It only worked because he failed to move his king to f2 or h2. After this, there's simply no move that Alice can make that survives the mating web short of sacrificing the queen on f5. This, obviously, fails as well. That aside, being lucky is sometimes much better than being accurate, I suppose. And, it's much, much more fun.

Да. Алиса прекрасно понимала что что счет идет не на пешки. Тем более что С:d3 это выстрел в пустоту: угрожает Л:h5, с неизбежным матом. Парадоксально, но то как она сыграла Сf3! - единственный ход, который пока еще отражает угрозу (Л:h5) и заодно ставит хитрую ловушку вскрывая вертикаль белого короля и готовя смертельную связку для ферзя. Редкий случай, но тут видимо, сами звезды так сошлись)

Bf3 was a clever clearance sacrifice. It was a desperate play, but it worked beautifully. King needed to slip to f2 or h2 to allow for the mating net to do its deed. He played with great celerity at first and it was a decisive attack, his frustration was quite palpable.

He can't attack her pawn with his queen because that would leave his king vulnerable to be attacked by her rook. So that move is not allow.

When am opponent makes an illegal move (such as here, failing to see the queen was pinned and could not leave the g file to give mate) the cluch director is called and penalizes the offending player by adding a minute to the clock of the other and compelling the offender to continue the game, making a legal move,.with the touched piece.

When he moved his queen to take her rook, he didn’t see that her other rook in back row was then checking the king meaning she wins, so they went back a turn a reset and the clock so they could keep playing - silly mistake by him
