As a Sri Lankan, we borrowed too much and wasted it on unnecessary imports, imported food rather growing, so many subsidies, massive public sector and pensions. Sadly we won’t be able to pay any local and international debt. Politicians and public servants stole some money but we public are mostly to blame keep on voting the corrupt.

Well , sri lanka works on majoritism and I was shocked when I heard about Sri Lanka crisis . I mean , as a neighbour and as an Indian we still have internal disputes and tensions due to diversity but don't understand the story of sri Lanka . Why they have become a failure in the end ? , politics become major reason for their failure. And I don't think they are going to be fine any soon now .

This is a great work of journalism, an impartial investigation of the root causes of the issues and also searching for real solutions. While the debts from Chinese was mainly for infrastructure, (some were necessary, while others were white elephants) where did the funds from the International Bonds go ? There is nothing to show for the $12.5 billion. Wasted by idiotic politicians elected by even more idiotic people. Now we all pay the price of idiocy. The external debts of $44 billion is hopelessly unrealistic to be repaid. As for the International Bonds, 30% haircut or nothing. Those International Bonds should not have been issued in the first place. From being the third richest country in Asia at Independence we have become the sick man of Asia during 75 years of so-called democracy.

guia, It was NOT a great work of journalism, as it didn't even cover one of the main problems. The Sri Lankan govt. was convinced to go all organic in its farming. That's plain to see. The problem is the public keeps voting in individuals or groups who keep this scheme going, vs someone trying to do real reform. Creating a fertilizer ban which tanks 40% of the rice crops in one hand... and then offering subsidies that cost's over half their government's budget doesn't make sense (except for the rice farmers who get paid twice... once by the gov't, and then a second time by the public on inflated rice prices).

Convenient to blame China while ignoring how others including IMF and World Bank operate
@temp1851
@temp1851 Жыл бұрын
@@rajnikantsharma Chinese loan comes with the following problems which is not associated with IMF or World Bank loans: 1. It's rate of interest is much higher with a repayment period much lower, basically forcing a debt crisis, unless the nation has strong economic growth. 2. Most places where Chinese invest do not have such economic backbone to such such loans, hence it it's termed as debt trap. When IMF or World Bank loans to such nation, it comes with a sustainable plan to open up their economy, not push them to a debt crisis. 3. IMF/World Bank loans are transparent. Everything can be found on papers and can be openly discussed (both the good and bad). Chinese loans are not. Ask any Pakistani how much pakistan owes to the Chinese and you will get dubious answer. 4. No other nation uses debt as an instrument to take over sovereign assets of another nation (like what Chinese did to hambantota). Surely IMF or World Bank never does that and I have never heard of any western nation in the w1st century doing this. This only reminds me of the colonial period where britishers used to take over sovereign indian kingdoms in the name of taxation. If after knowing all this, you still support China, you are nothing but an wumao.

China's debt composition in Sri Lanka moved from 0.3 percent to 16 percent between 2000 and 2016. By the end of 2022, China's debt stock in Sri Lanka had reached some US$7.3 billion, amounting to 19.6 percent of Colombo's public external debt. China knew that Sri Lanka will fail to service the terms but still loaned the money. Official data from Sri Lanka's Finance Ministry shows China accounting for only about 10% of the country's $35.1 billion in external debt at the end of April 2021. This figure covers only government-to-government. A report released by Sri Lankan economists, based on information requested from the Finance Ministry, provides a better picture. Looking at public and publicly guaranteed debt -- which includes commercial lending to the government and loans to Sri Lankan state-owned enterprises the China's share totaled 20% at the end of 2020 China lended despite knowing Sri Lanka cannot service the debt. Between 2000 and 2020, it extended close to $12 billion in loans to the Sri Lankan government, largely for a slate of major infrastructure projects that turned into white elephants - including a costly port facility in the Rajapaksas’ hometown of Hambantota, which was effectively ceded to Chinese control half a decade ago after Sri Lankan authorities recognized they could no longer pay off the loans. So primarily Sri Lankan political party and government are to be blamed. But China is also partially responsible.

We suffered also like this in the Philippines, BUT, not in this kind of MAGNITUDE, it was in the 1980s, because of the political turmoil, and instability, but, LUCKILY, we escaped that economic woes, lucky for the Philippines, our economic managers handled the situation prudently, slowly, paying our DEBTs to the IMF-WB. In the 2000 to 2010, we slowly PAID of our debts to the WB-IMF, once we finished paying out, GMA kicked out the WB-IMF in the Philippines. Now, as we learned from that PAINFUL lessons in the 1980s, our Legislative Body have putting a BUDGET every year, to PAID our Foreign Debts, luckily for the Philippines now, our DEBT is more on LOCAL banks which is 70%, while Foreign debt is 30% only, and the Philippines right now is sitting in a MASSIVE Foreign Exchange Reserves of 120 Billion USD.

A lot of patriotism in the economic discussion leads to ignorance. If you are indebted to a foreign creditor and cannot pay the debt, then you and the creditor share the same fate, but if you are indebted to the domestic market from domestic banks, then you are in a bigger problem. Why? Well, because the bank borrowed money from the local population that keeps it in the bank. Money did not fall from the sky. In that case the whole economy goes down. Not only the state, but the population that was left without their money

the fact that china literally lent 200% (2% vs 20%~) than the IMF is astounding alone. Literally China basically owns Sri Lanka . As a poor person, it really confuses me when new ways of life come out and people blend trends for why their business fails during times of change. Like, were you just lazily profiting off of basic flow of humans, or was it really a knack for anticipating human trends and finding a marketable niche? Because I don't understand how you stop reselling other peoples things because people stopped walking by your store. The producers didn't stop manufacturing? You could've been better business men actually paying attention and then maybe anticipate a new thing to resell? Not stick with overhead costs and no business -.-

For the common man in the streets, there are laws and regulations to ensure that banks and other financial institutions do not lend to people who can't afford the loan and that the loan is used for the stated purpose. Only illegal money lenders tout loans to those who can't afford it and not caring what it is used for. At the state level, one needs to ask why loan was allowed to be made to build a port that is not commercial feasible. If responsible lending guidelines were followed, such a loan would not have been allowed.

The “debt-trap” theory is concocted by Brahma Chellaney, an Indian geopolitical strategist. The “debt-trap” theory is concocted by Indians, and popularized by Americans. They concoct this theory to demonize China, Chinese and BRI projects/loans. India, US, along with EU, fear losing their control over other countries which may result from these projects. Such fears are based on their selfish and geopolitical interests. However, people from all over the world, especially from developing countries have acknowledged the needs and the actual benefits of these projects/loans. They know from their first-hand experience that there is no debt-trap. Academics and researchers have reviewed these projects, and have debunked the debt-trap theory.

@@preanand1938 It looks like you were not paying attention. If you charge a higher interest rate, because of the risk factor involved in lending to someone or something, it means that you accept the possibility of default, and that you give up full recovery. You make up for your losses with the higher interest rate that you are charging others. If you are not willing to give up full recovery, and your entire amount lent is recovered, why are you charging the higher rate in the first place? You should be charging what you charge others, counting them as lower risk borrowers; whenever you make full recovery, your borrower is automatically a safe borrower, and represents a low or non-existent risk, and deserves a lower interest rate.

They are *construction debt.* - The loans must have *collateral, such as mines, seaports, etc. - Most BRI projects China developed are useless but may be useful for *the Chinese military.* - Chinese workers, mostly *men unable to marry* in China, are transported to Sri Lanka for BRI projects. - China took the Hambantota seaport for *99 years* as Sri Lanka's unable to pay. - unable to pay, Sri Lanka asked lenders for renegotiation.
