Despite having fewer than six million inhabitants and an area of just 280 square miles or 730 square kilometers, an area similar to that of New York City and half the size of others such as London or Mexico City, Singapore is a military powerhouse.
It may come as a surprise to you and perhaps you have never heard of it, but Singapore has one of the best-equipped armed forces in the world. Armed Forces that were designed by Israel and that today would be capable of defeating practically all its neighbors. In this video we tell you all the details about the less familiar face of Singapore.

There is an important point which you missed out. Military conscription was a way to create a new Singaporean identity in a very multi-ethnic state. This was crucial to get Chinese, Indians, and Malays to see themselves as Singaporean first and identify with their ethnic identity second.

and we are also an immigrant state. many new people become citizens here. the conscription helps in some way to build a common identity, not to the first generation who do not need to serve, but their children.

This is why I think EU military could be a great thing, it puts attach strings to countires making it harder to leave It could help create a European identity in a multinational organization Seeing the EU military on top of the charts would make Europeans proud and this would also help with the whole EU identity thing And EU army could easily rival the Russian

@@danialroslan1531 Yeah but I still find military conscription still conservative when it only allows men giving this impress that men are super strong and only they can save the country like if the purpose of military conscription is to protect the country would it make sense to allow women , like Israel men and women have to do military conscription together there's no gender bias and yes I know there are still issues in the military with women in Israel when it comes to some military possessions but still I think South Korea especially should update there military conscription and make it mandatory for women to do and let the terms served be both equal , in my opinion Singapore military conscription is unnecessary it isn't in a big threat like South Korea , Israel and China to be honest I find Singapore military conscription is some conservative tradition the military needs to scrap and focus their time on important military stuff that's my opinion I have nothing against Singapore military conscription

This is a good update on this country. I observed the military members of Singapore when they visited and trained in the US. These soldiers are professional and very respectful. They are always putting themselves in a "learning moment", and they don't take things off the cuff. If I had to be involved in an armed conflict this would be one of the military forces that I would choose to work together.

yet the military has a offensive doctrine.. a plan to mobilize the army down south to capture and hold Johor. and also a plan for a seaborn invasion on Batam. of course this will only materialise if war happens. but being a tiny state with a powerful army, singapore can possibly turn desperate and attack its neighbours in future.

Thought our total military personnel is closer to ~500k instead of 1.2m though, though with our declining birth rate I imagine our defence ministry might be concerned & thus possibly be less willing to grant deferment from conscription for various reasons e.g. sporting competitions. Not all immigrants might take up citizenship also which might lead to the country having less people to defend more people (as our population continues to grow due to immigration, @ least before the pandemic prompted some expats to return to their home countries e.g. more priority for vaccines as citizens back in those countries, fatigue from Singapore's relatively tighter pandemic-related restrictions/laws)

You could not compare the 2 situation where Singapore a city with multiple people living together who by choice or otherwise decided to form a country based on equality and justice to all its citizens of different religions and backgrounds to isreal who is country who is built on destroying the indigenous inhabitants and replacing them by a different religious group with with oppression and Injustice against the indigenous people .a country who gives equal rights to the people living in it deserves respect from outsiders and strong bonds between its citizens and the other one meaning Israel who destroyed thousands of Palestinian towns and villages and expelled millions of the indigenous people and replaced with millions of other nationalities simply because they are Jews?AMAZING?There is no comparison there is nothing in common between them.one is peaceful and the other one is an aggressor who will never have peace, one looks after the indigenous people and the other one kill and rubb the indigenous from their rights. and many more differences that you can't count so please don't compare good with evil and just with injust or peaceful with aggression

I am an American citizen who has the DEEPEST respect for Singapore. True, I am a tourist only. After the SARS epidemic at the turn of the century, the airlines were essentially giving away tickets to Singapore. Like most Americans, I viewed the country as a brutal, repressive, totalitarian dictatorship, essentially dirt under my feet, a pariah state to be avoided. I bought two tickets, strictly for the frequent flier miles. I don't think we were in the country for 20 minutes before my views changed. Radically changed. Very proud people. Multiethnic people, who don't loot and smash and steal and kill each other, as happens in some other "enlightened" nations. Nice people, helpful people. A clean subway system that is trash and litter free. Some of the most amazing food on the planet. A country that I am proud to say, I love! No, they aren't perfect. The climate in Singapore is abominable. The heat, the first heat you feel as you exit the aircraft cannot be imagined, it smacks you in the face, 2 seconds before your glasses fog up. And stay fogged up. And I might add, if you are going for the first time, pack a sweater. As hot as the government keeps the outside, it's that cold in the airconditioned buildings. And complaint #2, I still cannot get back in! God bless that little nothing of a country! Keep it safe, protect it to the hilt! Singapore is a model to the world. No, they aren't perfect. Neither are we, neither are you. If things go as we are hoping, we will be back in late November, 2022. Stay well, Singapore. And thank you, just for being Singapore. (And I might add, I'm proud to have learned the roll my "Mexican" cousins played in building up that small nation. Odd how a Chinese-Muslim nation just happens to have two active synagogues within its borders)

its comments like yours that make us proud to be Singaporeans by no merit other than being born in the right place. Yet there are sadly scores of us that complain to no end about all kinds of shit, regardless of how the gov runs the country, to the weather, to the buildings we live in, to every goddamn trivial nonsense.... forgetting that we have it SO MUCH BETTER than so many other people, cos singaporeans haven't had the chance to experience how things are outside of these safe walls. which is also why we get scammed and cheated all the time, the downside of such a safe country is the lack knowledge of what danger looks like. Lets hope the borders open again and we can welcome visitors like you who enjoyed your time here! Take care!

Think transport & infrastructure quality can vary quite a bit in Singapore too e.g. our Changi Airport with its luxury Jewel shopping mall is contrasted against the dilapidated Golden Mile Complex & Tower (whose false ceiling above the taxi stand had also collapsed several months ago, while 1/2 of its 20+ storey office lifts broke down when the remaining 1/2 were being modernised), where many long-distance coaches terminate at, while our long-distance train station (Woodlands Train Checkpoint) is even further from downtown than Changi Airport & I heard connecting buses to there from the nearest train station sometimes skip it due to congestion from the nearby Woodlands Checkpoint

My wife and I just returned from 2 weeks in Singapore. During that time we met the nicest people, felt safe beyond reproach, and enjoyed the differences between many cultures that all acted as one. I absolutely loved the pragmatic approach to crime and rules. They applied to everyone equally and therefore people adhered to them. I saw multiple instances of their military as there were a number of flyby's with Jets, attack helicopters, and even large scale chinooks to transport personnel. The police were nowhere to be seen except when necessary as there are cameras EVERYWHERE. One of the greatest things is I felt safe at all times and was therefore able to explore all that Singapore had to offer, because Singapore let its community know they were in charge. Its the first time in years I did not have to have my "Head on a Swivel" to look for exits, bad actors, or dynamic circumstances. Yes, I was raised in a LEO and military family and have trained in martial arts over 45 years so its in my nature.

As a Singaporean, I can tell you that we are trained to defend against minimum 3x the opposition force no matter what service we're in, be it army, air force or navy. Whenever we are given training exercises, we are always given disgusting odds and handicaps during those exercises. And yes, we defend first but we make sure to give maximum pain for any invaders. That's why we're pragmatic. I remember clearly my days in the military and the one single thing my company of men share is we don't defend our country. We defend the families of our battalion men who live and work in Singapore. Because if we don't defend them, then who will. That shows you how pragmatic we are.

Plus the soldiers of this front were exactly the best trained either, they were hastily assembled due to the fact that they thought the Japanese wouldn't dare flank them the way they did, and they weren't just British, they were British, Indians and Australians, 73% of the 5000+ casualties were our Aussie brethren, lads from the land down under, even though they made up only about 13% of the forces in the fighting. Plus, they surrendered 80,000 of them thinking that the Japanese would treat the POWs humanely and return them at the end of the war intact, thought this way they were saving the lives of their men since their last example was from the Russo-Japanese war where the Japanese treated the Russian POWs extremely well (contrasting what was happening in China but the British weren't exactly knowing the situation there. )

Thank you for a very interesting outside-in perspective of my country. As a proud Singaporean myself, I think your account is very accurate. I am already almost 50 years old. Both my father (who is in his 70s) and I have served in our conscript military called National Service, for two and a half years full-time followed by more than a decade of reservist duties, where we go back for in-camp training annually for 2 to 3 weeks each time. In a few short years, my son will also be serving his National Service to become a soldier. I served my full-time National Service in the 1990s and I completed my reservist obligations about a decade ago. Over this span of time, I could see for myself how strong our military was growing, even from my small and humble position as an enlisted soldier. I was trained on the M16 Vietnam war era rifle during my full-time service. During my reservist training, we were all upgraded to the SAR-21 - a much more accurate weapon in my opinion. I was also in the armour battalions and during my time, we used the AMX-13 and M113 vehicles. Look at the SAF Armour today! Leopard 2s, Hunter AFVs etc. Amazing platforms. Some external observers wrongly assume that only the active battalions (i.e. the men in the professional forces plus full-time NS) can fight. But they are wrong. I have seen for myself how capable the reserve units are. In fact, sometimes during reservist training, we are pitted against the full-time forces (younger and physically fitter) but they don't always win!

@@wittysatan3821 Exactly...I'm one of the few in the minority who wish for reunification legit every day, every year...it sucks to see two Koreas...like why can't we also unify like how East and West Germany did. But I guess it's not easy and it's a different situation for Korean peninsula. And yes for sure! Everything in South Korea is still cheaper than things in Japan BUT it's becoming more expensive to buy houses, cars and even food. So much has changed since just 5 years ago.

Singapore airforce nearly 100% is american equipment. Singapore navy is multinational equipment from French stealth frigate, Swedish minehunting vessel, German Uboat ,harpoon missiles, Israel Barak anti air missiles, Italian Oto melera 76mm gun, to US torpedoes. Army is German leopard MBT, Singapore developed APV, SAR21 singapore own assault rifles, german bridging vehicle to name a few. Btw, there is US naval depot in Singapore few ppl know about. Singapore received "active" help from Israel and Taiwan to build and train our defence forces in our early days of independence. We also received "passive" help from New Zealand who agreed to station a battalion of NZ soldiers in Singapore. 1RNZIR was in Singapore until 1989. The purpose of this small number of NZ soldiers in Singapore is to commit the bigger countries of Australia and United States under the ANZUS defence treaty of the 3 countries in case Singapore (and NZ soldiers) are attacked. Yes, young Singaporeans today need to appreciate that their present security and prosperity are due to much help from several good friends and the sacrifices of many earlier NSMen.

Think sometimes Singapore was opportunistic e.g. being the 1st to establish ties with the USA in the 1960s onwards while its neighbours were more adverse to it due to the Vietnam war, concerns about foreign culture influence etc., which helped established Singapore as the USA"s most significant ally in the SE Asia region

Very good documentary from VisualPolitik. Our Military Service is like our right of passage for every Singaporean Male. It starts at the age of 18 and we serve 2 years (previously 2 and a half years) before we are Operationally Ready. (ORD) This applies not only to the Military but also to our brothers in the Police Force and the SCDF. The good thing about National Service is that most 18 year olds come out of it as more mature and they appreciate the usual things they take for granted. It also binds them into a sense of belonging to some greater and giving them a purpose to defend something they care about.

To add, some portion of the national service personnels are part of the home team units (Police, SPF; fire fighting and medical, SCDF) There are units within the different "departments" where it's fully manned by NSF and reservist. SCDF is also the designated maintainer for the MRT bomb shelters dotted around the island as an embedded shelter in an otherwise peacetime public transit station, which also saw reservist units being activated from time to time to check the facility and other works

hehe, why don't you join the Commandos instead. If you didn't get selected or chosen to go for the interview, you can always go BMTC and voice out your opinion to join the Guards. I heard Guards conduct mono intakes (at times) as well (join the guards directly without having to go through BMTC in Tekong). You can try letting the medical officers (Doctors) know during the standard medical check ups that are done before the whole process of NS, though I'm not sure how effective it will be (can't 100% say it helps or it doesn't).

Well researched and presented. One thing to note is the mission statement of SAF: "The mission of Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces is to enhance Singapore's peace and security through deterrence and diplomacy, and should these fail, to secure a swift and decisive victory over the aggressor." Therefore, to look at Singapore's military is only part of the equation for our national security. Diplomacy and have healthy relationships with our neighbours is, and will always be our primary defence. But should diplomacy fail, we stand ready to make the aggressors bleed for every move they make against our home. On 9 August 1991, Malaysia and Indonesia conducted a joint airborne operation in Southern Johor, 20km from our borders. Live firing was also part of that joint operation. On a day that Singapore celebrated it's 26th birthday, the first National Day for Goh Chok Tong in the capacity as Prime Minister. An operation that was named "Pukul Habis" or "Total Wipeout". In response, SAF ordered an open mobilisation, reservist battalions were brought up to force, live ammunition distributed, armour and artillery deployed in key locations. Thankfully, no shots were fired across the border. But it showed the world how prepared Singapore is to address all perceived threats to our sovereignty.
