Krabi’s Koh Klang may be a mere eight kilometres away from its affluent mainland and tourist hotspots, but it’s a world away in reality.
Home to multi-generational fishing families, life is simple and money is tight. But they’re still eating well on the bounty that nature gives.
From black crabs captured in traps, to stingrays and giant sea snails in their fishing nets, this exotic catch is brought home and transformed into simple, nourishing dishes with the distinctive flavours of Southern Thai cuisine.
From umami fresh giant snail salads to spicy stingray stir-fries and rich, creamy crab curry, the island’s residents show that when you catch what you eat, the results can turn out to be truly amazing.

This series is extremely underrated. It needs to be talked about more because not only it covers the cultural aspect of obscure province around Asia, it also covers the social aspect and bringing awareness of the reality of how this part of the world lives. I just hope they get at least a good payment out of this and not just being exploited for content

Love this! These people are so lovely. They value family, hard work, living simple, and enjoy their life. It did break my heart to see the first couple and how the man worked in tourism and how he missed it so much. He was so very kind and sweet. I really loved him and his wife.

They all look incredible and like the taste is to die for! In any "cosmopolitan" city in the world, any of the dishes made in this video would be priced at at least $25-$30 USD++ - and that's a conservative spectrum, given what restauranteurs are happy to charge these days. Blame it on labour costs or even modern day greed... but to put things into perspective, $30 USD converts to about $1000+ THB. You would be able to purchase at the very least, 20kgs of rice for that amount in Koh Klang. Certainly food for thought.

I was really shocked when they took 30 years to pay off the boat, maybe not 1,500 Baht per month for 30 years, that amount can buy you a Huge Double deck fishing boat in Thailand 🇹🇭

Why use the pejorative term slum? These are kampongs/villages with every day people living simple lives, finding their happiness and satisfaction wherever they can. They value family, relationships, excellent food, serving others and hard work. I admire them ☺️

Tbh I think it is good to use the word and show something good because it changes how people think when they hear the word slum. Don't get me wrong, there are dangerous places everywhere, but when people call an area a slum they imagine some hellish pit even though communities like the ones shown tend to exist in nearly all of them. Even if they are not friendly to outsiders or just dangerous overall.

I'm thai and I can tell you that koh klang is not slum. It's the way people living there. Their foods in this video are expensive if they're in restuarant. Actually they have better live than people living in slum in big city. Atleast they eat expensive foods almost every day. Koh klang also has many restuarant at one side of island. People usually take a boat ride about 5 min from mainland to eat fresh seafood at restuarants in koh klang.

Compared to people's daily diet that goes for processed food or highly glucose food, this so-called slum food is way more healthy-along with its delicious taste.

The subtitles say "business was not good" But in her words she actually says that the "business did not turn a profit". The preparation was very precise and her methodology was very informed. It's a shame that the lady preparing the dish found running food service in that area was not financially viable as she certainly has the talent and instinct to create outstanding food!

That crab curry looks delicious esp with freshly grated coconut milk. So exhausting thing to do. We used to eat that in our hometown. Now you cant find a good curry dish. Most people nowadays used factory packed coconut paste. Convenient but tasteless. The 2nd lady though, i think she has not achieved the grandma lvl of cooking yet, after putting the garlic accidentally in not yet properly heated frying oil @11:53. You can get scolded for that. 😅. Her fresh catch meal looks mouth-watering though.

It's Southern Thai language. They use different vocabs from the Central Thai (the Bangkok dialect), with completely different accents and intonations. As a Bangkokian, I can only understand about 60-70% of what they said in the video and had to read the English subtitles. 😂

Slum? Is there something I'm not understanding? These individuals have more wealth than the majority of people in Thailand. The meal they are preparing is typically only available at high-end restaurants. It's virtually impossible to purchase property on that island since it's considered priceless. In today's world, misconceptions and misunderstandings about various issues and events are rampant. One such misunderstanding was captured in a video in which an individual visits a community that was referred to as a "slum." The individual, upon visiting the community, expressed surprise at the living conditions and the apparent wealth of the residents. The person in the video assumed that a "slum" was only meant to be associated with poverty and squalor. However, this assumption is incorrect and can be harmful.
