I really appreciate you posting this entire series. I am preparing to build my second kit guitar, not exactly the same I know, but I am learning where I will probably have challenges and how to overcome them. Thank you

Kit guitars are great way to get into lutherie! There’s a channel on KZbin called The Clueless Luthier. The guy, Mark, built a couple of kit guitars and has a video series for each talking about the challenges he was facing. He then moved on after that (and after some tooling up) to build a guitar from scratch. It’s interesting to see the progression. Anyway, good luck to you!

It really looks good. I like the contrast of the dark neck and light body.
@CMRWoodworks3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I like that too. I‘ll probably go with a dark combination on the next one. Turns out it‘s really difficult to hide imperfections on light colored wood.

I’ve made 2 electrics and can definitely sympathise with your frustrations with mistakes! This series definitely has me hooked on an acoustic build next!

Awesome man! I plan on making an electric at some point! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Tooth picks are great for locating pins you can just chop them flush to the fret slots, re saw the slot and the fret covers anything so you can’t see it in the end

Thanks for the tip! I‘ll keep it in mind!

@@CMRWoodworks Kudos to you for editing likely gigabytes of movie files just to create a new episode for us! I watch them to the end!

That‘s awesome! I‘m glad to know that there are people who don‘t mind the longer style videos. Multi-video series builds with a lot of talking are not really the most popular kinds of videos to make for KZbinrs, but I make them because they are the kinds of videos that I like to watch as well. I guess since it‘s not a full-time gig and I have a career in the real world, I have more freedom to make the kinds of videos I want to make. I think that even if KZbin and content creation were my full time job, I would still do a lot of the same videos. I went through a period several years ago where I tried to keep everything brief and only 1 video per project, but I much prefer feeling like I can „talk out“ what I‘m doing to the imaginary person behind the camera. It somehow helps to settle in my mind what I need to do, if that makes sense, haha. Anyway, I appreciate your comment!

The first video of yours I've watched: good stuff! I like your problem solving, great use of hand tools where appropriate, and owning up to the inevitable screw-ups we all make. Haven't seen previous vids yet so I don't know how you cut your fretboard taper, but the way I get the FB end square is, assuming you start with a square blank before cutting the taper, you use the tapered offcut against a fence to put the end back to exactly square when you want to cut that. (Incidentally I actually put a subtle curve on the fretboard end afterwards because I think it looks more elegant, but that's a choice and you need to start with a square cut in any case.) And toothpicks are a good (better, IMHO) substitute for drill bits for the fretboard locators on the neck because you don't have battle to take them out, you just cut through them. Good luck - I'm going to backtrack and watch the rest!

Thanks so much for the comment. I don’t know why I didn’t think about using the fretboard taper offcut! That would have been easier for sure. Yes, I will not be using the drill bits as pins. I still don’t know yet if I caused too much tear out when I pried them out. I’ll know one I radius the fretboard and install frets, I suppose. Thanks again for taking the time to type out a comment! And thanks for watching!

take and make locator pins for brad nails, on the template in beteen the 2nd and 18th fret, then make sAME SLOTS IN NECK then glue up is easy and doesnt move around
@CMRWoodworks3 жыл бұрын
I will probably not use the small drill bits again as locator pins. I hope they didn‘t snag the wood too much when I pried them put. They were probably too tight in the holes I drilled. Thanks for watching!

It’s looking good, I’m building 2 parlor sized guitars for my boys. I just finished getting the necks tight to the body’s now I have to glue the fretboards on to finish the neck profiles. God Bless Brother🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🎸🎸🎹🎼👨🏻🦯👨🏻🦯

Yeah I remember you commenting before about building two guitars at the same time. You have a lot on your plate with two neck angles at the same time! Can you believe there are some builders who are building 3 or 4 at a time? I can‘t imagine that. Good luck on yours!

Thanks Mike! I started woodworking a couple of years after we had our first kid. A year after that was when I had the idea to build a guitar, but didn‘t get to actually do that until 7 years later when I started on this guitar now around a year ago. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
