Newbie luthier here from central AL. Keep up the good work man, watching your videos helped me a ton as I built my first acoustic and I managed to finish it last week. My bridge wasn’t the “standard” shape either - I used two of the short cam clamps from StewMac through the sound hole. I took a piece of scrap wood and traced the profile of my bridge onto it the best I could, then carved/sanded it down until it made reasonable contact with most of the top of the bridge, and used it as a makeshift caul. I also cut a piece of rubber sheet (rubber bands wrapped around it could work too) and CA-glued it to the caul to help it contact the whole bridge and apply more even pressure across the whole surface.

Great idea to make a caul! I will be getting some soundhole clamps sometime soon so that I can get more clamping pressure. Those with a caul should work much better!

You’re doing so much better than I would. I would for sure have to restart like 9 time before I even get to this point. I think it looks great, and I’d love to buy it if I lived closer to you.

I appreciate the encouragement for sure. And all the comments! Thanks again!

Hey Chris, don’t beat yourself up man it looks good, You are learning as you go along I messed up my 3rd guitar build so much I almost threw it in the trash. But I now have 9 complete builds under my belt, I have learned to just slow down that was my biggest issue I tried to get to much done at one time. Good luck brother👍👍🙏🇺🇸🎸🎹🇺🇸👨🏻🦯👨🏻🦯

Its looking great Chris. That bridge could have been clamped through the sound hole with a couple of cauls.

Yes, some soundhole clamps are on my list!

I saw some people working with a "negative" tape when it comes to bridge glue-up. What I mean by that is that you place tape on the body and put on your bridge where it belongs, then trace the shape and cut out the inner part of your tape. That way you can place the bridge on your top and all the glue squeeze out goes on the tape. Bear with me, it is kind of hard to explain what I mean... I guess you've seen it. That worked for me on my ukulele build.

I understand what you are saying because I did the exact same thing on my ukulele build. It seemed to be easier that way because the ukulele bridge was just a rectangle. But yeah, glue cleanup was pretty easy.

Aw man, I feel your pain. Woodworking can be frustrating at times and I can't imagine how many potential pitfalls there are in building an acoustic guitar of your own design. You mentioned something that I hope you take away as a positive. It's when you said that you learned a lot from this build. Keep working and moving ahead. I love the design you put into this guitar and the fact that you keep moving forward. Be well.

There's a LOT of variation in wood colors. Even from the same tree, you can get purple, brown, light and dark pieces. I've got a stack of 50 fretboards all from the same tree and there is a lot of variation just in that pile... In other news... The guitar looks great. Regarding finishing... When you get to the point that you are spraying finishes, you'll be MUCH happier. There's just no way to get a pro level finish without spraying. If you've already got a compressor, you can get a decent inexpensive spray gun for around $100. The downside is that you have to have a spray area and the finishes can be toxic. I talked to Robbie about his spray area... He paints outside in his back yard!

Thanks for the comment! Spraying finishes is definitely in my future, I think. Just need the proper equipment and I‘ll give it a shot.

Hey Chris, sorry about the frustration. You put a lot of learning into your second build. It was pretty darned ambitious, most people would do several builds before attempting a Florentine cutaway with a custom bridge this soon. I would definitely call it a win overall. Your getting a lot of learning out of the way. 😉
@CMRWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Overall, I’ve learned a ton. And I did kinda go into the build thinking of it like an experimental build to see if I could pull it off. Considering florentine cutaway section of the build, I pulled it off, so I guess that was a success! But the rest of it has been problematic with so many small issues. It’s all helping me progress and get better, so it’s a good thing I guess!

Hey mate. Excellent video again, and very authentic with the kid in the background 😅. Concerning the rosewood, it is probably just a matter of time. Rosewood is purple until it oxidizes to brown. So the stewmac-piece might have been lying around longer as a blank?
