By 2045, Indonesia could harness one of the world’s most controversial energy sources - nuclear power. A New and Renewable Energy Bill, that is currently tabled in parliament, will make nuclear a key energy pillar, to mitigate climate change.
With three nuclear research reactors already operating in the country, Indonesia has been considering nuclear as a power option for almost seven decades. But despite most of the population supporting the use of nuclear, there are still pockets of opposition, among activists and politicians alike, who fear a nuclear fallout like Fukushima.
Does Indonesia have the required expertise and governance to run nuclear power plants?

Singapore is actually afraid that Indonesia will become a developed country, that's why they make news that scares the public about the dangers of nuclear power plants
@abcddef2112
@abcddef2112 Жыл бұрын
Or they are afraid Indonesia is getting more developed, their superiority complex can't take it. They can't say indonesia is underdeveloped in nuclear capacity since they have to show the operating reactor, can singapore even produce samarium? It is clear, they even talk offtopic alot about other renewable but failed to mention Indonesia is 2nd biggest geothermal energy producer in the world. Well bear in mind this is Singaporean government propaganda.

Why are you jealous of Singapore? Why are they afraid of Indonesia if Indonesia become a develop nation? They don't care at all. Why do quite a lot of Indonesians get easily suspicious and defensive when others from outside the country make reports or documentary about Indonesia, even though they're not about negative things? Indonesians have too much BAPER.

Indonesia already have Nuclear program since President Sukarno's 1954 with a proofing power reactor done in 1987 and BATAN already enriching and exporting it for radiology currently, so it's just a matter of political will. Indonesia have zero tectonic fault line in Kalimantan and Riau Islands, so it is normal that Singapore may finds it upsetting as that region share the same sea.

Balik balik Malaysia yang kamu tuduh, negara kamu gagal kelola petrol himgga beli dari Singapura, yang dibenci Malaysia. Bukan Malaysia yang tetapkan harga minyak dunia mahupun minyak sawit. Tetapi trader dunia. Kalau kami yang tetapkan harga maka pasti kami mahu harga petrol dan sawit mahal sentiasa. Tetapi tidak, jika pasaran dunia harganya rendah, kami pun terimpak sama. Mahu pakai nukleur silakan, bukan masalah nukleur yang ditakuti, masalah safety. Jepun saja gagal jaga reaktor nukleur mereka. Sedangkan mereka itu teliti orangnya. Sebenarnya masalah tenaga bukan masalah jiran tetangga. I get the unmitigated tone of self interest CNA is pitching SIngapore foreign policy and fears of nuclear accidents. More to the point, Singapore supplies refined petroleum products to Indonesia and has no interest in a energy independent Indonesia. Much of Indonesian wealth is also in Singapore and much of that from wanton destruction of rainforests for palm oil plantations. The SIngapore based Asian Pulp and Paper being chief in that regard.. The nuclear FUD just is too hypocritical coming from 99% fossil fuel dependent Singapore with the bling bling lifestyle which Indonesians are burning Kerosene lamps. Please stop.

Indonesian nuclear priority definitely go up after AUKUS. Even if Indonesia did not take France offer of nuclear subs (apparently not violation on NPT), it definitely will want to invest in nuclear. People seemed suprise Indonesia had nuclear reactor. Why CNA did not talk about one of the projest that is underway by thorcon, they have been hiring some veterans from Oak Ridge, BATAN and SINAP. Also agreements with PAL, Empresarios Agrupados, ministry of defense and energy as well BRIN. Bob Effendi is basically the proponent of that bill you talked about.

The content of this report is a bit misleading. As far as i know, Indonesia is pursuing different kind of nuclear technology for it's power plant to replace coal-based. Much more safer then conventional nuclear. it's the MSR (Molten Salt Reactor) technology with the main source is Thorium not uranium and it would be built in a ship. it would suitable since Indonesia has so many islands and it has very large Thorium deposit in Sumatera island. It's a join project with US based company called Thorcon since 2015

As a Indonesian, I'm totally support nuclear project, simply cz we are a huge country, the 4th most populous country, and one of economic power, is a necessity for us to learn advanced technology. And there is one thing you missing out in this documentary video, That is BAPETEN. You cannot interviewd BATAN (BRIN), bcz they are operator. Nuclear power is great if it can be developed, applied and distributed properly. Indonesia, like many other Southeast Asian countries, is known to have deep-seething corruption when it comes to government projects, but I hope the process of development can be overseen by a veteran third-party, several engineers (maybe even foreign) whom have extensive experience in building and maintaining nuclear reactors. I hope the government spares no expense in hiring and assigning the right people for the job, and really increasing the standards of safety when it comes to maintaining nuclear reactors. Despite advances in nuclear safety technology, a lot of the responsibility is held on the operators therefore they must be truly up to the task. Indonesia cannot afford any form of nuclear disasters, even if plants are in remote locations, due to the intense population density.

Thank God again, thank God, thorium is very abundant in the nature of the Motherland of the Republic of Indonesia, it has not even been used by western countries due to its scarcity. Moreover, it was informed that Lapindo mud is a high grade mud of rare earth metals. Another name for thorium is a green nuclear energy source. Because the western world is afraid of the revival of Indonesia's energy sources with thorium, they always prevent it with the slogan prohibiting nuclear development on the grounds that they are wary of making nuclear bombs. Why is the western world afraid of Indonesia going forward with Thorium energy? Because nuclear thorium is different from their nuclear source which is made of uranium, it is even estimated that Thorium mine reserves are 4 times larger than Uranium on this Mother Earth, this amount is abundant. Rare earth metals are rare, because they are located deep in the ground, the excavation costs are very expensive. Unlike in Indonesia, Lapindo mud contains a lot of rare earth metals, it comes out by itself continuously, so the term is just taking it from the ground, without drilling costs. The question is what is the difference between uranium and thorium-based nuclear materials? Thorium is the fuel that has the densest energy density. As a result, 1 ton of thorium which is only the size of a basketball can be used as fuel for a 1,000 MW power plant for 1 year. Compare with uranium: thorium = 200: 1, meaning that the power of 200 grams of uranium is proportional to the power of 1gram of thorium, Very Fantastic! , or comparable to the thermal energy of coal which requires 3.5 tons. - and what is more encouraging is that Indonesia has thorium reserves for 1,000 years. (This does not include Lapindo mud). Radiation waste: If the waste of 250 tons of uranium can reach 35 tons, uranium waste that still contains radioactive tens to hundreds of years. Compared to the waste of 1 tonne of thorium, he said it was only 30 grams. “In 10 years the thorium waste also no longer contains radioactive reactions. thorium must contain oxygen, and other elements that form minerals with phosphate (P) to become monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th)PO4. “So monazite consists of several rare earth element minerals, and thorium is included in it. It is very good that cooperation with Russia is further enhanced, the roadmap for development of bilateral cooperation in the sphere of nuclear fuel cycle between Rosatom fuel compant TVEL and Batam is very good. PT Timah Tbk (TINS) is ready to provide raw materials for the Thorium Power Plant (PLTT). The provision of this raw material is to supply Thorcon International Pte, Ltd who want to build a PLTT in the country. How to ? Simple Process of Extracting Ultra Pure Thorium from Rare Earth ores: Thorium is an important related element in rare earth ores and is also an important nuclear fuel. The most efficient method of recovering it from rare earth sulfuric acid solution is by solvent extraction with the primary amine extractant N1923. TBP is a traditional extractant for further purification of the extracted thorium. However there are some problems with TBP such as high water solubility and complicated extraction mechanism. Several extraction systems have been developed to overcome this difficulty. Process for recovering and purifying thorium oxide from aqueous solutions containing thorium by liquid-liquid extraction (Christensen and Prater, 1960). The procedure includes: (1) leaching of the ore material with hydrochloric acid; (2) extracting thorium with an organophosphate selected from a group consisting of mono-heptadesyl-orthophosphoric acid, 2,6,8-trimethylnonyl-orthophosphoric acid, 2-monotridesic-orthophosphoric acid, and 5-ethylnonyl-orthophosphoric acid; (3) scrubbing dirt with hydrochloric acid; (4) partial stripping of thorium with sulfuric acid and complete stripping of thorium with alkaline carbonate solution; and (5) precipitating thorium with oxalic acid and calcining it to form thorium oxide. High purity thorium (99.99%) was obtained.( ). Go forward Indonesia, only by leaders who are trustworthy in Pancasila & the 1945 Constitution, be honest, Amen. Semangat !

@@andipejalan3382 nuclear power plants can be built in earthquake prone areas. Fukushima #1 and #2 initially survived the earthquake fully intact. However it has a major design flaw: the backup generators were built below sea level to cut down on expenses. When the tsunami hit, those generators were inundated and were destroyed. That caused the meltdown. Meanwhile, nearby Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, located in one of the most devastated towns in Miyagi, survived fully intact without any problems, because it was designed and built properly.

Geographically speaking, to avoid Fukushima nuclear incidents happening in Indonesia, we need to select some provinces with zero earthquake history, such as Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Bangka Belitung, and Riau Islands; Central Kalimantan is the best candidate to build the nuclear power plant because it has no seismic activities with few minor geological fault lines. Also, the Java Sea in the southern part of Central Kalimantan has a shallow depth (about 46 meters only) without major fault lines. The other three provinces are slightly different, considering the number of fault lines. Through the perspective of history, we need to learn about the nuclear disasters worldwide throughout our nuclear development history, at least from 1954 when humanity ran the nuclear power plant in Obninsk (Russia) for the first time, to lower the risk as close to zero. However, running unsustainable energy (something we have now) is not even better for future generations. Coal-based energy is 'safer' for a short period. But will we run the same method to generate power for the rest of our existence? Showing up (some) bar chart(s) to compare fossil fuels VS renewable energy will help your viewers better understand which ones we must choose for our future, not only for Indonesians but for ASEAN and the whole world. I know that bar charts have been taught to middle school students, not to mention elementary students. However, please keep in mind that nuclear energy is just one of our options to generate power for our country, not the only one. In addition, CNA Insider needs to cover more opinions from the local related institutions, such as BAPETEN (Indonesia's Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency), to have better coverage regarding Indonesia's nuclear development. By the way, only some Indonesian have a positive understanding of nuclear power, as some of us learn from media coverage only, not considering any aspects out there, especially geography and history, to make a better decision. I won't be speaking about the economic aspect as I believe we already know about the effects.

If the government of Indonesia want to convince its people about nuclear power plant, it need to built it in close proximity to or part of Indonesia new capital area (Nusantara). Then, it also needs to deal with the security and safety of the plant. Traditional/technical points such as natural disasters or operational malfunctions maybe already included in the plan & development. But there are more than that. Indonesia also need to plan a funding for nuclear waste management and nuclear disaster prevention and restoration if there's a nuclear disaster happen in the future. so it's a lot of money and brain works, I don't think Indonesia can handle it.

@@dediprakosa7727 I can't guarantee that mining will be stopped. What I can guarantee however, is that solar and Wind, plus the EV craze will drive nickel demand through the roof, unless alternative batteries are found. Today's nickel usage will seem miniscule if Li-ion batteries start being used everywhere as large-scale energy storage. That's why I prefer if we minimize the use of battery reliant power source. The sheer amount of effort that one needs to put to 'clean-up' nickel mining process is enormous, thanks to the large scale of operation alone. I would go so far as to say that making nickel mining 'clean' is much harder than building a modern reliable nuclear plant. to also reply your second question: Today's nuclear power plant designs are much more robust than ever before, thanks to decades of research and case study, and also the drive to overcome the great fear of nuclear in the cultural Zeitgeist. If you are still worrying about failing power plants, I suggest you start researching about past incidents of nuclear power plant catastrophe, see why they happened and what has been done since then to avoid the same incident. Don't preach us about the danger of nukes while you yourself want to build it... Just say you're afraid😅 From NCSS site: "While some existing technologies such as nuclear may not be viable today, we will continue to monitor the progress of nuclear energy technologies and build capabilities to better understand nuclear science and technology."

With what is happening in Ukraine it is obvious that building a Nuclear power station in any country leaves the country with a strategic risk. Further Solar PV with storage is cheaper then nuclear. Fixed-axis PV plus storage $58-178 per MWh to Nuclear energy costs $112-189 per MWh. Also Solar PV with storage can meet base load power demands.
