What you're hearing in the middle of this song is called "go-go" and it's native to Washington, DC (hence the title of the song). You won't really hear it anywhere else. It's generally not associated with this style of music, which is what makes this song unique. But Clutch are from the DC 'burbs and they reference the area relatively frequently in their songs. Most of Neil Fallon's lyrics are quite esoteric if they mean anything at all, so it's easy to miss them, but if you grew up in the Maryland suburbs you'll catch a local reference every now and then.

The cowbell is synonymous with go-go music a popular style that originated in D.C. look up Chuck Brown. These guys are legends around here.

I was at this show at the 9:30 club in DC....I also caught another 9:30 club show on new years a couple years back. They played this song during the ball drop and rode the go-go cowbell breakdown while Neil did a countdown on the mic.....then balloons dropped all over the crowd and a gnarly drumfill brought the song back. That crowd was ALIVE AND THERE FOR IT

Oh I should also add that back in '98 my very first band played our very first show at the White Rabbit in San Antonio and Clutch, Ultraspank, Stuck Mojo and Sevendust were the headliners. We were obviously the 2nd stage band being a bunch of rookies, but it was awesome to share the same night we these guys.

Clutch are great. Seen them a couple of times. Normally everyone at a gig wears black. Clutch shows, half the audience will be in checked shirts and baseball caps. Serious groove. The entire Earth Rocker album needs to be played. Loud. :)

I went to high school with these guys. Neil the lead singer sings in a couple other bands you should check out. The Company Band, and Dusmiur. The cowbell is local to our Go-Go respect to DC bands like Junkyard and 95 South bands of the day. I Absolutely LOVED y'all's reaction.l!

Alright, I went thru half the comments and I have not seen anyone talking about the true beat of D.C!! That beat you hear is the GOGO beat. A sound created d.c! As most of us know clutch was formed during the peak of gogo. The founding members are from Maryland and gogo was the beat of that Era. Clutch has been a staple of the DMV for a very long time and when they drop that beat we all "go hard"!
