Modern Media has forgotten how to do math. Zaccharie Risacher is making $12.6M because the Atlanta Hawks brought in$326M in revenue in 2023, and they aren't even in the top 15 highest earning teams. By comparison Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever made $9M last year. The facts are there, if no one watches the games, then the players don't make any money.

Because one year of popularity does not lead to a successful league. Let's wait and see if this popularity continues. Second, honestly, the WNBA is a minor league compared to the men. As someone who makes and lives on 51k, the idea that they cannot live on 200K is dumbfounding to me.

To be fair how well you can live off that much depends on where you are and what other services are required. $200K in a small town or even city is plenty. $200K in a HUGE city like LA or New York where you have to live in more congested areas for work and are expected to subsidize costs of training and medicine? Not so much. Then learning your male counterparts make 10x that, even if it makes sense why, adds salt to the wound. (Not saying that's specifically what's happening here but as an example.)

Another example is Uber and the AI companies like OpenAI. I think Uber just reported it's first annual profit but in prior years were in the negative. @@dissect123 Some point in the future they will make money, the investors to the WNBA are betting on it. Demographics favor it, tv deals prove it. If there is demand for college basketball, there will be a demand for WNBA. One thing many people in these comment section don't understand is that there is a huge demand for sports team from the owner/equity side, forget the millionaires that are bing minted in the US everyday, there are nations states (saudi and qatar) and billionaires looking to buy sport teams, if the WNBA proves to be even 1/10 the league NBA is, then these teams will get swooped up. Not only will the WNBA thrive, they will expand in the coming years, there is just too much money sloshing around and not enough toys to be bought. Even just for brownie points someone could buy one of these teams for 500 million. MUH WAHMN CAN't BALL, it literally doesn't matter. People used to think women wouldn't like video games, they don't like gyms. Within the last 10 years the majority of the gyms are filled with women now. All WNBA needs is a genrational talent like CC and some marketing for this to take off. If you can make esports a thing, making WNBA viable is a piece of cake.

It's interesting they didn't mention that record-breaking $2 million gate was for an New York v. Indiana game. I don't think NY has gotten as close to that figure with other teams. I know, they don't like calling out the Caitlin Carter Effect, but it is there! As has been reported, the Fever has 19 confirmed regular-season games with 1+ million viewers while only 3 other games not featuring CC's team reached that viewership mark. Some teams moved their Fever matches to larger venues to handle the crowds they attract. No other franchise/player is doing that. Astounding impact!

It bothers me how they repeatedly imply sexism because WNBA players are not paid as much as NBA players (while the NBA continues to lose money on the WNBA they created). But they downplay the fact that the very same WNBA players make far more money doing the exact same thing overseas! WNBA players are now making big bucks in endorsement deals. I've tried watching a full WNBA game this year. However after watching a plethora of missed layups, sloppy turnovers, slow paced game (and no dunking)....I end up turning the channel to baseball or football. Sure, Caitlin Clark makes great passes (that often result in missed layups or turnovers because the player she passed it to couldnt handle the pass) and shoots deep, stepback threes that are entertaining to watch. However, if no one else in The WNBA does things like that....why even watch it? I have yet to watch a non-CC game this year. If I'm going to invest 2 hours each game (over a full season) watching WNBA games...I have to be entertained! Missed layups, sloppy turnovers, slow paced basketball....is BORING. Vegas is an unicorn. Or at least has been in the past. The NBA involvement is not altruistic. They saw a way to add 20 revenue dates to the buildings the own or control. They also saw relatively inexpensive way to get women off their equity back. A couple of million a year is a rounding error to a NBA owner, almost exclusively billionaires. The revenue model makes them effectively first to get their money back. So no tears for NBA owners. It's hard to paint a economic picture that portraits the women in a bigger light. Removing C. Clark from the picture, the league is so slowly growing its laughable. Everyone, including Bill Burr, is right. Nobody is watching the game. Remove CC from the counts and viewership on average is less than a couple of million on its best day. Now the hundreds of millions dollar question is CC gonna take this league on her back. I have enjoyed watching her. She is pure basketball. She is also marketable as hell. She has a team around her who with one exception is young and also very marketable. But even the teams real veteran is young. There is resentment within the league for that as it will result in more money for her teammates. Gonna be interesting to see if in the new CBA there are more revenue sharing methods from richer to poorer. At the moment local money is all local. So merch is all retained. Big plus for a merchant town like Vegas. Which is where Vegas comes back in. Vegas never had sports teams because of the gambling issue. Now that pretty much every state has some form of legalized gaming, they were able to overcome the objection. Short of baseball every sport is represented. It's too damn hot in summer to play baseball in Vegas. So women's basketball makes much more sense. It's the only sports ticket in town. So for all these reasons, Vegas is a unicorn when it comes to valuation. Now is it enough? Time will tell. You also have a break to Canadian teams. The legal and tax issues on top of the other socialistic state of Canadian politics make rationalization of the economics to much for my American brain. The currency issues alone...

It's not about them making LeBron money, but them getting a percentage of the revenue that's closer to the NBA players. San Antonio Spurs won a championship wiht layups and passing. Dunk morons can't appreciate the game.

i think many would struggle to dunk even if the rim was 9 ft...look how below the rim they play! and then they would be ridiculed for struggling to dunk on 9 ft rims and would be embarrassing

@@atxgaming6998 That's how it should be, the rim shouldn't be so low that every one of them could dunk it like in the NBA. It should be just low enough so only the most exceptional players can dunk it.

But lowering the rim would deviate from the regulation for the rim height on the international scene. Having two different rim heights, one for WNBA, one for the rest of the world, would impede the WNBA players in the international scene, especially so for the Olympic Games.

I would give the W 5 more years to turn a profit. THe NBA should pull the plug after that , if the W isn't profitable. A fraction of the savings should then be diverted to women's collegiate programs.

The NBA wasn't built overnight, and neither will the WNBA. The WNBA is in a good position right now (thanks to more marketable athletes, who folks care about, joining the league this year), and hopefully will continue to maximize its position in the sports space.......

WNBA revenue is $150M per year but Disney is paying $200M per year? Sounds like a terrible investment.
