How can I protect my home, if I go into a nursing home and end up on medicaid or medical and im the last surviving spouse?

In the scenario you mentioned, if there were no spouse living, what would be the benefit to an irrevocable trust rather than gifting the assets to the children? Especially considering that the trust has certain additional tax related obligations? Thanks!
