Using Hot Cues to Pre Plan DJ Sets

I just graduated from the Club Ready DJ school, and MAN, I am light years ahead of where I thought I would be since the summer when I first found your videos and decided to buy the course. Recently, I just booked a big live stream gig (the biggest one yet) where I'll be DJing alongside Twitch DJs who all have thousands of followers and are amazing DJs. It's astonishing when I think about it. Anyways, I had no idea that buying your course would get me this far in just a few months, and even more, you're not kidding, the CRT community is filled with amazing people who I've become close with over the months. One of the main reasons why I purchased the course, aside from the awesome content, was because of some of the heartful comments people left about their own successes and experiences with your course...so here I am paying it forward. This is my method for all tracks I plan to possibly Play in a set. It’s so helpful especially if you don’t know the song well and find yourself wanting to recap a certain part to regain an energy or give yourself more time to mix your next track if you weren’t quite ready.

Been you cue points for a long time now to mark where to start or end ..but never thought of just pressing the cue pad A Or C like you explain..everyday is a school day..great video

This is how i mix 😁 and taught myself.. Wait for a hotque point and hit the new tracks hot que and blend them out... Took me time to find the correct que timing but so easy and stress free.. Its like a pre set mix 😉😎

Same for me. New to DJing (couple of months) and I taught myself this. No need to mix in and beatmatch first. Although, I do still try to beatmatch now

I am living out of this method. It takes time to hot-cue every song in my library but its totally worth it for "future sake". Specially the Tech House genre, easy to groove around!

That's why I like mixed in key, it automatically places 8 hot cues on interesting parts, it's not prefect, but great to save time

How do you get those exact cue points from mixed in key to sync into Rekordbox?

@@Wadepenn_ you have to export whole collection from RB in xlm format, then you use mixed in key to export cue points to that file, then you import it again into rekordbox. I think there is a tutorial on MIK youtube

Ohhh you cheeky sausage - you were certainly having fun.😂. Love the idea. The world of hot cues can certainly open up a matrix of possibilities with the mixing experience for the Dj and the audience. Personally I put mine 8 or 16 bars before drops, breakdown and outro - but this is great!!!

Hi Andrew! Almost year a go thanks to Your Psytrance mix I started my jurney with DJing. It is so cool to see video when You present method that I found by my self to make sets. I made solid pattern with hot cues. A is for inrto, B for first clean beats, C for first chorus, D for main drop, E for brake down, F for some vocal, or short separeted sound easy to implement, G for build up and H for outro. It alows me to jump around track and mixing em easly without much of preparation- just some EQ. I like to put brake downs on drops, or just first clean beat on breakdown to keep the beat for whole set. Your content is super valuable, thanks to Your videos I was able to play on few partys already useing FLX4. I recorded few wicked mixes of Witcher 3 soundtrack with melodic techno, and psytrance. Two very different worlds combined in one track. To make them I used method You have shown in this vid. PS. On DDJ 800, You dont need to click memory useing mouse. You can set cue and then shift+loop extention (one bar leinght) to set memory cue. Cheers Mate! I am Your huge fun! Tomasz Pająk

Exactly!!! Right after analysis of a new song I place all 8 hot cues almost the same way as you described, so I always know what is where and I have the fast way how to get there. Together with memory cues one or two phrases in advance of the hot cues it is easy to have a good map of the song and it is easy to combine them without mistakes very fast way. Another big advantage of such placing the cues is that it is hard to remember all special and interesting places in so many songs in the library. But with this logic, you are always quite well oriented what is where in the songs. But I do understand Andrew's excitement, because DJs had not such possibilities before - no hotcues on vinyls, on old CDJs 4 hot cues maximum was crazy revolution... There was no chance to use this method! So DJs could not invent such method. And for new DJs it is on the other side the best and the most easy way how to learn to mix, because we have so many cues (hot + memory) at our disposal. And not just as a blind points in songs, but they can be loops and they can be also described!!!!!!! That is crazy sci-fi for old school DJs!

You can use the shift button and the memory cue forward/backward buttons and active loop button to quickly create the memory cues. You don't have to switch in rekordbox UI to the memory cue grid menu to save a memory cue. It is much faster to do this way.

H! What a great video I found it tremendously insightful! I didn't quite catch why you also placed memory cues on top of the hot cues you previously set, is there a big difference? Did you set them to differentiate between set points in the track (e.g. drop, intro, breakdown, etc.) with hot cues and the same points but 16 bars before each time for the same points with memory cues? These videos are getting good. Take a bog standard feature and over explain it to a crowd that finds value in this. It’s astonishing. I’ve got a great idea for a video, go over how you can use the cue button to rhythmically get a track ready… and as a complex addition, you can listen through headphones rather than just look at wave forms. Using your ears in this way can be considered challenging to those that don’t know how to nudge a platter, or even bother touching a pitch fader, so I would recommend you take a good long time explaining these techniques to your audience

I need serato to steal DJAYS beatgrids and someone to build a cue point generator that actually works. I’ve ran 60,000 tracks through mixed in key, terrible result. I ran the same 60,000 through lexicon cue point generator. Even worse. Cmon Dj complainies. It’s 2024. And I don’t want to hear mutants comment “imagine if this guy Dj’d on vinyl”. Well I did. I started in 1995. If anyone earned the right to benefit from technology it’s people in my shoes.

As vinyl only dj for more than 30 years i just watch the grooves ,beatmatch by ear and make a smooth transition by blending in one vinyl into another and all that without any sync or computer technology it's called skills 😂

And you still did preparation before playing set. Music crates, choose which songs to take to the gig. Now we have different kind of preparation to do to sound professional. Standards are different nowadays. Transitions that sounded good 20-30 years ago won’t sound as good as these made today with good prep. Also, beatmatching is quite an easy skill to learn and I agree it’s worth learning.

@@Koxv2 i still respect dj's who mix live even with digital but if you wanna be honnest as we all know most dj's nowaday have prerecorded sets and all thry do is pretending to turn knobs my heart will always go out to vinyl and transitions with vinyl can be as good as digital ones if you know your game, imo any vinyl dj can play a digital set but not every digital dj can play a vinyl set and that's a fact ,but like i said i respect any digital dj who plays an actual live set insted of prerecorded sets where they pretend to mix live 😉

@@dubthabreak Almost no digital DJs can play vinyls!!! That is insanely hard and most of the digital DJs would never started to DJ, because were not patient and disciplined enought. Only the proper DJs who want to understand the real art of mixing are practising on old CDJs and vinyls. And on the other hand, it is great, that modern digital equipment gives more possibilities to the DJs, so the creativity can create transitions and combinations that were not possible and old school DJs could only dream about.
