I think the only thing that Cher got blatantly wrong was her prejudice towards Travis, that didn't allow her to see he was a much better match for Tai than Elton.

@iprobablyforgotsomething3 ай бұрын
It's because aside from liking fashion and caring how she looked and making no attempts to hide that (which traditionally in media either means she's a character that's stupid or a snob), she frames things in terms that make sense to her and her view of the world instead of in fancy-schmancy intellectual terms. . Like her side of the debate against Amber in class was in a teen-lingo dialect of layman's terms, instead of sounding like a thesis essay. She used examples based on her own life instead of citing researched published work to support her opinion. . Yet despite that, she did have an actual argument that if people calmed down and put the effort in to redistribute resources so that, despite the unexpected extra population that "did *not* RSVP", no one would go without, they could "totally party with the Haitians". . And that it did "not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty" aka refugees and the like could hardly warn in advance that they would unexpectedly need to flee and suddenly turn up here seeking a new and safer life. But America was supposed to be a country that understood that, given the origins of how its European settlers ended up here in the first place. . If I'm remembering that scene accurately, that is, lol.

This movie is tottally underated. Teenage years are about self discovering and evolution. It´s more relatable than Gossip Girl, for example. This is a real history about discovering of love and developing friendship, which is core of high school years.

Cher is a girl’s girl. She understands her power and does not seek to abuse it, rather she uses it to elevate the women close to her. She doesn’t shy away from conflict or disagreement with anyone because if she is talking to you at all, she has placed you on her level.
@alannahhurley3863 ай бұрын
However I don't think the original Emma character was that naive either. There's a whole scene in the book where Emma and Mr Knightly argue about what a gentleman expects in a wife. And Emma understands that most men want a pretty, young lady who obediently takes directions.
@jenni4claire3 ай бұрын
Yes. She est only naïve about men, and fur ibis reasons. She couldn't see through Mr Elton or realise Mr Knightly was her best match, for example. But she could manage her ghastly dad perfectly.

"Cher is different than Emma" Lists things that are the same as in the book. Emma in the book does recognize that she has privilege (hence why she brings food to poor people) and she does things that are kind... even when misguided. Clueless is actually a very good modernized retelling of Emma.
@happygucci50943 ай бұрын
She doesn’t experience people in terms of class- she sees people as relational and reciprocal beings. And she languages things in her own idiosyncratic way breaking down very complex systems in a hip zeitgeisty totally Cher way. Alicia Silvertone’s acting was pitch perfect. Amazing.

I really don't like the storylines where teenage daughters step into a caregiving role for their fathers when the mom dies. You can see this in Pretty in Pink and other movies. It's like they are the replacement wife in a weird way
@melenatorr3 ай бұрын
Since "Clueless" is a loose adaptation of "Emma", who also takes care of her widowed father, the element makes sense here. But Heckerling adapted things: Mr. Woodhouse is a widower, the father of two daughters, the elder of whom is married and living away from the Woodhouse home. He has retreated into the kind of hypochondriac who has medical advice for everyone around him. Emma loves and takes care of her father, and Mr. Knightley knows that Mr. Woodhouse is part and parcel of Emma's life. Mr. Woodhouse is truly dependent upon his daughter. Cher's father is different from Mr. Woodhouse: a widower and divorced from a second wife. He has health concerns that Cher keeps an eye on, but is basically healthy, vigorous, and I think he wouldn't give medical advice if you paid him (unless it was part of a law suit). He is aggressively employed as a lawyer, to the extent of bringing coworkers to his house - if his health is hampered, t isn't by hypochondria but by overwork. Despite this, he understands why Josh wants to follow Cher and Christian to the party; and he has a lovely little scene with Cher, when she's at her low point; and he says he knows she takes care of everyone in the house.

A lot of Cher's values had transitioned into the ABC sitcom, when Rachel Blanchard had the role. In both versions, for someone who was dubbed a "dumb blonde," she was surprisingly astute. She learned the values of altruism, and of self-love, in both iterations. She never came off as snobby, in either version, but as warm and personable. Family and friends were everything to her, and she knew that there was more to life than finding a boyfriend. She didn't always need to go out, to have a good time. Thanks for the video!

I think this movie made the popular “mean” girl very realistic where they’re not always outright mean but they are definitely shallow and selfish. But with Cher’s quirks she is very likeable which makes the character arc more enjoyable because you could tell she was already a decent person albeit judgemental. She wasn’t down to earth yet which we can all relate to in high school lol

If this were to happen in real life where she still struggles to read through social cues as an adult, she may had been diagnosed to NVLD. Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a neurological condition that can persist into adulthood even after many social interactions and learning experiences. Difficulty interpreting body language, facial expressions, tone of voice and other nonverbal signals. Someone with NVLD may have trouble determining emotions, intentions and attitudes from nonverbal behavior alone. That’s why she wasn’t able to pick up that Christian is gay. Even audiences with NVLD were shocked to findout he’s gay, they find him to be “hot” at first, they normally don’t see what non NVLD people see. Imagine the series Ghost Whisperer, the main character as the non-NVLD people, the ghosts are the social cues and those people she’s doing interpretations for on what each ghost are trying tell them are those with NVLD, they can’t see the social cues the same as non-NVLD people.
