Clueless American Speaks Arabic and THIS HAPPENS 😱 In Singapore?

I searched for Arabs in Singapore in order to build relationships and shock them with my mediocre Arabic.
I speak the Levantine Dialect of Arabic specifically the Jordanian dialect and in this video I spoke with Egyptians, a Moroccan and a Jordanian. Each of these groups speak a different Arabic dialect. Enjoy as you watch their reactions to my Arabic!

Time and time again, I have seen people completely forget themselves once their own language is spoken. It's like a beautiful music piece playing in their heart and it connects people. Abu, you're an inspiration to all of us. I am Canadian and personally don't know Arabic but I also speak several languages from the far east. I read that you were from Jordan but now I see that you lived there for a year and your Arabic language abilities are beautiful. It's nice that you're connecting and making other ppl happy in this world. !! I look forward to more videos from you. Peace

You are doing good with your Arabic dialects, congrats. I feel you will get there. If you master even one dialect plus literary Arabic (with all its syntax and grammar that even Arabs, 90% of them can't use properly) you would be a genius-level scholar in my opinion. There's just the minor issue of using "ya habibi" outside of any context. Just use it (in dialects where it is used, in other dialects habibi is used in its literal sense only) just use it like you would use the word "buddy." You would not be exchanging pleasantries in an English language conversation and then stop, and then say "Buddy, buddy."

And you can have the chance to meet a local Singaporean (born & bred) who is of an Arab descent too, & I'm proudly to say that I'm one of them 😉 And for your information, to be precise, I'm a Hadhrami Arab & also a descendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through Imam Ali (RA) & Imam Hussein (RA), although I'm culturally (or should I say, practically) Malay in the sense that I'm unable to speak my ancestor's language & instead, my mother tongue (1st language) is Malay & hence, I identify myself as a Malay if an average person on the streets of Singapore & Malaysia interacts with me. This is kinda similar to how a Thai person of Chinese descent identify themselves as a Thai & they speak Thai instead of Chinese. This is because my ancestors, whom they originally hailed from Hadhramaut, Yemen, had migrated to Semarang, Central Java, Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) some 4 centuries ago & subsequently, their offsprings (which includes my great-grandfather), further migrated to Singapore, where it was once a British Colony & since then, they made Singapore as their home & intermingled with the community here.

There are actually about 8000 Singaporean Arabs. Most of them trace their ancestry to Hadhramaut in Yemen. But unfortunately, most of them don't speak Arabic anymore, and they've assimilated with the Malays to a certain degree. How you can tell that they are Arabs and not Malays is usually from their surnames, or if their names have an Arabic honorific like "Syed".

I've gotten reactions like this with Urdu. I don't claim to be fluent in it, in fact I understand it more than I can speak it, as I find some of the pronunciations hard, but I can speak enough to get me through a basic convo. I'm a white English guy (although my great grandma's side of the family are Indian, but she moved to England with her Scottish husband around 1900 so that's as far as the Indian connection goes, do speaking Urdu or anything else India related hasn't really been a thing. I was unaware that I was part Indian until doing a family tree and DNA history) I've just been around people a lot who speak Urdu and it's amazing what you can pick up. It's also an eye opener. You can pick up on people commenting about you when they think you don't know what they are saying. Sometimes good things. Sometimes bad. Sometimes downright racist.ive had people who don't know that I know Urdu, and who assume I'm 100% white English because I look it (there's only one or two of the people in my massive family of people who look like they have inherited any Indian genes such as dark skin, facial features etc) and I've picked up on them saying very hurtful racist comments directed at me, or sometimes talking about English people in general. I've also witnessed those same people to bright red, and on one occasion, run off, as I start to converse with them in Urdu, and ask why they felt the red to say these things about me when I had been nothing but nice towards them. Still makes me chuckle now.
@abuasher

Nice work with the Urdu! And I’m sorry that you’ve had some bad experiences.

@@abuasher it's ok,I'm thick skinned lol and I found it more amusing to see the person's reaction when thy realise that they maybe should think before they speak. It gave me a good chuckle lol. I'm enjoying your videos by the way, I appreciate people such as yourself that put in the hard work and time to make the videos for us. On behalf of myself and others. Thank you. Or perhaps I should say "Buhat buhat shukriya!" (I think I spelled that correctly, like I say I can understand Urdu more than I can say it, and I don't read Urdu, and if I have to write Urdu words down I have to do it using an English alphabet, which again I mainly write it phonetically using an English alphabet!)

However if you're a brown south-Asian guy who speaks Arabic, it's not as impressive to the Arabs. They almost never react like that with me lol. More like the Moroccan guy that had no reaction. It's more of a surprise if your'e white or look far eastern. His Arabic isn't bad, especially that he knows Egyptian and Jordanian dialects to a good degree.

Yeah… that’s the sad reality. I guess at the end of the day it’s that they expect less from me since my ethnicity hasn’t often taken the time to learn other languages 🥲
