After a few month worth of side projects and small rides near home, I'm back at it with the 916. The clutch has had a bit of a drag, and investigating inside revealed somewhat worn plates, and totally worn basket.
Meanwhile, I make a quick diversion to Ducati Newport Beach and spot some incredibly rare (and EXPENSIVE) bikes.

Hello, I am glad you set up this channel. I once owned a Ducati 916 15 years ago. Recently, I also plan to own this beautiful classic again. At the same time, I also enjoy the look forward to the renovation and look forward to sharing it with you.I am from Taiwan, my name is Weichih

Sweet - the ally basket should wear way less than the steel one

Nice music and the shots at the dealer were a bonus. I went with the same plates about a year ago. Same exact situation-difficulty getting clutch to bite out of first especially early in a ride. Basket and hub looked nowhere near the condition of yours. Gentle owner prior to me fortunately. I replaced the clutch throw out bearing as well. 2k miles give or take and the plates are still fine, no issues. My riding is more spirited as well since getting more accustomed to the bike. Not dogging it but not babying either. Barnett for now, EVR when I do the whole thing later 😉 Look forward to the next post.

I randomly stumbled on that western music recently and just had to use it. I'll probably reuse it in future videos, I love it. I've had mixed feedback in the places I've talked to about the gouging in the hub basket. Some say it's typical wear, others said mine looks particularly bad. My bike has about 20k miles on it, so it's not too crazy that the hub basket is due, but I still wouldn't be surprised if it was more abused than a typical bike.

Nice video - I am doing some background work to possibly replace my 916 clutch. I am not familiar with this type of dry clutch - isn't there also a pressure bearing somewhere? did I miss that? For the rest, I would stick with original parts - the bike manufacturer always find the best compromise in terms of quality, durability, price, etc. Aftermarket parts maximize this or that aspect only. They are rarely (almost never I dare to say) an improvement overall. For example the basket: steel is definitely more durable than aluminiu: the notices you show will take longer to get carved in the material. Aluminum sure is lighter and maybe will contribute to lower the noise due to the inherent material properties (less resonant) but will not have the same durability. My opinion (I am a mech engineer)

I totally agree OEM is usually best, and often I shoot for that. But cost is often a factor for me, so aftermarket, low cost alternatives often go on. If you watch my other videos, I often smear cheapy "autozone anodized crap" (Autozone is a chain of auto parts stores in the US that sells a lot of cheap "mods"). I need to do a video on the bike before the 916, an old Monster that had a bunch of junk on there. I bent over backwards to set closer to stock. Regarding the bearing, I can't remember.

Don’t you just love working on a bike that’s on a lift? I went Barnett on my 94 900ss; might try a different brand next time. Newport Ducati is my shop. Love the vids.

The lift is absolutely game changing! I wish I had it when I started the project. I like the vib at DNPB a lot, several people stopped to chat with little pressure to buy. . The shop is a bit too far for me though. Brea Ducati (Socal) and Bert's are all much closer. Bert's particularly drives me nuts, the sales team is like vultures.

I forgot to ask: which workshop manual are you using? I live in Europe (Italy) and maybe it won't even be available, but I may get it. thanks

Throughout the project I used three manuals. The first source I relied on was Desmo Times' Mantinenance and Modification Guide, written by LT Snyder: desmotimes.com/product-category/products/books-promotional-items/ LT is really passionate about the brand, and provides a lot of insight you can't find elsewhere. Second one I used was the Haynes Service Manual for the 916 series. haynes.com/en-us/ducati/916-v-twins/1994-1999?gclid=CjwKCAjwwqaGBhBKEiwAMk-FtKTCtybdb0Rps17e-i5b5sxrCyICtBOO7 Finally, I had an OEM factory service manual that I got on Ebay. I found this one to be the least useful, least user friendly. No link because you have to buy them as the become available.

@@VoyagerMoto thanks for the tips. I got an original Ducati workshop manual but it's not very informative, it only covers the main adjustments - so no clutch overhaul. I will try to get the books you mention (I live in Europe)
