing both my kids part points to deeper issues. I think she knew the child was struggling with mental issues and kept forcing her to babysit a baby. I think she gave up the moment she found out about the incident she was possibly partly responsible for. Especially when she said they don't get along that great. Then why force her to watch him? Again, CPS needs to be on her and do a thorough investigation. The daughter is not innocent, but I also think she is a victim of child abuse and neglect from the mother.

that's sorta how they did me the morning my dad died. I was certain he had died after 17minutes of doing CPR. I knew deep down that that was way too long to do CPR and the person not have any effects. However shortly after getting to the hospital some doctor met with me and said he was stable and things were looking good. They were organizing a transfer to a larger hospital. So I'm like, damn I guess he's going to pull through it afterall. So after being told he was 'in good condition', I return home to go to work. (living paycheck to paycheck then). probably 40 minutes later, I hadn't even left for work yet, my brother calls me from the other hospital to tell me they have him in ICU, he's braindead and they're wanting to pull him off life support. I drove across town and met with the ICU "nurse" who was, unquestionably, the most disinterested, compassionless human I've ever encountered. Like I still find myself, years later, replaying our discussion and wondering how this person chose healthcare. Like you gotta, at some point, care about others to go into healthcare. This woman just simply didn't. It was a paycheck. Just a callous person. I'd have just rather been told things didn't look good, off the bat.

My brother and I had a horrible sibling rivalry. One day when we were in our teens, it just exploded. We were both in the kitchen and almost simultaneously opened the kitchen drawer and pulled out two big knives. I don’t know what would have happened, but our mother walked in, hearing the commotion, saw us holding the knives, let out a shriek and we both stopped, dropped the knives and realized how out of control we had gotten. We never fought like that again, but if our mother hadn’t walked in, we might have very well been in this girl’s shoes. Just to give an idea of our home life, there was no violence. My parents wouldn’t even let us watch “The Three Stooges”, since they were worried we’d emulate them and hurt each other. These things can just explode in an instant, no matter how good anyone is raised.

My 12 year old brother had come home from his very first karate class and decided to teach me, his 11 year old sister a side kick he had just learned. Welp, I aced that kick...only right into his crotch, on accident! He flipped out, grabbed me, kicking and screaming to the bedroom window (2nd floor), and was shoving me out the window when my mom arrived, jumped on his back, and desperately tried to prevent him from finishing the shove. He was in an absolute blind rage and I was frozen in fear. Fortunately, when he flung my mom off his back (yep, he did that to mom), she landed closer to me, grabbed my wrist and between us clawed me back inside from where I was partially dangling out the window. He snapped out of his rage and when realized what he'd done, joined mom and me in the hug while we cried. That turned out to be his first and last karate class, along with strict instructions to let my dad (in the military) teach me some defensive fight moves. Late 60's now and still can recall those moments, even though it wasn't near the last fight as he had a tendency to use fists on us 3 younger siblings on the regular.

One of the best parent books out there is “The Teenage Brain” it gives a scientific perspective on brain development and reasons kids do what they do. This case is sad but as a 12 year old, depending on life experiences, trauma and such, no child would be able to comprehend the severe consequences of the situation until it’s talked about afterwards, if not taught coping skills early. I am not saying in any way shape or form it’s the parents fault, as even parents are brought up differently and what kids are exposed to these days is COMPLETELY different to today’s children. My heart breaks for all involved in any situation like this one.

@annatanneberger1
@annatanneberger1 Жыл бұрын
@@caseybrown4360 My father died in 1979 and my mother died ten years before that in 1969. I had the good sense to nevertheless work hard to build a career and save so that I could retire without going hungry. So I have had decades to come to terms with what happened in my life. Here are some insights: 1) The true meaning of forgiveness is to refrain from taking revenge. (I never took revenge on anyone; was just too glad to get away from bad people and recover and get on with my life). I was able to take insights from it, so that I could know to treat other people better. 2) Avoid pseudo-Christians and pseudo-psychologists who admonish you to excise a substantial part of your life as if it never happened and gaslight you into believing that forgetting part of your life is healthy. 3) These admonitions to "forgive" (forget about it and never mention it) are usually quite aggressive, so it probably has something to do with themselves, things they hope others would forget about them. So that is how I can "even come up with how the officer was raised." I now know that humans are capable of kindness and goodness and gentleness, despite how they were raised. Not everybody. But I speculated that this officer had that capacity, regardless of how he was raised, and that there is a statistical likelihood that he was raised to be tough (which is an essential part of the father's contribution to childrearing), but that nevertheless he could find kindness and compassion for that distraught girl.

This is the first time hearing of this tragedy. But how stable could she really be, being only 12, on & off meds with a history of cutting? And who knows what else she was dealing with. I took her repeating "I don't know what happened" as I don't know why I did it. Or even not realizing she was stabbing him until after that last stab. @@D.Whitman-hd5csWe tried getting her help when she was younger. It didn’t really help. No one wants to label a child as dangerous. Professionals sugar coat serious mental illnesses in children too often because they are afraid they will ruin the child’s life. I spent years afraid to have knives in the house and not leaving her alone with her siblings. She finally took up with some boy who seemed able to handle her and help her control herself. It was a huge relief when they moved far away. I know at one point he placed her in a mental health facility. I hope that helped her.

She stabbed a 9 year old, her own brother, 3 times in the chest until he died. 11 and 12 year olds can be super conniving, I was able to sneak my mom’s stick shift out at night when I was 11 and I knew if a cop caught me I’d be dead and I knew I could kill someone but at the time I trusted myself to drive the vehicle anyway. At least an adult from a rough background, doesn’t have an excuse, but it can be understood how and why this would happen. What is this 12 year old girl from a good family’s excuse for this besides, she’s evil? She only thought of herself and what will happen to her the whole time (sociopath) and I’m not convinced she didn’t cut herself recently leading up to this event as part of an act. 12 year olds are capable of such a thing, they are. And while you and everyone is always advocating compassion for the worst criminals, not even one “RIP” for her brother in any of these comments….

This is horrible for that child. When I was 11 my parents were drunks and they stayed in the bars. I babysat and cooked, cleaned, washed and did everything that a parent would do for my younger brothers and sisters. I even got up in the morning before school and made breakfast for me and my siblings and got two of them ready for school. It was my responsibility to cook for my siblings and that included breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dad went to work ( self employed) and mom stayed sober enough to watch my two youngest siblings until I came home from school. Around 3 or 4 dad would come home from work and then he and mom hit the bars until closing time...2:00am My siblings were 7, 6, 2 and 1 at the time. So yes a 12 year old could watch a 2 and 9 year old sibling. But should they? That's really the question isn't it. I tried to commit suicide and when I was 14 I ran away from home. Obviously I didn't succeed but the way I felt was the reason I left home the day after I graduated and never looked back. I kept in touch with my sisters and brothers and we now get along fine. At least those of us who are still alive.

Whilst children may not be ‘selfish’ per se (kids show altruistic behaviours from the toddler years), they are inherently self-centred due to their undeveloped brains. That’s not to say they don’t love or care for people, nor do they lack the capabilities and desire to do nice things, they just have less empathy than an adult would have. They also have far less self control. Having said that, studies show that these things develop anywhere between the ages of 6-13, so this child would be on the higher end of that, therefore should have some development in these areas (obviously not accounting for disabilities and so on). Teens are, however, less able to fully understand the consequences of their actions and *generally* engage in riskier behaviours and are more reactive in their decision making. This is why often teens do things adults wouldn’t dream of doing and seem to not think things through.

I know it's about the victim, but I'm also thinking a whole lot about the officer here. This is so incredibly traumatic and heavy. This is a part of the job. Seeing people at the worst of their day. For one it might be not stopping at a stop-sign. For another it might be the absolute worst day of their life - their home was robbed or - something incomprehensible like this. And he's there, has to ask the questions. It doesn't just stay with the victim and family. It stays with the officer. The job these guys have... there wasn't just an adult being a terrible person. it's a 12 year old stabbing her brother. You never forget it.

Bruce: Your compassion for your kids is not universal. No. When my mother died (I was 14), all the adults rallied around my dad and admonished me to "be strong for you dad; he needs you now." And of course I failed as a substitute housekeeper. I was not allowed to cry or show my feelings, which had no name, like falling off a cliff in a nightmare.

It's so important to remember kids are kids and even if you think they can handle something or they think they can, if a problem arises they have very little problem solving skills. I raised my daughter alone and I still go over and over the things I wish I had been more tender about and talk to her about over and over and over. It's a hard world and they are still children. It warms my heart when I hear you talk about your children they way you do. You are an excellent teacher to remind us all how lucky we are to have children.

The mother has said that it appears to be a manic episode caused by stopping her ADHD medication. She didn't say which medication, but the child had begun cutting herself some time before and making unusual comments to kids at school. This is a very extreme reaction, but her response seems very natural. She seems to be describing a sort of dissociative break, but that alone makes me ask what else is going on.

@@1232lyft there was never any questions that the parents were to blame to some degree, but it's also not that simple. My point is that things simply don't add up, and that child doesn't appear to be malingering or lying.

But it’s kinda of insane how much excuses are being for this girl, i didn’t have a perfect childhood either and I have seen quite a bit of violence and dysfunctional household with other younger siblings, but I would never even at 12 despite my environment stab my younger sibling to death what the hell

I, too, cannot imagine the pain of the mother to have to go through that. And how sad the daughter found herself in a state of mind that she had to start cutting. We have to accept the fact that people do snap. Bruce, you had an incredible amount of compassion with this. I had the same visceral reaction toward her action, but the more I watched the more I understood. I can’t imagine living with something like that-on either end. I especially sympathize with the mother and the amount of guilt she must be feeling. I would feel like an utter failure and then some. The brain is a dark wonder sometimes. 😞 I was trying hard not to cry. This was hard to see. But with a good lesson in compassion, something I’m still learning myself. Thank you.

I just saw on the internet (so you know it’s 100% accurate) that the girl had just been put back on adhd meds and the mom said the girl was cutting herself, which was why she was abruptly taken off the meds. I absolutely believe that her brain got messed up by medication. Not saying it was the sole cause, but it does explain a lot. Too much adderall can make you act like you are on meth.

@@sarahjean3670 she also was the secondary caregiver to her 9 y/o and 3 y/o brothers, having sole responsibility for them while her mom was at work. And she’s barely 12, she was in the 6th grade. The mom said herself sometimes they don’t get along, nothing major but they don’t always get along. I have a hard time believing this is a new arrangement. Imagine being 11 years old and caring for a 2 y/o and an 8 y/o. Or 10 years old caring for a 7 y/o and an infant. Imagine being 9 years old and having your 12 year old sister discipline you and be in charge and lay down the law and having a stand in parent relationship with you and you don’t think that’s fair bc in your mind she’s a kid too and pretty much your age. You’d probably lash out, not listen to her, challenge her authority, give her a hard time. Bc that’s natural and developmentally appropriate. But then imagine being that 12 y/o who didn’t ask to be put in that position of authority yet you have to keep control of the house while keeping constant eyes on a toddler. Your brother won’t listen to you and is giving you a hard time constantly and you’re barely functioning, you’re depressed have ADHD and are self-harming. And through all that you still need to care for a toddler. And your mom comes home and blames you if your brother didn’t listen you to, if any household chores didn’t get done. And with ADHD med withdrawals plus severe depression, it would actually be quite normal to have some psychosis in that circumstance. That’s not even considering if this was the onset of undiagnosed schizophrenia. And she is a child. Wouldn’t a lot of people “snap” under those circumstances? These ppl making comments, “oh someone stabbed their brother, death by firing squad!” Are just reactionary, they have no ability or desire to critically think about what would drive a 12 year old child to stab her brother. “They know it’s wrong at that age” so what, then, would cause her to do that? There’s none of that. I don’t understand what they have brains for if they’re not gonna use them.

@@sarahjean3670 and I feel bad for the mom, she probably was put in a position where she was a single mom to 3 kids and never expected to be, trying to hold down a full time job or maybe two jobs, and barely providing for your kids, there’s no way you can afford daycare or a babysitter for them every single day. It’s very normal in the US for your oldest child to be your unpaid babysitter for your other children. It may have been how she was raised too, it probably didn’t cross her mind that this arrangement could do a lot of harm. She absolutely never could have predicted this outcome. But… I think she knew. She took on this super defensive tone when ranting to the officer, clearly upset, but it was almost the tone of a toddler or teenager making excuses… it just struck me as a very odd tone and I think she was thinking “oh shit maybe this dynamic between them of not getting along was what did it and maybe her having to take on a parental role fed into this violent attack.” And insisting she be at the house… like I totally get distrust of police. I wouldn’t trust one as far as I could throw one. But your son is in the ICU at the hospital and you wanna go to the house? I wonder what she was hoping they wouldn’t find. Could be yeah a little weed but I just wonder….

@Abbigail Carr You can't get diagnosed with schizophrenia until the age of twenty five because that is when the brain is fully developed, most symptoms of it don't start showing until 20 I believe. But you ate whole heartedly correct, the med changes its self can cause problems. Even for adults it can cause problems, it blows my mind how these things can happen but I do believe you are correct. Even if an adult was in her situation caring for a toddler and an infant and having adhd it brings others with it like depression and anxiety, and all those combined into one with stress and med changes it doesn't surprised me she snapped, especially if she didn't get along with the "support system" she had....alot of people don't understand mental illness and it breaks my heart that people fall through the cracks like that....thank you for having compassion and empathy some of these comments break my heart.... I just want to ask them when YOU where that young did you know what death was? Did you understand the decisions that you made? Like...the only reason I knew what death was that young is because I had already buried my grandpa and an uncle. Like...kids don't have logic like adults do.

Thoughtful POV: She's undoubtedly been given the "we talk out our problems; use your words, not your hands" lesson/rule before; she's old enough to be obedient to her parents and follow rules whether she understands the reasoning or the consequences or not; children younger than her have gone through worse stresses than math class or babysitting and not killed their sibling for it; I have Asperger's (same as Sandy Hook shooter) and was bullied, and despite anger and frustration, have myself yet to stab, nor has anyone I know. All in history children had roles in the household equivalent to adult jobs; standard chores, babysitting younger siblings, working fields and tending to livestock...Dangerous and strenuous and tedious work from single-digits ages to senior citizen with kids of their own across the centuries. She is in some way inherently broken and is a danger as a living person, like a loaded firearm without a safety just waiting to go off at the slightest brush with a trigger. Meds and therapy, sure, but not before punishment for murder. Zero Sympathy. Bruce himself in a video I recently watched made a "I've been through X and haven't done Y, so no excuse" statement...Well, we've all been 12. Who here has committed fratricide before, raise your hand!

So glad you made it clear that a 12 year old is going to think about her friends first. It doesn't make her callous because she doesn't ask after her brother . When my brother and I were 5 ( me ) and 3 were ""swordfighting" with my mums metal knitting needles . I accidentally poked him in the eye and he had to go to hospital. Both my parents went and i think my gran watched me 55 years on and I still remember that feeling of primarily being upset cos mum shouted at me( obvs) and thinking they wouldn't live me anymore. I never once thought he could die or lose an eye...he didn't. But I was the elder so I should have known better.
