@@kimchi_b I learnt on the old Denon DN 2000F dual CD controller in '94...I love the evolution of the gear and having done video editing, I found the Serato DJ Pro software quite easy to get my head around. I bought a little 2 channel Denon MC4000 controller to see if the passion was still there before splashing out on a bigger unit. I did buy a 4 channel controller so as to learn how to play on 4 decks but actually prefer the smaller unit. I was super nervous until my friend said to me "Have fun and trust your music" I then proceeded to (as they say) smash it!

I’m over 60 and rediscovered clubbing five years ago. There are venues in many cities that are judgement free zones where people are united by music. Look up Daybreaker to see if they are in a city near you. Daybreaker does 6AM substance free raves where everyone is welcome. As for being a DJ, “older” DJs know the old school grooves. That music never gets old and you can bring experience that younger DJs don’t have.

I'm 61, recently retired. I was a radio and club DJ, late 70s-90s, all vinyl. Purchased a quality controller and QSC speakers, and began the digital transition. Learning digital has been a steep, yearlong process. But, everything I know from mixing vinyl translates to digital. Digital is SO MUCH EASIER. Quality online courses are priceless. Recently hired for a big-budget charity event. Regular DJ wasn't available. Several thousand people, outdoor concert PA, two bands, open format (70s-current dance, classic rock and country.) Learned later organizers were very concerned about my age. I Googled current charts for music. Used old-school beat mixing (learned on vinyl) w/limited effects. Pleasantly surprised by rave reviews. My only limitations are physical.

44 year old full time venue DJ here. Tip #1 stay healthy and hang around young people and you'll stay young. My colleagues are genuinely shocked when they learn my age 😍 Tip 2: Use your maturity to your benefit and target venues that book entertainment via venue managers and not promoters. Believe it or not most venue managers hate the drama that dealing with stereotypical DJs brings (hence promoters). But if you find venues that book directly and if you are professional, business like and don't need to be constantly "managed" you are saving them time and effort and you will be appreciated for it 🙏

I am 35 and started to DJ last year just for fun and I got hooked to it. 🙈 It's really fun. So I decided to learn properly. I took your course and I can say with my experience it helped me a lot to learn. Really well organized and amazing way to explain things. You are really great teacher. I never thought I would play out of my bedroom. Still playing in bedroom but doing zoom events for 100-200 people almost every weekend now. Now the situation is I need to say no to organizers sometimes because of different commitments. Some organizers already asked me to do shows for them when events will be allowed post covid. Can't wait for the day to have real feel. Thanks a lot mate for all your efforts to make learning interesting. 👍

The sharing of our mixes on mixcloud/soundcloud/twitch and YT brings us all closer together with such positive feedback from everyone it just makes me want to jump on the decks straight away again to do another mix! I've also been playing at regular house parties since doing the course and have been booked for upcoming parties with awesome feedback from everyone who attended. This weekend I'm playing at a mates 60th with about 5 other djs so yup what Andrew said, no age barrier and just have a positive confident mindset!

Age is in the mind, knees and hips. Joking aside, no you're not too old. I started learning 18 months ago, at the age of 50. I wanted to learn but never really knew how, where or what gear I needed. Plus you know, life, work, family. I do it as a hobby, I really don't want to earn a living from it, but that's me. You might want to make money from it, you might want to play gigs, you probably want to see people dance and enjoy themselves. Then do it, the only person stopping you is you. Who cares about age and youth? Only the inexperienced care.

House parties are the way to go. It builds up a lot of confidence and your friends are much more forgiving than any other crowd. Just start small and get some second hand equipement, search for some lighting with automatic effects so you don't have to worry about that while playing and then just build from there. I've been giving house parties for my birthday for some years now and it is just so much fun! Everyone keeps talking about them afterwards, remembering how much fun they had. It's such a good feeling.

Its not your age that matters. What's important is your drive to play out live at 5am, or on a Sunday at noon closing out a 3 day camping party. Because we cant all get the 2am slot prime time that gives you mad energy to play because everyones there to watch your set and you typically get paid. Opening at 9 or 10 is easy but not everyone's favorite because nobody is there to hear their set. So its not a perfect world in the real Dj's life. You have to go with the flow and learn to bend not break! I used to get paid to play a local slot at one of the popular clubs but they don't all pay anymore so that's tuff too. You really do have to love the music and the people to always play for free, while still buying new music and spending thousands on new dj gear! It doesn't seem fair to not get paid but you do what you gotta do to play out live these days. Being a bedroom Dj is kind of a energy killer (unless you just started and are really feeling it) and it makes people wanna quit Djing and sell their gear. I find having a beer is nice while Djing at home it really loosens you up a bit.

I'm doing small festivals, bars & private parties playing regularly, really enjoying it and getting invited back on a regular basis. I started DJing at 50+ (yeah ok, with 15 years of gigging with live bands as a musician - but I'd never DJed before). But then Covid, so am only just rebuilding my DJing now... and I'll be 57 in a couple of months. So I totally agree... if you have a passion to DJ, if you feel your pulse race wherever you think about it, get a controller, get practicing, network, make it happen and don't look back!!!

Nice One Andrew! I'm now 52 & have played Clubs, Festivals, Illegal's Etc in my 20's & 30's, but i am still playing now (admittedly more just at home for myself now) but that's only because i don't really want to get into it like b4. I certainly wouldn't let my age stop me, i just enjoy playing at home now, or maybe the odd mates party etc, but i do what i want, when i want now! ANYBODY out there DON'T let your age define you. As the old saying goes "Age is but a number" Mind you my body would disagree sometimes. Thanks for the amazing content - As always Andrew, Love what you do mate..... ;)

Thx , Andrew for the advice. Started DJing last July, when I was 41 y/o. Having learnt this and soonafter, my friends immediately decided that I should DJ their wedding. I had 11 months to prepare and they booked a club for about 40 guests (ended up being 15 in the end). We all love Trance and they told me I was playing from midnight to 6am on CDJs. At that time, I was still on my DDJ 400 controller. First gig and a 6-hour set.... no pressure. :D That was nearly 3 weeks ago. 1st time on CDJs and believe me, plenty went wrong to start. For starters, the wire on my headphones decided to go mono and sound was distorted, so had a hard time cueing and beatmatching next songs properly. As a result, I had to mix by ear, which would've been fine if I hadn't forgotten to turn my booth monitor louder until about an hour in. Lol In all honestly, harmonic mixing saved me (a must for Trance), as my mixing was subpar until about 90 minutes in. Starting then, I decided to mix for myself for a bit to get loose and increased the energy I was providing and had more interaction w/ the crowd. It was infectious and the crowd noticed and was more responsive from then on. Yes, it was a small crowd (most not knowing anything about Trance), but it was accelerating having them in the palm of my hand. My music selection and crowd control are the things I am most proud of. I took them from 130 to 138 bpms, starting w/ Progressive and ended w/ Psy. In all, I would give myself a C minus as a grade, but crowd didn't notice my errors too much and some commended me for introducing them to Trance. It was a valuable experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Lastly, to all you old heads, don't limit yourself and keep learning, even through errors. My confidence is better off for it. Hope this helps. :)

While it is fresh in my mind I want to mention.. Think about the advantages you can have as an older DJ. Keep in mind two things. First.. there is a whole different generation out there in the crowd you are playing for and they have no idea what kind of music you have heard in your generation. Second.. EDM holds its value better most than any other genre of music there is. 20+ year old tracks that sounds amazing even today - that crowd you are playing for hasn't ever heard before thus you can use those tracks and and blow their minds at the right time. As an example; if you remember the first time you heard Sasha - Xpander. Recall the directions it took your mind and how it may have inspired you. Yes you can listen to it now and it may not have the same effect as the first time but for the new generation - its a weapon of choice.

I spent years listening to Sasha, Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk (but lost interest after his Politics of Dancing Compilation), Dave Seaman etc. Back in the early 2000's. Bought every GU CD that came out religiously. I loved anything that as not mainstream. The music has changed a lot since then but there is an originality and purity these days that is hard to find that existed back then. So many prog house tracks these days sound so similar. This makes it difficult to find tracks that sound more original. To this day I still can't find a track that tops or becomes equal to Xpander.

@@ZacharySound I’ve heard of all these names before but didn’t really dive deep into their stuff. I will check them out! Have you checked out Bandcamp? It’s a website where all these small time producers and artists peddle their music. I would argue that there is more creativity out there today. Unlike even 20 years ago, anyone with an internet connection and a laptop today can make and publish songs for purchase. Have you heard Opus by Eric Prydz? The 9 minute edit gave me chills the first time. I’m actually more partial to genre called future funk. I don’t know if it will be your or anyone’s) cup of tea, but it gets me going!

I'm 31 and started few weeks ago. Your videos were very helpful and I actually had that thought too, that I'm too old. I was like f*** it, I want to connect more with drum and bass. I listen to it for 16 years and was always interested in mixing and djing. So I did it now. And you were a big multiplicatior in that. Keep it up man!

Thank you I am not the only one who is over 40 and still have the passion to be a dj yes I fully agree with you there is not about the age is what you bring to the table and if people like what you do go ahead in general music is a passion not a hobby for me I am still learning since I was in my early 20's and still learning new things about how to be a dj so live your life the way that makes you happy

I'm 48 and have been buying music since I was 16 and Djing for about 15 years, but the older I get the more Self-conscious I am about my age. I would love to delve deeper into your knowledge around "believing is seeing" as I have suffered from belief and the whole concept around this elusive mindset. I do recognize that "doing" and "action" are key elements in belief and also practice and preparation in anything you do gives you confidence and then belief. Just interested in who you work with in this space. Thanks man.

I love you man!!!! I needed this beyond DJING. I am a 35 year old beginner DJ but I do already DJ at a small club near my home. I landed the gig from building a reputation as a Karaoke Host... but I own my own mobile equipment. My first DJ gig was about 5 weeks ago. I had been watching your videos prior to my first gig. And its so true...i was SWEATING on my first night lol. It was so nerve racking. It is a slower club right now post covid and the owner wants me to build it up. I have been able to get the dance floor going most nights. I was feeling really down on some of the off nights or if I made a rookie mistake... but you just said everything I needed to remember and keep my confidence and head in the right place. I mean you covered it... currently I ONLY play super long sets (5-6 hours) so it is extra nerve racking lol. But now I have a 7 hour gig this saturday for an outdoor event before my club gig. I am super fortunate and lucky and I need to remember that and rock it out. Ive gotten a lot of compliments but all I remember are my mistakes. Anyways. I am growing within the discomfort and anxiety and you said all the right things... i love your perspective. Salute!

I discovered tech house at 35 and it was instant love, got sucked into the genere to the point I started going to events alone and even got interested in mixing. Doubt I will ever perform for a crowd as it's not my thing but dancing my ass off at a rave wasn't either so time will tell.

Thank you Andrew!! This has been absolutely fantastic to hear your suggestions on how to make moves as an older and even younger DJ's for that matter to get into the next steps and potentially make something of all the hours upon hours of hard work, dreams, worn carpet, noise complaints and sore ears... haha I for one and obviously amongst many involved in this Club Ready Tribe have the utmost respect for what your doing and it's classes like this, that you put out free to the public and to those aspiring DJ's just goes to show how much you love, care and truly believe in all those you are reaching out out to. Always learning!! And... Any time you want to go on one one of your little rants lol, I'll always be there listening, no matter what it is man... So rant away!!! hahaha Your passion for us DJ's is really something to be appreciated. Thanks again mate and keep up the good work! RESPECT!!!

Great video and advice Andrew!! I love both the technical and personal sides that you cover off in your videos, with such ease. Its clearly obvious that you are both an entertainer and a communicator. I remember my first mobile gig, in the 80's, which was a wedding. My equipment was a couple of CD players and fixed speed turntables and a basic light setup. As the MC/DJ it was like being thrown to the wolves and I was incredibly nervous but I quickly learned that the job wasn't about being a turntable wizard but about entertaining people with good track selection, to suit the mood of the crowd. Like you, I've found that the best gigs are those where you and the crowd are in sync, not necessarily those where you get to play what you want. I still like to keep my hand in these days with the odd party and family/friend gig but mostly I'm happy playing sessions to myself. I think I've still got it in me to club DJ but at 54, its not where I personally am any longer. I still love the music and I'm incredibly impressed by some of the house/tech house that is being released today. If I decide to dabble in anything then I think production is the route that I'll take. I will keep watching your videos as I really enjoy the positive vibe you exude. Cheers Michael

Tip! If you're in your 40's or older, I bet you and your friends have kids in their late teens and early 20's. Ask THEM to show up early when you get your first local gigs, even if you have to bribe them to do it. Offer them to play for free next time they have a private party. Bonus gig for you. There you have your first 10-15 early birds helping you getting that dance floor going. They probably already know the club, better than you, so ask them what they like to hear and what usually make the dance floor going. You can turn that into ''I'll play some songs just for you''.

I have gig'd hundreds of shows over the 14 years of DJing and producing. I now find myself much happier and fulfilled just streaming at home than trying to get gigs elsewhere. It's so much more peaceful and easy going - I can play what I want, when I want and I don't have to travel anywhere. I can work on building my stream, site, and followers over time and enjoy the process. I'm now 34 years old and being around a bunch of drugged out 20-something year olds is not that appealing honestly. Most of the gigs in California are disapointing anyways in one fashion or another. I also just work on production more than anything and if its meant to be, maybe one of those labels will invite me to play at their label nights at a club in the future :) There is always a way for anyone willing to do the work and show their passion in their work! Be stoic. Don't be outcome based. Just enjoy the ride and do what you love. If its meant to happen, it will!

Thanks Andrew, an inspiring video like this is definitely something I need to see as I turn 40 at the end of the year. It's been over 10 years since I was last dj'ing but I am coming back and I do need these types of little reassurances that I am doing the right thing. It's funny you say about friends and family wanting you to dj at events. It happened all the time to me - people I worked with in my other job, neighbours, friends - it was all great and a privilege to be asked to dj at their important occasions weddings, birthday's and more. The one thing I sometimes felt was that on some occasions it was difficult to separate me being a guest and the dj at some of these events. Occasionally it would have been nice just to be the opposite side of the dj booth letting my hair down. Mostly though that feeling was overridden by seeing people having a good time and getting that buzz from those on the dancsefloor :)
