I have a theory for a while the reason why they were adopted predatory micro transactions is because of the rise of content, creator, and live streaming Because any video game live streamer can write micro transactions off and video game purchases off as a tax write off and get it back when they do their taxes So if you were making money by playing video games, you don’t need to buy those video games So those thousands of dollars that are being spent Are not being spent by Lil Timmy they’re being spent by big-name KZbinrs and live streamers Just average gamer, and Lil Timmy is caught in the crossfire, and They keep justifying it saying that everybody wants this, even though nobody wants it the reason why live streamers don’t complain because they get free micro transactions

A thing that wasn’t mentioned is that most microtransaction models depend on being addicting. Gatcha’s are the most obvious, it’s essentially a slot machine. Most of them, if not all, have an animation play before getting an item to create a bit of hype for an even bigger dopamine rush, especially if you get the item you want/need. Even just buying an item from the cash shop feels just as good as buying a new book or Lego set you’ve been looking at for a while. Cosmetics-only cash shop items depend on us wanting to fit into a group and using clothes and hair to indicate such a thing, not having a cool skin or virtual outfit can make you feel like a misfit in the game

I think the reason why they have ramped up micro transactions heavily over the past 20 years is because of the live stream content creation Because these live streamers can literally right micro transactions off as a business expense You can spend $5000 on fortnight Vbox and just because you are a Fortnite Contant creator, and if you play Fortnite and show off the skins that you buy with the money, you can literally get a percentage of that money back The reason why contact creators can spend so much money on video games because they actually don’t And that’s why video games have so many predatory micro transactions and it’s doing them good business Because instead of one little Timmy, buying one fortnight skin 10 Lil Timmys, give their money to Fortnite streamer to buy the skins and he gets money back because he bought the skins in Fortnite gets all of the money So if anything American taxpayers are paying for a percentage of video game sales

Bruh, look at the modern game and compare it to an old-ass game. It's not even a comparison. Modern games take A LOT to produce to the quality that people expect as a bare minimum. Some games need literal teams of hundreds of people to put together the graphics, sounds and everything else. It's a lot of money. You make it sound like these AAA games can be made on the cheap. Buy the Game, buy the Subscription for extra unlocks, buy the DLC for the extra side quest and content, and buy the micros for that sweet skin care. I don’t mind all these things, but the real issue is the Publishers don’t disclose the game costs until after release. There are so many people that just play that "one" game, don't really play anything else, and just wait for the next sequel to that game to come out. That's who they are preying on because they have them locked in. It just kinda takes the creativity out of the industry in my opinion and hurts the consumer who actually enjoys different types of games.

People pay up to $2000 just for a graphics card to play games where you constantly have to pay for micro transactions to get anywhere decent in new games. Almost seems better to not play modern games these days since they're more about setting up revenue streams for the company then actual game play itself. Back in the day top end desktop graphics cards were around $500. Also the games you bought back in the day were on a physical media you could actually keep and use again and again. These days game makers/publishers can pull those titles from your online service and they're gone. I still have my Windows 98se games and they still install and play to this day on my Windows 98se box. Can't do that with modern gaming.

What a softball of a video. No discussion about the predatory nature of many of these schemes that will purposely target an individual's weakness for gambling-like mechanics, as well as other insidious methods. That really bothers me. There are many people that have a difficult time resisting games of chance, and games like Call of Duty Mobile exploit that to the far extreme. It's disgusting. I am a developer, and 'recouping costs' is a big stretch. For games like Call of Duty, weapon skins may take two hours to create, then it goes on the store. No expensive marketing to recoup there. Developers such as Activision and EA will add a skin to anything and sell it. They would put a skin on air to sell it if they could.

If after watching this video you don't quite understand what a 'loot box' is, please let me explain. Unregulated gambling. Would you let your 6 year old go into a casino and use a slot machine? No, you wouldn't. Guess what? They can do it from your living room. Most countries in the world are yet to place ANY restrictions on unregulated gambling that is completely rampant in the video game industry. The ONLY thing that caused this gambling to be generally scaled back was when a major Star Wars game was released in 2017. This game made a much larger step than ever attempted to tie every aspect of the game to an unregulated gambling system. It was a slot machine. That combined by being so high profile due to Star Wars' popularity caused about a dozen countries to actually start investigating the unregulated gambling in this industry. Bills were discussed in US Congress that had BIPARTISAN SUPPORT. Getting both parties in the US to agree on anything since Trump has been virtually impossible and yet unregulated gambling in video games was so prevalent that this actually happened. However, in most nations all proposed legislation fizzled out. The scaling back of the unregulated gambling was big companies doing it of their own volition because they had realised if they kept pushing, public outcry would grow so large that governments would get involved and force them to do it. So better to SLIGHTLY dial the unregulated gambling back and still make billions (off games advertised as kid friendly) than keep pushing and get it banned completely. So the only country to place any significant restrictions/bans on this unregulated gambling has been Belgium. In short, your kid's Playstation is a slot machine. And unless you're well versed in the industry and know the VERY few companies that actually are consumer friendly, then any game you put in that Playstation could bankrupt you.

Since these services have their own flaws that can cause these services to become faulty at anytime as new Downloadable content/DLC can actually cause this problem to form new software bugs or errors to the existing software and no matter how old or new hardware/devices or the existing software is important to ensure the software developer has got great customer support, otherwise if dodgy the software is not fit for purpose, just like horizon system used at UK post office.

Even though I love their games, I wish more people held Sega accountable for their own microtransactions & terrible Day 1 DLC in nearly all releases. I'm a huge fan of Atlus games, but seeing dozens of additional $1.99+ content for a $70 single player game is just depressing. Even their "definitive," re-releases of existing titles (like Persona 5 Royal & the upcoming SMT V Vengeance), which are supposed to be the original game + all this expanded content, launch with Day 1 DLC! Then you have the recent Yakuza game, where New Game+ is locked behind DLC! Recent reports are that Persona 6 is 95% complete, but Atlus is currently working on an additional expansion pass to sell you. People will say "but none of that stuff is NECESSARY... it's optional!" but this is content that used to be unlockable through simply playing the game! And if it's available day 1, it should've been in the game to begin with, but was kept out to nickel & dime customers even more. It's also incentive for devs to make their games crappier, grindier, and more frustrating to incentivize spending additional money. That doesn't even get into all the battlepass, loot box, expansion pass stuff. This is the same generation where Sony increased hardware prices 2 years *AFTER* launch, game prices were raised to $70, and even basic online service was increased to $80! It's absurd.

If you account for inflation, game prices have gone down while the cost to produce them has gone up, SNES and N64 games were $60, Original Playstation games were $50. So microtransactions are needed for companies to stay profitable. I would much rather pay 60 to 70 dollars per game and have the companies make profit with microtransaction rather than paying 180$ to 210$ per game, which would be the actual cost of games if you adjust for inflation and profit margins each companies have to make.

They'll spend and spend without a care regarding what harm it's causing and sometimes they'll even come up with multiple excuses in order to continue doing so without guilt or self awareness. "It's just microtransactions it doesn't matter" "It's my money I'll buy whatever I want" as the quality of these types of games often drops because priorities shift and titles that were once meant to be a full experience turned into a half baked one so they couldn't profit off gamers. Things are changing, part of the whole gaming lay-off boom is happening because game budgets have sky rocketed and gamers are not buying into the live service model. It’s become a risky proposition. Take a look at Suicide Squad & Skull and Bones, both huge budget live service games that have flopped this year. Whilst some companies have cancelled live service projects, others have doubled down and want to continue pursuing this. I personally take the approach that if I am enjoying a game that was initially free to play or covered by my Gamepass subscription, then buying a cosmetic or battle pass shows my appreciation. If on the other hand I have spent money to buy a full priced game that has micro transactions from the outset or a game that has a yearly release (CoD, Diablo 4, etc), then I tend to avoid them at all costs. Fortnite have nailed the model, if a game is free to play, with a battle pass and cosmetics which won’t expire on the following years release. You can also buy the battle pass and it gives you enough v-bucks for the next battle pass (if you choose not to spend them in the store), as far as I am aware, no other live service game does this. Micro transactions won’t be going anywhere, loot boxes will but buying skins, cosmetics and all that are here to stay.

This is the best of both worlds. Hard core fans will buy outright for game preservation. Casual players will go cheap and spend a few dollars on micro transactions. All I want is an honest way to buy the entire game. Name your price. I can buy an entire house, car, microwave, etc. for one price. It should be the same for games.

I played for 4 years without paying and got enough free v bucks to pay for a battle pass, and the great thing in Fortnite is that if you play enough you end up getting enough v bucks to buy the next battle pass and a little more to be able to save up for a skin.
