CLUTCH is one of those obscure bands that have been around for 20+ years that haven't broken into main stream. You'll find out that they tend to be a musician's band. Like a musician's musician. They are appreciated by musicians and draw them in with their gravity. The topics range from the civil war , to something resembling "midnight in the garden of good and evil." With the song "cypress grove." This band needs to be praised for their originality and musicianship. I will always preach the good word of Clutch.

"Got another dog" and changing the locks refers to him coming back to the home they shared. The dog used to be his dog so it won't attack him. The locks are the same, he's still got the key. He's prayed for angels to change his mind, now the pendulum is swinging back on her. The need for "justice" and emotions have boiled over. He's taking her to walk the longest mile, referencing death.
@societydwellingifd7663 жыл бұрын
This song tells the story of a spurned lover who murders his ex-lover because she has left him for another (richer) man. At the beginning of the song, he wishes to be lost along the way so that he will not commit the crime. Midway through- he is wishing that she took extra security measures so that there would be a chance he would not have murdered her. In the end, he is making the ‘long walk’ towards death/redemption, that one can infer is the walk from his cell to his execution.

It's an insightful comment about Neil's tone being authoritative. It serves him well in "Burning Beard" where he plays Evangelical preacher to a horde of robots who've taken over the world. As for The Regulator, I'm relaying this second hand, but the song is about going to the house to murder his ex. He's telling her she should have taken pains to keep him out but, because she didn't change the locks, he was able to get in, and because she didn't get another dog, the one they had recognized him and didn't bark, allowing him to sneak in and kill her. The longest mile is the road to perdition.

Clutch is tricky. Very, very tricky. There are some good suggestions in here, but also a few I'd steer clear of until later. This song's alright but it does a disservice to the imagery, wit, energy and groove the band can get going, even compared to other songs on the same album. "Electric Worry" is a pretty standard blues-rock song; catchy, good, but doesn't get to the crux of why people really dig into the band either. There's also a lot of songs that bend too far the other way. "Burning Beard" I love but that's not what you use to sell someone on the band, with the riff's time signature and the lyrics liable to throw someone for a loop. A lot of the album it's from is almost all "advanced-listening" level. Stuff from their self-titled and earlier, like "Spacegrass" or "Escape from the Prison Planet" kind of have the same problem; same reason I love "Texan Book of the Dead" but I'd never show that to someone as a point to dive in. I'd say save these for later. Clutch's wheelhouse (to me, obviously) is a sweet spot between blues rock, southern rock and stoner rock with some fun wigged-out sense of lyrics. As time's gone on, they've really streamlined their act, which might not tickle the real heads' sensibilities, but there's absolutely no shame in skewing more recent. If you want to play it safe and get the all-killer-no-filler version of what Clutch does and does well: The Mob Goes Wild (*), Cypress Grove (*), The Incomparable Mr. Flannery, Earth Rocker, X-Ray Visions (*), A Quick Death in Texas (*), Sucker for the Witch. Once you're feeling a little braver and have a feel for the vibe: Mice and Gods, 10001110101, Power Player, 10,000 Witnesses, 50,000 Unstoppable Watts, In Walks Barbarella, Vision Quest. From then in you can probably start making more sense of the other suggestions people are making and decide if you wanna dive deeper (which I'd totally recommend!) or be happy with the context you've got. Too many words but whatever. Not the first time, won't be the last.
@devildart6 жыл бұрын
GasparLewis that was spot on. I always thought that Subtle hustle would be a good introduction to Clutch for this channel, but I can't disagree with any of your choices either. It was in the Walking Dead season 2 Episode 8 - Nebraska The Regulator is a clock with it's swinging pendulum... Running outta time. Basically, he was coming back to his old home, pissed off about her leaving him for someone "better". He decides not to waste any more time being in pain and chooses to break in and ultimately kill her.

As a die hard fan of clutch I must say that you can't Judge a band on just one song, this album in general is timeless from front to back. Honestly they are one of the few band I can listen to an album from front to back. There's just a unique epicness to them and have been killing it for years!!! Thank you for enjoying a band that has gotten me through so many hard times!!!

Alright, Clutch. Regulator is a good song. Burning Beard, Earth Rocker, Electric Worry, Elephant Riders and Dragonfly are far more dynamic and rocking. Clutch's power, lyrically speaking, has always been the imagery. For example, I don't know exactly what Oh, Isabella is about, but it sounds like they're referencing the disastrous arrival of Europeans to South America. I just love the well crafted versus that draw a scene for the listener. Personally, I think Burning Beard is the best song they've written so far. Incidentally, I've seen Clutch play about twice a year, every year for two decades now. I've never seen a bad show. They're one of the best live bands going.

This is the greatest band on the planet. It's not just the music, they have been touring for 27 years and love to do it. The songs played live take the music to another level and I have seen few shows/bands that play a better show (in my heyday, I got and took the chance to see these guys over a 100 times) that's how good they are to me. I think this was probably not the best song for a first Clutch! song but one of my favorites for a band that I do not dislike one song by. Muchas Veces is one of my favorite songs along with Dragonfly, Purerockfury of course the whole album and song by the same name. Even if you don't do a review of them, check out other Clutch! songs, you will not be disappointed. They have 12 albums and various other lps and the like, so you got plenty to check out.
