I forget where the actual figure is at but yeah the conventional banking system actually uses more power than even the energy inefficient ethereum network did. Well crypto has many problems I would question anybody who tries to claim that the environment is the biggest problem with it.

While the banking/credit card system also uses a lot of energy, it processes thousands or millions of times more transactions than crypto, making the watt-hours per transaction a tiny fraction of that on crypto. Unless crypto can get the transaction speeds WAY up and fees way down, it makes no sense.

The problem is not about green energy or what, the thing is that such amount of energy which could powers millions of households worldwide are used for transaction, which on the other hand classic transaction like bank didn't consume that much of energy. That's worrying, that's not the future we want because energy has limit and our resource to gather that energy to has it limit.

Banks consume energy whenever they try to predict a stock as you need data centres to do that. They have also probably started using punch card systems as early the 1980s. The one guy who said he invests into green infrastructure by creating data centres makes perfect sense.

Bitcoin will go green when the rest of the world goes green. In the end, bitcoin's power usage is another layer of security against attackers. You'd need a entire countries worth of energy output to even begin to have a silver of a chance to gain an edge on bitcoin.

Using renewables isnt helping a ton, it just takes those off the market for other, better uses. The proof of waste model is a failure for the world. Some of the old coins tried to mix in things like folding @ home so at least all that energy was used for something more than "hey i wasted a lot of energy trying to crack open a bitcoin packet" Proof of stake is better, and BTC needs to learn that one day.

Well, ETH already went green when it moved to PoS, even tho I wasn't using it too much and was using USDT on the TRX blockchain. BTC miners should find green energy sources, and I think it's possible now, we have a lot of options.

I'm not convinced the professor at New Mexico university did a good job calculation the pollution of Bitcoin. He says he's using country specific emissions for carbon and other pollutants based on where the miners are located. But Bitcoin mining has been greener on average than the countries where the miners are from. So this method will say bitcoin is more polluting than it really is. He even later admits that it's really challenging and hard to get the right data he needs.
