What I still find odd about bitcoin is that people buy and hold bitcoin as if it is a stock. It was not designed to be a stock, but rather it was designed to be a decentralized cryptocurrency. Bitcoin never made sense to me. It's supposed to be like new currency that's meant to replace our current currency. But you can only get it by spending existing currency (USD ect), meaning that it's backed by our standing form of money. If everyone pulls their cash out, I would assume a Bitcoin would be worthless then. I believe most of Bitcoin investors are just that, an investor trying to make money. Not necessarily someone who understands what it is through and through. I've asked everyone I know that's into Bitcoin. When I ask them what is it exactly, most of them say "it's online money that everyone's buying so they're jumping in to to make some extra cash." The rest knew a little but not much either. What exactly are you buying? Digital currency backed by existing cash? If so why not just use Paypal, you use your cash as digital currency, no? Paypal just doesn't convert it to Paypal coins and have you selling it back and forth to eachother. They just keep it the same. You deposit $1000 cash and now you have $1000 value in digital currency. I don't know, maybe one day it'll make sense to me but today it sure doesn't.

All valid points. The things that come to mind for why I think bitcoin is important: - inflation of currency (dollars, euros, etc.) - decentralized operation - digital In regards to inflation, fiat currencies by design inflate over time. So ultimately, a dollar that you have this year will buy less stuff the year after that. And so on and so forth. Just look at chart of US dollar value over time. During different periods of time, inflation can fluctuate. In this case, something like gold (or bitcoin) is a hedge against that inflation. Gold gets produced at a slow amount each year (literally because nature dictates that). bitcoins inflation is deterministic (look into bitcoin halvings). Furthermore, there’s a capped amount of bitcoin that will ever exist. You cannot say the same about any fiat currency. In regards to decentralization, many bitcoin miners in different countries ensure that the bitcoin blockchain is secure and transactions are valid. No one country owns it, and no one country can shut it down... or dictate how many bitcoins can be created. You cannot say the same about fiat currency. Now the last thing is digital. If you agree with/see the value of the two statements above, then you’ll see why people think bitcoin is valuable. If we expand off of that assumption, then: - being able to send large amounts of that currency to other parties, doesn’t require sending massive amounts of physical matter around the globe. - The cost of sending becomes the cost of a transaction (e.g. electricity used by computers to send info over internet) - we no longer need a bank to verify the transaction - to me this is similar to the notion of CDs/tapes -> streaming, or physical mail -> email This year is a perfect example of how a central government can essentially print currency with no bounds. I’m not one of those who’s against government, but ultimately if I leave dollars in my bank account, they’ll naturally erode over time. Owning assets (real estate, stocks, commodities, crypto) are just different ways to gain value. But to me bitcoin fundamentally has the potential to be as powerful as the internet. So I’m my opinion, it’s almost risky to not have 1% of your portfolio in this asset class. But yea, no one knows for sure what the future holds. Do your own research, and make your own financial decisions 👌

Warren Buffett is one of the greatest investors of all time. He invests. He does not trade and he doesn’t speculate. Cryptocurrency involves a lot of speculation as to what price people will be willing to pay for it in the future. That’s not his game. Personally, I think cryptocurrency is a decent enough asset class to diversify your portfolio. And as for trading, well I think it’s just as good as any other instrument. But regardless of how high people expect it to rise, your portfolio should never be to focused in a volatile and unpredictable asset like crypto. For the average person dollar cost averaging into an index fund should be good enough.
@NeonGen20003 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is my biggest problem with Buffet. He talks down towards different forms of trading simply because he doesn't understand it. It's not his game. He's like a carpenter critiquing blacksmithing. And speaks in a way as if everyone should just be a carpenter as it's the only way to success. But the man has zero arguments when he is asked about James Simons and his success. I don't get why people listen to Buffet when they look for advice on speculating, the man is clearly biased against it.

@First name Last name A controlled market is not an organic market. Speculation works based on studying naturally occurring patterns in what is essentially mass psychology. Nobody claims it is a perfect science which will guarantee you profit. I'm not saying all regulations disrupt this, specifically the ones designed to stop or severely limit speculation. Those that stop naturally occurring patterns from happening. Like a bank that is supposed to fail in a free market which is saved by magic money from the government in a controlled market. Or the many regulations which exist that are supposed to "safeguard" speculators against themselves, massively raising the barrier to entry in the market. Explaining is difficult for me, English is not my first language.

I don’t know a lot about Bitcoin but from what I’ve learned it seems like the value it creates is that it solves a (potential) problem regarding mistrust in the financial policies of governments and currency devaluation. Like gold, it serves as a potential safe haven for assets so even though it doesn’t produce anything there’s still value from the problems it claims to solve. But until those expected problems become more apparent and becomes widely accepted enough by corporations, it seems like speculation to me.
@bruhbruh19933 жыл бұрын
Bitcoin is actually pretty simple, you don't have to be a computer programmer to understand it. (Remember that you don't have to buy bitcoins in individual units, you can buy 0.5 bitcoins, 0.01 bitcoins, etc...) Bitcoin's main point is that unlike the US currency, it is DECENTRALIZED. Decentralization is simply the EARTH of Bitcoin... And so is the fact that it CANNOT INFLATE! I know what you're thinking, "but the price of bitcoin inflates and deflates every second, are you stupid?" And that's a good question. The reason why it still inflates is because it hasn't reached its maximum supply yet: also called the supply cap. The supply cap is 21 million bitcoins. Once we reach that, not one more bitcoin will be mined. This means it would not experience any inflation due to switches in supply, only in demand; being less volatile. Bitcoin also removes the middlemen that the US dollar has, being the bank. The bank puts fees to merchants, which artificially raises the prices of goods and services. Bitcoin does not need any of those fees, which helps decrease prices. Bitcoin achieves this by, instead of verifying transactions through a central authority, it uses a network of decentralized computers that voluntarily installed the software in order to check Bitcoin transactions. Each transaction is called a "block", and the blockchain is all of these blocks one after the other, like a chain! And it's UNHACKABLE, because you have no time to hack the blockchain before transactions are completed. In order to prevent people from overwhelming the network, there are things such as: fees, transaction waiting time, and encryption. Encryptions are cracked by the computers, being what bitcoin miners do. They are rewarded with bitcoins (being where the fees go). Recently Bitcoin crashed because of several reasons, but it's gonna have another bullrun in a few years (as it always did, because it crashed in the following years [these are just a few examples]: {...}, 2013, 2017, 2020). I'm not saying that you should put your savings into it, I'm saying you should invest SOME of your money into it as a future very long term investment. I'm personally investing in Bitcoin in early 2022, because right now bitcoin is still decreasing and I'd rather buy more bitcoins at a lower price, and it'll "crab" from 2022 to possibly 2023 or 2024 because another bullrun comes.
@truegamer_0073 жыл бұрын
@@bruhbruh1993 I'm sorry but bitcoin and crypoto's biggest advantage is actually its disadvantage. Being decentralised means it's value will actually keep fluctuating forever. It's never gonna reach a point of stability. Real like currency being centralised means that it can actually be regulated and people use it because they are confident in its long term value and stability. I know the intention was to replace currency, but I think it has already failed. Bitcoin is only popular now because the price keeps rising. Once the last of bitcoin is mined, it will lose it's value as an investment and fade into obscurity.
@bruhbruh19933 жыл бұрын
@@truegamer_007 1. Bitcoin hasn't reached its supply cap yet, this is why it is hyper volatile. 2. Bitcoin does not "always go up", it has a bullrun every 3 to 4 years, then crashes and then crabs for the time in between with very little difference. Bitcoin is only useful to make money off of during bullruns, but a very good currency before and after bullruns. 3. US dollar is very overrated, it being centrally controlled means that the controllers can print as much as they want creating inflation in the process. The real inflation rate is over 5%, because CPI only calculates 33% of inflation. Therefore, the US dollar relies on infinit demand. We printed 40% of all US dollars in 2020, we're still experiencing inflation. 4. There are MULTIPLE cryptocurrencies, hundreds of thousands even. 95% of them are scams, but among those who aren't, some are called "stablecoins", and they are basically just as stable as the US dollar. New ones are born every day. 5. US dollar does not include smart contracts, storage units, no way to contribute to the US dollar network to gain profits *since there are none* , and it relies on trust in the government, which is unsustainable. Meanwhile, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin relies on trust in the blockchain; of which cannot be hacked. (Most of) Crypto > fiat
@truegamer_0073 жыл бұрын
@@bruhbruh1993 1. So wait till 2140? Really? 2. A currency that periodically becomes usuable is impractical. 3. Never specified US dollar. US govt is one of the worst culprits when it comes to regulating the banks. That's why crashes like the 2008 crisis happen. Countries with more regulation and tighter control on banks and currency are better. 4. Unless everyone rallies around a particular one or someone comes up with a way to integrate all of them together, not viable for everyday use. Why? Cause money needs simplicity and stability, multiple choices just create confusion. 5. You and me understand blockchain and trust it (probably you more than me, since I don't trust it 100%) but that's not true for most people. A lot of people investing in bitcoin don't even understand how it works. You can argue people will learn, but most people don't even know how their smartphones work. Something that we use all day. And about trust in govt, depends on which govt and currency you talk about. I'm not an American, can't speak for US govt. But I can say that if you can't trust your govt to keep the economy and currency stable, you have bigger problems to worry about.
@bruhbruh19933 жыл бұрын
@@truegamer_007 The amount of bitcoins made decreases over time, which means that eventually so little bitcoins are made per year that it doesn't affect the supply at all. We don't need to wait for 2140 for this to be apparent. The US dollar also has cycles, except that this time it never goes up; only down. We have an average annual inlflation rate of over 5% with the US dollar, not 2%, because CPI only tracks 33% of inflation. Then, every now and then, the FED just prints tons of dollars in one year due to a recesson causing the US dollar to go down massively. For example, the US dollar has recently gone down 5.3% every month for 5 consecutive months. Don't tell me also that holding bitcoins is better than spending them, because that's very logically fallacious. If I were to spend 1000$ worth of Bitcoins, most people would think I'd be a fool for not just holding it until it 10x. But if I were to spend 1000$ plain cash, people would think that's OK... This makes no sense, because on the ladder spending, I could of also just bought 1000$ worth of bitcoins and held through. Therefore, there's no need to worry about future price fluctuations. Also you can't trust any central entity to take care of the economy, it is impossible to take in all of the factors to do the right thing in the economy AND trust them to never be corrupt. What do you think caused the housing crisis? The FED is decreasing interest rates for mortgages to the point of overborrowing and overconsumption of real estate, causing a bubble that will never end until we increase interest rates, this also includes for planning laws that make it harder to make any homes. ALL fiat currencies depend on trust of the government, not just the USD. Bitcoin is not the only cryptocurrency, there are thousands more. Each of them with different purposes. You know that the Blockchain can be used for more than just storing transactions, right? It can store other forms of data, smart contracts, of which these smart contracts can include transactions, votes, etc.... You don't need to understand every aspect of Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency, because obviously you don't need to know how the US dollar is printed, what it is made of, and why it's made like that in order to use it.

To all people that are emotionally attached to Bitcoin: I do understand that you (including me) prefer another monetary system above the fiat currency but you have to keep in mind that the (current) underlying technology of Bitcoin is totally not what we all want it to be. I mean, are you going to purchase a coffee with a 10$ transaction fee? I don't think so my friends. In that case I fully agree with Warren that Bitcoin currently is nothing more than a big bet against rational valuation. And please show some respect to the man because he is the guy that donates millions of dollars and that sacrificed a lot of his time to study how to make as much money as possible through the power of compounding by spending as little as possible to eventually give it all away when he passes.

Stephan Rathé I read the first few lines and immediately came to the conclusion that you’ve never developed software nor have you even done proper research on crypto currencies.
@stephanrathe446 жыл бұрын
Well I assume you know a lot about the underlying tech so I'll take the opportunity and ask you: Why would you buy bitcoin?
@Bane926 жыл бұрын
Stephan Rathé No problem I will try and educate you. First of all you don’t buy Bitcoin. You buy BTC which is a cryptographic store of value used for transactions across the Bitcoin Network. As a store of value BTC does have high transaction fees which is why most people prefer to not sell especially given its finite amount. However you can purchase your coffee with BCH(Bitcoin Cash) which also runs on the Bitcoin network. Why is the Bitcoin Network so dominant? The Bitcoin Network lives in everyone’s computers who run a Bitcoin node. Being the grandfather of crypto currencies it has the most users chained together creating a very powerful network that can only collapse if an attack is issued taking 51% of the network for over 10 minutes(avg transaction time). Some describe this as Bio Software(the ability of software to grow and evolve) which serves as a transactional system of HARD GUARANTEES and the utmost security. There is no other crypto currency with this level of security. As a matter of fact if you took the worlds 600 fastest supercomputers to generate a 51% attack on the community your hash rate (level of computation) would still fall one thousand times short to the Bitcoin Network.
@stephanrathe446 жыл бұрын
Fair enough my friend! Good explanation but still... When I wrote "Bitcoin" I was referring to BTC and Warren Buffett obviously was also referring to the asset that increased to 20 000$ in no time and of which the popularity increased to an even higher level. So I was saying that when one buys BTC, one is basically just hoping that the greater fool is going to pay for it at a higher price so that capital gains can be made, just like gold, but is not used as a cryptographic currency as many people like to call it. So I'll rephrase my question: Do you personally buy BTC because you think/hope someone, 5, 10 or even 20 years from now will pay the same or even better, a higher price? Or do you use BTC as a functional currency to make daily purchases with and pay a huge transaction fee which is in fact progressively increasing with the amount of transactions that are made?
@Bane926 жыл бұрын
Stephan Rathé People without USD will buy BTC in hopes of an increase. But what about those with lots of USD at their disposal? These are two different worlds my friend.

Exactly. Crypto is basically FIAT without centralization. Tremendously more difficult to counterfeit too. Saying he's an insanely profitable investor is a strawman. @@matthewnabil If Bitcoin is Fiat, what do you buy with it? There are little to no stores that accept Bitcoin and yet it's value continues to increase. People use Bitcoins to buy real Fiat currencies and vice versa and that's just about it. There's also a problem with the way it's "created". It's not created through credit like other currencies meaning it's an asset not gotten from productive input into the economy. That's a recipe for a bubble. If I want to build a factory, I go to a bank and get a loan, the bank uses other people's deposits and does it's magic and lends me the money. When I pay back, new money is created and so the circle continues. The bank has more money, I have a factory that produces goods, and the depositor that gave his money to the bank still has his money. Yay! Everyone got something from it. Explain how I can accomplish the same feat with Bitcoins please.
@matthewnabil3 жыл бұрын
@@theinternetsavedmylife It's similar to FIAT in the sense that its worth is fluid unlike how our currency used to be based on gold. The difference between FIAT and crypto is that there is no central bank to dictate its worth away any given time, rather it is a more democratic effort where the value is dictated by traders and its use. Yes, it is currently used to primarily be converted to FIAT but that's because FIAT is the currency franca. There is no implication that cryptocurrency will or will not be the primary form of currency in the future. In the case that it does end up replacing FIAT it really is the same in the fluidity of its worth but inflated by traders and the economy without a central bank.

The government, by its nature, tends to print more papers when poverty increases and jobs are reduced to silence the citizen, especially in third world countries where poverty increases day by day. The problem of centralization is an old problem that economists have been thinking about for a long time and many people have discussed it without finding solutions, but digital currencies that I consider came as a blessing from God so that the government thinks about solving unemployment honestly And I don't want the true value of my effort, which broke my back, to be controlled by the government, and the value of my work changes according to someone in the government who decides the fate of the nation.
