The Asian American Pacific Islander population is extremely diverse, culturally and economically. According to a recent analysis by the Pew Research Center, Asian household incomes range from $44,400 to $120,000. Subgroups at the low end aren’t represented by the median data. Here’s a closer look at the growing income gap among Asian Americans, how it started and what’s next.

Filipino and Indian immigrants usually come to the US with some degree of education, typically a college degree, and a good knowledge of written and spoken English. These two things give them a good headstart in the US. But it’s really the hard work, determination and living for family that set asians apart from other households. The reason most Asians migrate to the US is because they want a better life for their family. I would do everything to provide a good future for my parents, siblings and kids, no matter the cost

@@purploscity H probably meant the latest standard, starting from the 2000s. Like our former mayor worked for a affluent family as their driver, we have a principal that is a dog walker and a dentist that is a care giver. And it's all because our third world education probably aint enough. So you gotta hustle hard. The thing is, if you've made it in the Philippines, you'll probably smart enough to make it in the US where opportunities are plenty specially ir you're educated. If we go back to the 20th century though, you'll have more California farmers and blue collar Filipinos. But the thing is, the common denominator of almost every immigrant family wherever you are is the drive to work harder than the native population of America.

One key thing for Asian community's success is incredible hard work. We can put in all the hard work that probably a westerner would complain to do. For us Indians, having great education is the seen as the only way forward so you'll see almost every Indian American very highly qualified professionals. At our homes we are out under a lot of pressure to study hard and do good in academics and that might sound very rude for others but honestly it really helps in building a great career.

Yes, very important and very good values to instill. Many Africans, especially Nigerians follow this mindset, but that is often missed for deliberate reasons by "Westerners" (hate that term). Easier to paint the idea that Asians of all persuasions are a model minority, while us Africans are ignorant villagers with our hand out or refugees with no marketable skills. Indians however do not place a limit on what they can do with their education, as too many Africans are content to be simply be doctors/medical running a practice, working at a pharmacy or hospital. Or obscure, high paying 9-5 STEM jobs. At the very absolute best earning $1 million a year (as a doctor), while I guess Indians eye not just medical or middle management in engineering, but creating or heading large corporations that can churn out billions. Not everyone can be a doctor, but going into business fields and excelling, makes a world of difference, Especially Silicon Valley. Indians do everything. (but who is not to say other non-Asian POC haven't tried too and been rejected by financial institutions?) That is why Indians have a high median income, unlike other educated immigrants. A higher amount of millionaires. Despite stupid docile stereotypes, they see it as "the sky is their limit" on an individual level and are very very competitive, to sometimes a hurtful level (against others). Not to mention, Indian Americans don't have a culture which is anti-intellectual, that can negatively influence 2nd or 3rd generation youth, against their parents' principles. Asian parents are also very unrelenting in molding high achieving children, because if they have to cut out the "fun" or the "cool stuff" to ensure their kids' futures, they'll do it with no hesitation. Rugged individualism is discouraged and their greater communal good, emphasized. Other immigrants tend to struggle, because they allow negative/unproductive US societal influences to creep in much easier and derail their kids' focus. I.E. rugged individualism, that tells someone, they don't need to be financially successful and earn big bucks like mom and dad (to send back home). Nigerians and other Africans might try, but it can vary if your child is exposed to certain groups of people at school who don't value education as much and slip through the cracks, while you are busy working in a hospital earning tens of thousands for not only yourself, but to help family. They are simply practical and competitive, to get ahead and not want for anything.

For people who are willing to put in the hard yards, the US is still a land of dreams. Despite coming from many diverse countries and cultures, they do have some common ground. A lot of the disparity comes from the fact that recent arrivals will always have less of a base to start from, sometimes from scratch. But they knuckle down and build the foundations for the next generation, who will then build on that for the generation after. Instead of the "me first" attitude of western society, they usually have a "family first" approach. In fact, they have much more opportunities than in Asia - where corruption and personal relationships (or lack thereof) stop many people with genuine ability from getting ahead, at least in the US (and other western countries) people generally are able to be rewarded for their abilities.

There's equality of opportunity (rather the locals have an advantage over the migrants as should be). They don't get paid more just because they are from Asia/Indian subcontinent. It takes a huge struggle to be able to get a visa and secure a job/migrate here in the first place. Adjusting to a completely foreign land with different language and culture is also another emotional hustle. Inspite of all this, they manage to do well in their lives and contribute to the society, I don't see how it is bad for the US. If they are able to overcome all those obstacles and contribute to the society and do well for themselves, then they should be congratulated.

Okay...but if you stop grouping by race and ethnicity there is also no meaningful way to talk about systemic racism (including refuting it, if you are sceptical). Culturally, we aren't going to stop having these categories - language is functional, and there is going to be a need to refer to particular meta-ethnic and phenotypic groupings in some contexts for the foreseeable future. That said, I agree that 'Asian American' is a bad grouping - Asia is such a massively diverse continent, it's not much more informative than just saying 'Other' - I'd at least split it into East, South-east, South and West Asian(/Middle Eastern).

No--not even close. Inequality can affect different groups of people very differently. Did you not pay attention to this video clip? [or, do you reject their data and rationale?] And, get serious--America nowadays is NOTHING like 1930s Germany; then, the official German government (with the consent/approval of the German people, at large) actually targeted minorities (particularly the Jewish people, certainly) by spreading false rumors, and pushing economic discrimination (like boycotts). Very different.

In the United States, the Burmese people tend to be immigrants, fresh off the plane. So, it is expected that they make low-income. In contrast, India is much wealthier and better populated, including skilled workers. Some of those skilled workers go to Western countries for school and jobs. Skilled workers, in general, expect higher pay than non-skilled workers. Ethnic Chinese in America hold a wide range of jobs. The most assimilated and established of Chinese-Americans may be college-educated, may have served in the military and may act more American than Chinese. New immigrants may be skilled if they arrive on a work visa or student visa, or unskilled if they come with their significant other who has the student/work visa. Sometimes, immigrants may be highly educated licensed physicians in their home countries, but because of the language barrier and American medical school courseload, they are forced to take menial labor jobs or are forced to put their medical skills in medical technology or scientific research.

I cannot understand why income inequality is a problem and why it needs to be solved. Because everyone needs low income jobs. There should be people working in restaurants, cleaning, and other low paying jobs for society to prosper. Why Indians earn 50% more than US whites ? Reason is simple. Only the best of the best Indians are able to get a job VISA in USA. So only the highly paid scientists, engineers and doctors are able to get a US work VISA. America has the most big tech corporations, and India has the largest availability of quality tech resources. So both these parties love each others for their growth and survival. In most other Asian countries, the tech industry is almost nonexistent, so many unskilled workers are able to get VISA, thus their medium income is low.

There are 48 countries in Asia with a huge spectrum of wealth and education level. We have Indians, Koreans, Japanese, etc. who are probably well educated and well skilled already from their home countries even before imigrating. Maybe 1st gen back in the days started from the bottom but now it is a different story. Plus these are cultures that prioritize extreme diligency(too much in my opinion). On the other hand, we have countries in Asia with very low education level and wealth. We have south Koreans with on average of 96% college degree and we have some other Asians with on average of 1 digit percent college degree. Singapore has a GDP per capita of 100,000 while Nepal's is 3,000. People need to understand when it comes to wealth and education level, Asia is not a good categorization since some of Asians are on average more educated and well off than average europeans. It is a continent with a huge range of spectrums. You can't compare salaries between an Indian dude with a PhD in computer science and a south east Asian dude with no college degree. And by the way, Asians don't feel the same group mentality as white Americans or African Americans. Koreans are Koreans, Japanese are Japanese and indians are indians. Some even have rivarly. So when Asians themselves tell you Asia need more categorization, culturally, financially and education level wise then there should be one.

Nope. Ever notice China town look like a theme park; it is because of systematic racism, white people in the past could forcefully take away lands owned by Chinese-American. Disparities within the Asian-American group seem to reflect their ethnic/national/cultural background. For example, Hmong Americans, who are among the poorest in America, are also among the poorest within Asia. Not only were they persecuted after the Vietnam War by the Lao government, but even long before that, Hmong have traditionally lived on marginal lands throughout Laos, Vietnam and China. Today, the Hmong/Miao larger group are very much behind other groups within their home countries. Burmese come from a country which has been mired in authoritarian rule with little economic development for decades, and thus it is not surprising that they come to America with a starting point that is far behind Chinese, for example. Han Chinese have been among the most successful ethnic group within China for millennia, and so again, it's not surprising that the cultural traits that made them successful within Asia also make them successful in America. Most Vietnamese that came as refugees after the Vietnam War are actually ethnic Chinese who were persecuted by the ethnic Vietnamese.

My mom was born to a single mother in the projects of Baltimore, MD and my dad grew up a farmer (to whom his dad, an alcoholic and never paid the lands' property taxes), moved homes a dozen times before dropping out of high school at 16. The odds of "making it" were nearly slim to none. Long story short, my dad owns multiple real estate properties and my mom works for herself. They'll be retiring soon as multi-millionaires. Yes, I know I'm white, but the income gap doesn't care about your race, ethnicity, or background. Straight to the point... A college degree is not your safe haven nor is a job. We lived on $22k CAD/year for a 3 person family.During this time, we moved about once every 3 years due to my dad changing jobs. That was 20 years ago. We now live in the US, bc/ of more opportunities. Now, my dad makes about $130k+/year, my mom makes about $65k/year. I just got promoted and make $100k/year at 26, younger brother just started at Princeton and two other siblings have tutors for anything they want. This is BS that everyone needs a lot of help. It's just that nobody shares their 'inspiring story' of having roughly that same socio-economic status as their parents. Do you have any stats to back up that 'Most of the 2nd generation does fine.' line?

@@kevinkasp Definitely true. But the problem is some people don't have the will to pull through it.

For new Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indian immigrants to come to the US, it’s required to have higher degrees. Most come as post docs with PhDs and have master’s at minimum. Yeah, you would have higher income levels! (Still not that high

This is why race based quotas are ridiculous. On one hand you can have an African-American son of a physician geting preferential treatment at a top university while a Hmong immigrant would be classified in with the rest of the Asians.

Stop posting things like this, why you think people beating up asians. This is so skewed, asians make up roughly 6.5% of the US population. White people and Black People are the majority and from what I've seen they make the most money, as they are more often promoted to management. The only difference is that there are more white and black people that are also extremely poor which skews the averages down. Asians are working hard to survive in America, nothing including Harvard acceptances come easy for us, my own corporate job I am doing double the work as some of my white and black counterparts but I'm the only one always being told to shut up, keep my head down and help out others (Basically be a "model minority" and "model asian") but where's my promotion? At this point I'm getting pretty burnt out not getting some recognition as being management material. America is so freaking racist, it's ridiculous 🙄

Caucasian Americans have even bigger income difference. Almost all richest people are White, and most homeless people are White.
