22:13 The Golden Triangle, notorious for opium production, has a new drug of choice - methamphetamine. The Shan State in Myanmar is now believed to be the world's leading source of the contraband.
In 2021, over 1 billion meth pills were seized in East and Southeast Asia, much of it originating from this part of Indochina. From Myanmar, the synthetic drugs flow across the porous border into Thailand, to be smuggled to other parts of the world.
With the pandemic all but over, the drug trade is expected to pick up with increasing demand. Meanwhile, Thailand grapples with the meth pills that stay in its borders, as drug use climbs among its citizens.
Thailand's narcotics bureau has said, that "addressing the methamphetamine situation is a top priority for the Government of Thailand", even as authorities enact new laws to clamp down on drugs. Why has meth become so widespread in this region? And what impact will it have on Thai society?

Everyone has an addiction... some are addicted to coffee, some to tea, some to brandy before bed, some to watching soup operas constantly... addiction should not be a reason for selective incarceration or execution. What we need urgently is balance... your body produces these chemicals, some are fortunate that their mental state allows it naturally. Many can't because of various reasons. Hence they seek relief through medication, which has led more than you can imagine to addiction. Meth aka ice & fentanyl or opioids are the consequence of criminalising Marijuana aka Cannabis aka Ganja and of course psilocybin mushrooms... Once these were unavailable legally in a safe environment, the people who sought relief, shifted to synthetics which were able to be flushed out of the system within 3 days(cannabis takes up to 30 days). This drove criminal organisations to develop more and more addictive stimulants... and they sought to brand it as cool and social. Think about the situation with extacy. Ice was sought for people who needed to work more hours. A consequence of this unyielding drive for economic growth. There are still many who've drunk the coolaid and believe that all & any mind altering stimulant should immediate result in the death penalty. Thankfully Thailand has shifted. Hopefully More will realise this before fentanyl and ice destroy more lives, even here in Singapore. Yes, fentanyl is here...

I live in Thailand and what you don't emphasise in this video is that the Thai police are the main problem, as they are the drug importers and sellers of all drugs in Thailand 100%. They say the drugs come from Myanmar and Laos and yes they do, but all drugs imports are controlled by the Thai police and the Thai government.

When there is a major "drug" issue in a culture the question should not be "how to stop this?" but instead "how can we improve their LIFE so they do not seek escape and emotional solace through an addiction?". Notice that ALL the negative drug issues and impacts increase exponentially in relation to poverty. Wealthy people go to a Psychiatrist and get legal "drugs" from their pharmacy dealer. Instead of trying to eradicate the only outlet some people have for mental health-expand the opportunities through mental health programs. I live in Thailand and there are few options to get mental health assistance for the average Thai. Notice there was NO options offered for breaking addiction other than religious aestheticism which is really not an "option"-just another addiction to a delusion.

As someone who is quite well-versed on this topic and the region in general, imo this is an impossible trade to eradicate. It requires the cooperation of locals, multiple authorities(most which dislike each other) from numerous countries and most importantly, a reduction in the demand for the drug especially from western countries.

As long as the root causes of drug addiction aren't tackled, it will get only worse. They may be social, economical, psychological, political, medical (Fentanyl in the USA) and neurological, and most of the time a combination of all above. Figure the life of a typical Thai person: No social security, no health insurance, no pension, no jobs paid well enough for a decent living, no perspective in life: A breeding ground for addiction, now comes along a drug which is 5 Baht per pill, that's about 0.1 USD a pill. No surprise it's becoming pandemic. Even the poor can afford the 10 - 20 pills a day for heavy addiction. It's really really big business. Global problem. As long as we are in denial of the root causes, it won't get better. As the Thai sex worker said, all seeking happiness, they don't find in their troublesome lives... Like always, there are some who profit greatly, and they aren't shady dealers, but wealthy business people, sometimes very well connected. In case of Shan state: Even if governments manage the movement of precursor drugs, i am sure, they will start to produce them inside Shan state. So, no peace in Myanmar means no end of drug trade in South-East Asia.

I went to that temple many years ago, it was truly moving, not just the harshness of the treatment but the compassion that the patients were shown. Many people go to visit there to support the temple. The emetic concoction they the patients are given actually has a purpose: given the violent retching that they experience, the severe muscular exertions when vomiting, release endorphins which in turn help to relieve withdrawal symptoms. A TV film was made of this place some years ago. I wasn't allowed to photograph any of the patients or proceedings, but I have kept a photo of a bronze Buddha statue there.

This excellent report could have been done 20 to 25 years ago exactly the same way, before the war on drugs in 2003. History repeats itself, and in this case in a possibly much escalated way. The prices reported for meth now are much lower than back then even. Between the years of 1997 and 2002 Thai authorities talked a lot, but basically did nothing to combat the spread of meth, especially not in changing the root causes - economic problems and social disruption because of the 1997 crisis, which changed the meth user landscape from enabling to work or study hard to escaping a dire reality. For some years, until the political crisis worsened, the drug war with between 1000 and 1500 extrajudicial killings from February until April 2003 changed the landscape. Apart from the brutality of the killings (i still vivildy remember them, as well as the desperation that preceeded it, as i covered both with my camera), some positive developments took place as well - for the first time a distinction between users and pushers was made, which now, according to this law, is pulled back again, and treatment was widely available, such as methadone programs for heroin addicts. Some of it back the was far from perfect, but it was a start. What however massively changed was that the then elected government pushed masive funds into the then almost drug free communities, and changed the perspective of many ordinary Thais into a more positive outlook on life. The 2006 military coup, the 2008 judicial coup, and the subsequent political crisis has however infuenced Thai domestic politics to the worse. On the law enforcement and intel level sources were withdrawn from drug enforcement to politics, and Thai people got more and more depressed due to the constant overthrows of their elected governments (by the forces that still govern the country). I guess Covid and the resulting impoverishment of so many Thais created a similar atmosphere as after the 1997 econmic crisis. I fear that sooner or later it will all lead up to another war against drugs, and again, as it was back then, with general societal approval of a people that have seen everything else failing.

If you are someone who hasn't been afflicted with addiction then consider yourself extra blessed..yes you may have other demons to contend with but if addiction isn't one of your demons then you are lucky for it is a demon with an insatiable hunger, it draws you in like a moth to a flame and keeps you in it's grips like a Venus fly trap and should you be fortunate to escape it's clutches and break free from whatever you are addicted to you indeed are a chosen soul. This demon always stands by the door as it knows we are only ONE decision away from welcoming it back in and here's the thing everytime we welcome it back in the more imboldened it gets in refusing to leave as it's constantly waiting by the door, coming back in, waiting by the door, coming back in, it thinks to itself to hell with that I'm sitting right here! So it takes even more effort each time to evict it..but even though it waits by the door the more we say no to welcoming it back in the easier and easier saying no becomes. Having said all that, if we don't deal with the why behind the what, why we do the thing we do to cope, go for the root and rip that up rather than just chopping off the branches which is in essence a sticking plaster method of survival then we will never heal!..it's not easy but that wound needs to become a scab and that scab needs to become a scar and that scar a story if we are ever going to overcome the thing we are addicted to. God bless you all.

Happiness itself is fake to begin with, its just a idea thats sold to us by government, TV, religion. The end result is "evolution", natural selection, survival of the fittest, to those who procreate and survive the most. To fill the empty void of death/depression/sadness/negativity we all fear, we use drugs to take away those thoughts; no one is created equal, or the human brain, as everyone is different, and everyone will see reality differently. artificial happiness.= drugs = religions= food= relationships = sex and other things, find something that provides thats it, and keep to yourself without harming others and enjoy life.

In that phrase, the pursuit of happiness, it means property+more, unalienable rights, nobody to govern but yourself. It comes from the Virginia Declaration of Rights by Thomas Jefferson. We are supposed to be happy because we are totally free on our own land. Also, this statement that meth is artificial is not completely true. Amohetamine is similar to Khat/cathinone, and by replacing a single Oxygen with a Hydrogen in ephedrine (from the ephedra plant) you get methamphetamine. It is very nearly natural. And there are 2 distinct forms: the levo and dextro isomers, which are very different, and it is very poor communications not to distinguish between the 2. Most street meth is d-meth, but the pharmaceutical form is l-meth.

Ergo, these border town folk know everything. A stranger would be smelt out by them from 3 miles away. So either they profit from it, are a part of it, or are it; to explain the drug trade to move so freely among them and theirs.

Depiration brings greed in every people, whether they be of different ages, status, or position. Because of the nature of drugs, and it's addictive indulgence, nothing remains the same. Relationships gets destroyed, and so does a nation because of it's pandemic as a consequence. Hence, it's better to sentence capital punishment as a result of drug trafficking. Though it may lead to moral issues, but that's the price to be paid, for better future.

I just passed the 50 year marker last December and what is still as fresh as ever is the fact that behind almost Everything of significance there is some unbelievably dystopic horrible truth. Though in this particular situation I can't imagine that mentioning this here in the documentary would serve any good in any way. Indeed it would expose the initial crimes but in the long term it would only scare away those who are looking to get help. I understand that the only reason Truth exist is to expose lies, I just wish that were enough for all humans to feel that it's not worth the effort and the sacrifice to their own dignity.

Drug enforcement will never work, the tougher the enforcement, the more profitable the game to those who know how to not get caught. Without a drug war, there's too much competition. The big players NEED 3 things to be hugely profitable. Find a product that's in high demand. Make that product illegal. Have governments thin out your competition via high penalties / incarceration rates. We are actually propping these businesses up.

Also, wait until 35yo before trying drugs. At least the coming degradation of your life will be in your 70s. If you start early, you end early. Drugs can be a wonderful part of your life if you know what to expect and don't allow your use to determine when you use. The urge to use is only there trying to talk you into doing it, and if a habit gets built, you're done for. If you see the habit forming, you can control it. Becoming aware of what your habits are frees you from them. Unfortunately, most people don't even know they've been conditioned. This applies to things like religion as well. Habits are everything.

When I traveled north along the myanmar border road 10 years ago by car, kids came out ot the nowhere offering bags of pills for 20 bhat a pill. Now I hear its even got worse. Meth after THC is now legal is Thailands biggest challenge. Now truck loads of meth is coming in often supported by corrupted police and army. Some groups of rebels and tadmadaw now runs even modern factories to produce meth. Some can be seen from the thai border north of Ranong . Mae Sot is another hotspot. It's just a short nightly walk over a shallow river.

Drug traffickers should get harsh penalties but users and addicts need to get help and go to rehab. Putting an addict in prison will not make society safer nor will it reform the addict it will make the addict worse by the trauma they will get in prison and becoming a bigger criminal when they leave especially if the prison lacks resources and services for the prisoners to gain meaningful skills to renter society.
