In 1998 I remembered alot of people especially the westerd world predicted that Indonesia will turn into many small countries just like yugoslavia. Alot of things happend that time a very dark history ..20 years later look where we are right now . indonesia is still standing very strong as part of G20 and for me still is the best place to live.

It's strange that this almost 1 hour long documentary doesn't mention any role the US played in the military take over by General Suharto and the killing of about 1 million Indonesians. Vincent Bevins' highly acclaimed book "The Jakarta Method" documented this. Less than a year ago, Glenn Greenwald of the Intercept posted a 1.5 hour KZbin video which included an interview of Bevins on his book. I'll share the link to the video.

This is a very good insight into recent Indonesia history. It is a balanced perspective. I do think that Indonesia has gone a long way (on the right track). Western media does not normally provide a fair analysis. However, if you compare Indonesia to other Muslim majority countries in the Middle East and if you compare it to countries like Thailand and Myanmar, the political system is definitely more mature. This is a country (where I genuinely think) has a potential to be great.

I don’t understand the bitterness of some comments from Indonesian, the transformation that happened to TNI is great sign of progress that cant be found in other country, a military body that once had a huge political power and rule the country, willing to give it away when they have total capability to hold or take the total power and create a military junta government, yes the remnants are still here to influence but thats part of progress, we cant expect the status quo to give up completely, see for other 10 or 20 when all retired new order general has probably dead and see a younger generation of general who have a different mindset

Im Indonesian and between all the presidents (excluding Soekarno coz I havent born yet) Habibie and Jokowi were whom I respect the most. Habibie was a shortest-period president but he create/modified many laws based of what people want (the press,, the military,,etc), and it gave huge impact until now. He even step down himself coz some people still didnt satisfied about his leadership and he didnt want another riot happen. Jokowi on other hand, canceled some law-in-the-making when he Saw many people gave negative response,, and I really respect that coz that shows he's really has people best interest and how many leader takes back his own Word for people like that?

Im Indonesian and even by prevailing democracy atmosphere that we lived today, this story about Military involvement in our politics in the past especially about G30S PKI remain a very sensitive and divisive issue. I personally admired the Governor of National Resilience Institute Lt. Gen (Ret) Agus Widjojo for his knowledge about the past and his wisdom to outreach those group of people that left out, isolated and discriminated due to their relationship with those persecuted by New Order Regime. Still, the dialogue and process to heal the trauma of Military dark intervention in our past remain unclear even though President Jokowi administration had vowed to settle this.. at least in legal aspect

Well, considering those two are the most charismatic, smart and powerful leaders of Indonesia, either you love them or hate them, they built Indonesia from the ground. To be fair, if you looking and dig more deep, they did whatever they can do so Indonesia able to survive at the time. There are so many behind and beyond the scenes than whatever up to public, underground movement, to keep Indonesia intact, while a lot of western countries analysts at the time predict Indonesia to be failed country like Afghanistan. Indonesia 'spring' is years before Arab 'spring', it just like whatever political conspiracies things are tested first in Indonesia before other countries. While Muammar Khadafi ended being slayed and tortured by his own people, Soeharto buried like a king. While United States torn in the last election, ended in attack on the capitol hill, unlike Trump, Prabowo choose to join forces with Jokowi to defend the country. Indonesia is anomali.

Makanya waktu Hiroshima & Nagasaki dibom kita mendapat banyak bantuan dr Jepang untuk segera memproklamasikan kemerdekaan, dengan itu Sekutu tidak lagi bisa mengobrak abrik lagi. Unlike Myanmar military, still thinking they're in feudal times. The need to rule the citizen thru traditional military despots (generals). Power suppose in the hands of the people, not any institution.

We should remember, the majority of the army involved in Indonesian Politics are Indonesian Ground Forces (TNI-AD), they are Soeharto's favorite. Indonesian Airforce is dumped during Soeharto regime, due to their past that shows loyalty to Soekarno. The remnant of New Order that still involved in politics now are mostly came from TNI-AD too, and if you notice, the army Generals who always bring up the PKI issue have TNI-AD backgrounds. No one in Airforce or Navy bothers with PKI issue, since only Ground forces will triumph by bringing up the long gone communism/PKI issue.
