Can’t live on land? No sweat. For the residents of the unique community of the Long Xuyen floating village in An Giang province, the river provides.
From seasonal fish and shrimp fished right outside their boat houses, to river plants growing wild and abundant along the banks, this rich bounty is never in short supply. Humble fermented fish pastes give full-bodied flavour to a nutritious hotpot full of river catch, and a beautiful harvest of wild neem plants constitute the tart base of an incredible salad.
The people of Long Xuyen are proof that life on the river is just as good as life on land.

The neem leaves salad is called "Sầu đau" in Vietnamese which literally means Sorrow. This name is very meaningful, it also describes the taste of the dish very well. At first, it tasted bitter, but then after it became sweet. The same for Sorrow, at first it's really bad and painful, but once you get over it, the sweetness comes.

It's actually "sầu đâu", meaning more like "where's the sorrow" but that's one romantic way to think about it. Just like durian in Vietnamese is "sầu riêng" which means "lonely sorrow" but nahh it stems from how du-rian is said

One thing I love about Vietnam’s countryside is you can literally walk to your small garden, front of your neighbor’s house, sidewalks, rice fields, etc and you pretty much has green in your meal Also, hot pot in Vietnam is mostly cooked so that your family eat ton of vegetable. So don’t be surprised when you are invited to a family hot pot and see 3-4 big ass bowl of all kinds of vegetables. You have to eat hot pot that way since the soup are quite salty, spicy or sour but pairing it with green dilutes the soup, thus making it easier to eat. Moreover, vitamins and minerals are hea lth-beneficial Ah and also the vegetable picked for hot pot is normally sweet, bitter or blant. No herbs though, of course.

Regarding water for cooking and drinking, what I usually see people living offgrid in the Mekong Delta use is bottled water as you can see in the corner at 14:43. It costs about 50 cent per 20l jar. For people living on boat, it is true that they use river water for non-consumption purpose and discharge to the same river, it is not good at all for sure. However, I think we should also keep mind that it is flowing (not static) water and it is the mighty Mekong River, the issue could be mitigated a little bit. I know for washing dishes, some may use clean water to rinse at the end to finish. At least now they can afford those water jar, in the past they had to use river water for cooking or better situation is to collect rain water- but rain does not happen whole year round.

Yeah, except in the first world we have access to clean drinking water, food that’s well regulated and inspected, free of parasites, and we have laws preventing the sale and distribution of toxic additives, including a ban on sales of endangered and exotic animals for food. Our laws protect us from a lot of environmental hazards. I do agree, though, that people in West don’t always make good choices about food and nutrition. I suppose we could blame it on capitalism, but we are all ultimately responsible for what we eat.

You eat a lot of fresh mints with this dish and it’s the eggplants 🍆 that make this dish famous. Living by the river, the river provides things they can pick and live on like the flowers, water Lillie’s and water spinach etc. it’s all free if you know what to look for and how to cook it.

This show doesn't sit very well with me. These people, though poor, are certainly not considered "slum dwellers" and their food "slum food" by any standards. The implications is rather insulting. I don't think they fit the definition of a "Slum dweller." They live on boats, they have businesses, earn a living, eat well and have a decent lives. They aren't not destitute. Every dish they cook, are well made, full of healthy and delicious ingredients and tradition. Destitute people do not think like this.

this is poverty in vietnam, what im proud of our culture is we are self sufficient, we find a way to keep us alive from our surroundings. it's in our blood to cultivate. we look after people around us. I came from one of the poorest provinces in vietnam and we are never hungry, we manage to grow vegs and raise animals. though we sell most of them and eat 1-2 chickens a year. when storms come, my uncles used to hold the banana trees so it doesnt fall down. when i watch videos of people eating pag pag or suffer in poverty in the phillipines, i cant help but hope someone can teach them how to fish, grow vegs, and look after your neighbours. all of those trash piles can be clean and the surface can be used for gardening. in vietnam we grow on the ground and grow creepers on top.

No. They buy a 19 liter water bottle for 2 dollars to drink and also buy domestic water on the mainland for cooking (In VN, water very cheap).

Translation tried 1% as hard as the people here try to get by. It follows neither the pattern of speech nor the details being spoken. I guess only the gist got left in like the dissolved fermented fish, though nary will it be as great.

Right on the water source they use for daily washing; few can afford portable water.

If some of this food was being made and served in a restaurant in New York city, it would be easily $30-$50+ each for a meal. I'd be willing to bet that if more families from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, etc lived in NYC, there would not be a rat problem. Tell them all you can eat. Slumfood Billionaires would be popping up. I know these people are only living according to what their situation is but, the bathroom should be emptied into a large drum and disposed of on land. How can one show you the bathroom with no bottom and the river water, then go do dishes right out side. And have the mindset they are clean? Also eating anything from the river that is obviously contaminated by human waste.

Right, or at least, there is a designated place to be their public "restroom" so the wastes would only stay in its vicinity (probably).

The river water is flowing constantly so it’s like a huge toilet bowl that’s always flushing with fresh water. Also the rat people eating are the ones on rice fields, they only eat natural food, not trash.

Dude! We’re not that dumb. Yes, rats are eaten everywhere across Asia, but those mouse are rice field/wild mouse so they eat fruits and meat like every other animals unlike the ones in America that eats garbage and drink contaminated water.

Slum food? Boat homes aren't slums. And what people ate in the video are also casual meals (the salad is even for events) for Vietnamese everywhere in the country. That hotpot is also a dish in restaurants, normally costs over 100k (~5$).

While the food and the people are amazing and the effort to feature them is admirable, just wonder if the people you film know you feature them as living in floating slum? Do they consider themselves slum people?

There are no slum or ghetto in Vietnam because Vietnamese people are clean, intelligent, and non-violent.

I love all those foods ! I was salivating when I was watching g the boiling pot ! I love the idea of living on boat but only if the government can do Sth to manage the waste disposal etc… I think their stomach are very strong ! They washed the fish with the river water (which is quite dirty). Since they discard the soupy detergent water into the river and even discard the fish bone ! I wonder same for human waste ….

@@AN-xs7dw think like this when they use they bathroom, the waste go to the river flow which mean its ok to use the river' water. The think you scare only happen in the water area which don t have any flow or they the last point of the flow. Such as a lake

@@AN-xs7dw No, the boat on the river, not lake. Clean or dirty depends on each person differently. Usually on the boat there will be 1 tank to store clean water for daily life, clean water in Vietnam is very cheap to use freely, the same goes for the internet. If you travel to Vietnam, you will know.

It's very condescending and offensive to call those floating houses a slum. They are not slums, it's just how they live along the river to tend for their fish farms. Please correct this.
