I was reading about why so many wealthy Americans love UBS, that big Swiss bank. They’ve got a reputation for really understanding high-net-worth clients and offering discreet, customized services. Makes you wonder what exactly they’re doing differently
@roseyfischerАй бұрын
Yeah, UBS is known for helping their clients manage large portfolios and grow wealth. It's not just about where you put your money; it's about having a strategy that can handle different market conditions, especially when things get volatile.
@Annie2229Ай бұрын
Exactly. A lot of people trust them because they help navigate the ups and downs without having to stress too much. I’ve been thinking about whether I should switch to something more hands-on like that, especially as I want to make sure my investments are working for me, not just sitting there.
@MONROEJACQАй бұрын
That makes sense. But you don’t need to be ultra-wealthy to get good advice. Even if UBS might not be for everyone, it’s a good reminder that having an experienced financial planner can make a big difference in how your money grows.

This video deliberately leaving out that US citizens must report bank accounts in Switzerland to the federal government is interesting. These banks charge clients for the compilation of documents and sending it to US tax agencies. There are specific types accounts they don’t report such as retirement and special investment accts
@pa5666 Жыл бұрын
I thought the whole point of the video was that US citizens use these banks to hide their money so obviously while it's required that they must report it to the US, what's stopping them from not when the bank will clearly shield them...?
@markfitzpatrick7186 Жыл бұрын
And that the US is the only OECD country that refuses to participate in Common Reporting Standard. This has allowed the US to become the world’s largest tax haven in 8 short years according to Tax Justice Network. CNBC won’t report that - it is a much larger and more serious problem.
@dennisaleander5175 Жыл бұрын
So American citizens can have a retirement account with a Swiss bank and the Swiss government won’t report the account to the U.S government?
@markfitzpatrick7186 Жыл бұрын
@@dennisaleander5175 there are effectively 3 types of accounts: 2nd pillar is not reported by the financial institutions. These earn almost no interest. US tax rates applied on top of Swiss so these accounts effectively have negative interest rates due solely to US double taxation 3rd pillar is reported and US tax rates are extremely confiscatory. This is an important part of retirement planning and Americans living in Switzerland are effectively barred from participating. Finally there is private investment. These are reported by the financial institutions. Americans may not be able to get these kinds of accounts unless you have at least 250k to invest. US PFIC rules will apply so taxes will be extremely high and filing costs are in the thousands each year so this is not practical for lower net worth individuals.

Like other commenters have written, this video is inaccurate. Banking secrecy for foreign depositors in Switzerland is largely a relic of the past. People like Eamon Javers are the reason why Swiss banking works. Many American bankers have no understanding of international diversification and therefore do not bring any stability to their clients portfolios. While it is true that in good years you probably will get a better return in the US, in bad years, you will lose much more when being fully invested in the US market only. Additionally, Americans with Swiss bank accounts appreciate that the Swiss banks do not sell their data to third party providers as is oftentimes the case in the US.

The US managed to dislodge Swiss banking secrecy for individuals with US exposure - hence these better bring a lot of funds to make it worth the special setting and the headache that comes with it. Some banks might decline at all. Swiss bankers like to point out that some US states nowadays provide more secrecy. Also, the purchase of CS by UBS with its pretext and consequences is not represented accurately.

What are you smoking? Switzerland has one of the lowest income tax in the entire Europe. Your second point about safe haven despite the fact that FATCA exists? I don't see any logic in that.

Switzerland has a *corporate* tax rate that doesn’t exceed 11.5%.

Pretty sure banks in Switzerland have to report all kinds of things to government authorities just like banks in any other country. KYC is basically enforced everywhere. And if a bank would refuse to enforce KYC they'd simply be excluded from the banking system. Apparently in the past (I'm 25 so I don't have first hand experience lol) "numbered Bank accounts" were a thing? Like in the 70s? Maybe 80s? Where you opened an account and all you had was a number but the bank didn't actually know who tf you were? All they knew was "Here is this account and money goes in and money goes out and if someone with that number autorized a transaction we do it" but they had zero knowledge of ANYTHING. Also banks and governments worked together much less in general. But that stuff is far in the past. In today's digital and connected world, international communication is EVERYWHERE. Doesn't matter if you have some shell company in Bermuda. The bank there has to take your info and here they realize "Ah okay the person opening the account is from Spain" and then they will automatically send all info regarding that account to spanish tax authorities. Congrats. Whole lotta effort for nothing lol. The only way that I can think of on how someone could hide their wealth is by going to a bank (MAYBE a suiss one?) as a "High Networth Individual" and then you strike a deal with some high animal in that bank to make a secret account that they simply don't report? But I'd imagine that this is probably not even possible and also it would be super illegal for anyone involved lol. Plus IF this were possible and are ARE using it, you can now be blackmailed. "Do this for me or I tell the governments that you had a secret bank account for the past 5 years and evaded X Millions of dollars in taxes". Doesn't really sound worth it. Especially cause the super wealthy have enough loopholes to "evade" taxes. So in short: swiss banks are no different from any other bank.

Basically a cycle that happens everywhere, with money, power, etc. Everything concentrates, then it blows up, fragments, and concentration starts again.

You know that there is FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act). So as an American having a Swiss bank account it's practically impossible to avoid paying taxes that way...

Lol they wrote off $17billion worth of their own bonds. How is this not tarnishing the image of the Swiss banking system?! Not to mention the debacle after the UBS acquisition of Credit Suisse and that insane share swap.

@@henokmengsteab2177 clearly they don’t, other countries require disclosure of depositors names to the government. UBS does not disclose their clients name from the country the account holders from to the country they are doing business with.
