I built a Chicken Coop and I'm calling it Cluckingham Palace. This is a custom built structure that wraps around a tree in my backyard. It matches the farmhouse style and color scheme of the workshop.

Cluckingham Palace - too funny! Chicks are so cute! And what a palace they have!!! Can't imagine boss lady wanting to buy a pre-fab when she has a Ben around! She was probably trying to challenge you to make something wonderful. Looking awesome, dude! Can't wait to see the finished product! Love the technical difficulties!

Heh. I’m about 85% finished with building a chicken tractor I designed. We’ve got plenty of space so I decided to go mobile and not have to deal with a fixed coop with a dirt floor. Let the hens run weed and insect control and fertilize. Wood prices are insane. Project should’ve cost $200-300, but I stopped counting at like $700. Also, you should check out a Kreg pocket hole jig. I’ve got the new model and a little portable one you can clamp in place. Both are invaluable and make strong joints so much easier.

with the dogs running around all the time and just how much wood cutting is done, I hope a good vaccuum or dust extractor is high on the priority list for things to get. Don't want to yourself or the dogs to be breathing in so much saw dust.

I'm curious, what kind of screws do you use for the strong ties @11:14? I ask bc every time I use screws for the strong ties they are either too big or too small. I can't seem to find the right size screw for those strong tie holes... Love the gable roof btw. I'm gonna do a gambrel roof for my 10x20 workshop. Not looking forward to adding the plywood by myself, or even with my friend's help lol
@BenTardif
@BenTardif 3 жыл бұрын
They’re just regular exterior screws. Here, they’re either 1 1/4 or 1 5/8 inch long screws. I think generally you’re supposed to use nails with strong ties but I made a few executive decisions during this build.

Are you worried about the wood rotting out on the concrete slab?
@BenTardif
@BenTardif 3 жыл бұрын
The wood that’s in direct contact with the concrete is meant for this type of situation. If I ever do need to swap it out, there is a process to do that. Wouldn’t be easy but definitely possible. Though I don’t anticipate that could be an issue for a very long time

@@BenTardif Are you putting anything else on it or is it just a regular pressure treated board? I have had pressure treated boards split or rot on me still.

Wood prices are crazy nower days, so seeing you using whole boards and sheets mostly and not not using the offcuts hurts a little bit. The build looks totally beautyful, but I hope you use the offcuts in the rest of the build. Keep up the good work.
