Mercedes-Benz is perhaps the biggest name in luxury cars globally, and for countless buyers around the world, it is a car brand to aspire to own. The German automaker has a reputation for superb build quality, excellent engineering, and the bragging rights that its founder Carl Benz invented the first production automobile.
Today, Mercedes-Benz faces a new class of challenges as Tesla has become the aspirational brand for younger consumers. There is a slew of other EV hopefuls vying for the next generation’s aspirational vehicle’s mantle. Automakers have had to sink billions into new technologies and contend with a new crop of competitors in the critical Chinese market and around the world.

Mercedes-Benz is not so prestigious in Europe as it is outside of Europe; in fact, Mercedes-Benz taxis are very common, especially in Germany. MB has lost its way though, due largely because of corporate executives who are more interested in the bottom line, and don’t necessarily care about quality control or consumer interests.

Yes taxis are commonly MB in Germany but they still are seen as one of the most prestige cars to drive and still turns heads when you see a c63 or s63 etc. MB definitely is still highly rated in Europe and counts to one of the prestigious car brands

Don't get me wrong, they are money pits. But most people who get a modern German car drive them hard and do not maintenance. Yes, a Toyota or lexus will be 100x more reliable on the engineering, but I have worked on my 2012 boxster (6 speed manual, the PDK will break) for the better part of 160k miles and it's running smooth as ever. Regular oil changes, drive slow over bumps (don't break the suspension) and use the right gasoline. But most importantly, don't abuse the car all the time. That said, the German turbo engines are just flawed. Direct injection clogs the valves, poor machining of the valve train, excessive heat and poor quality metalwork does plague the newer engines. Only Toyota and Honda seem to be able to build a high compression, high rpm engine that lasts.

I'm glad that so many watchers have made that observation. The title of the video consists of two claims: 1. Mercedes is losing its prestige, 2. We will present to you on the video how it's happening. Neither is true. There's a section on the video about Mercedes having quality problems starting in the 90's, and continuing from there for some time, but according to the video that problem was rectified quite a long time ago. Unfortunately I have to give a down-vote for the video. Titles are important, because they affect strongly on how people interpret the content. If the title and the content contradict each other, most of the time people absorb what the title says.

My experience with a benz was a five year old c300 I owned years ago with about 60k miles where the engine mounts needed replacing and it also had a bit of oil leaks and the guy at the dealer tells me that these are “not so uncommon issues” with benz even as early as around 40k miles. A week later I sold that car and have owned lexus and acuras since then and have never had any major issues. I dont mind paying a bit more for a ‘luxury’ brand, but a relatively expensive brand that isn’t reliable? That’s were I just rather not venture… just my experience and have never gone back to the brand even after rising the corporate ladder where I can now afford nicer cars. Do right by your customers and as they grow financially they will stick with you into the more expensive models, but burn them in the entry models and they never come back…

If I'm buying an MB I expect it not to be filled with plastic hoses that break due to heating/cooling cycles. I expect it not to develop oil leaks and suspension failures just because "it's an MB". MB consistently wins on styling and comfort, but that's not enough to keep a customer nowadays. Hopefully their new EVs will bring back the brand's pre-model-year-2000 reputation again!

Owning Mercedes from '80s, most notably 123 and 124 was like investment. It was like buying a house - it was expensive, but it would last you a lifetime. They were cheap and easy to maintain, and longevity was very good. In that sense, Mercedes brand had no problem showing that it produces truck, dumpsters or even more agricultural Unimog - unthinkable in US today. I have a family friend that worked in Mercedes repair centre in Frankfurt, and he could talk for hours how much effort it took to properly paint the car.

The voice over discussed how the car secured its occupants using various then-new features. The video ended by showing the family who was in the car looking healthy. It was a great ad. My parents were so proud to buy their first Mercedes Benz when they finally retired. It was an endless money pit. It was at the repair shop countless times. Sooo many trouble with the transmission (autotronic), the AC not working when it was raining, the sunroof kept dying, other problems with the electronics… My parents aren’t rich so it was really sad to see them struggle with such a horrible but expensive car. My mother actually cried a little when they finally decided that enough was enough and that they would sell it. But they’re now driving a Toyota Corolla Hybrid for a couple of years and they never had a single issue. And a 10 year warranty. My mother is so thankful that it always just works. Very low maintenance costs. It may be ugly and boring compared to a Mercedes but it’s very fuel efficient, very safe and extremely reliable. So no more Mercedes Benzes will ever be purchased in my family.

I bought my first Mercedes, a 300D in 1984. It was $32,000 new in the US at that time. The car was indestructible until I got hit by a driver who ran a stop sign. I was disappointed that the insurance totaled it and I got $7500 for it even though it had 240,000 miles. In the folowing 39 years I owned a 1987 300E, a 1988 300E, and a 1990 300CE. Folowed by a 1998 E320, a 2000E430, and a have 2001 E430 Sport. I still own my classic coupe 300CE and both E430's. The $32,000 cost of the 1984 300D would be $93,000 in 2023 because of inflation. But a 2023 E300 starts at "only" $59,000. So there is $30,000 in quality missing. The newer cars are full of elctronics and techonlogy that breaks. Nothing broke on my old 300D. Those cars were built to last up to 1 million miles. Today, Mercedes is more like Toyota or Hyundai, built for the 3 year lease, after which all the problems come. My 2001 E430 Sport is 22 years old but looks better, has high quality leather, and a bulletproof V8 that is more reliable than any new MB. It isfast and handles like a sports car. It only has 97,000 miles on it so I have no plans of buying a new Mercedes.

Because American car manufacturers have had the Jeremy Clarkson philosophy on making cars since the 80s : MORE POWER. They put more money into making a powerful engine rather than focus on inside luxury amenities. It's gotten a lot better now, but it was especially apparent in the 2000's. Also the american business climate has been more inclined to cut costs at any means necessary in order to hit quarterly goals; compared to the European business model which tends to lean more towards investing in long term growth rather than making as much money as fast as possible.

4:58, it like Mercedes has became the opposite of that. I'm wondering if this is where we have gone wrong as a society in general. Rich people historically were paying for a simple car, but also a car made to very high standards. So basically they were paying for a car that would be more comfortable than other cars and have less issues in the long run. The car simplified their lives, it's almost like it can be appreciated but became invisible in a sense. Whereas nowadays a luxury car is seen as more complex with all the electronics and computers. It stimulates us more, but then, even if cars generally last longer, since it's complex it has more potential to go wrong more often and then because it's so complex it's hard to repair that you would always need a specialised car mechanic or technician to repair the car. So it doesn't simplify our lives. It doesn't become invisible but more like a distraction. We probably have to figure out a way to make information technology more invisible and problem free if it is to truly add to the luxury feel of a product I think. Yes, high tech does make someone look rich but it doesn't feel like it's more luxury as it isn't seamless enough yet that it can fade into the background.

Actually, the 220Sb could have cost a mint to repair, had I taken it to my local M-B dealer. Some time after I got it, the rear bearing in the generator failed, mostly because I didn't know it had an oil cup. A new generator was available through the dealer, priced at $712 (around $1200 today), plus about $150 to bolt on and connect the leads. I built an E63S just before the pandemic to spec and I had to sell it because it was so uncomfortable for my back. And I got the comfort seats. I expected it to be rougher in sport mode or sport+, but in comfort it was really stiff. I was told I was getting a plush, comfortable car with a powerful engine and I could stiffen the handling if I wanted to. I've also driven the regular E-class, S-class and the BMW 7 series (all non-motorsport). They were all way too sporty. Is every car made for 16 year olds now? My first car was a 1990 Chrysler 5th Avenue and we can debate build quality, reliability and all that stuff all day long, but it was the most comfortable car I've ever driven. It had a velour interior with the power seat controls in the door where they belong, not down the side of the car seat. Every car now is a joke when it comes to luxury, including Mercedes. My Chrysler 300C with AWD that I bought 1 year old in 2009 was more comfortable than 90% of the "luxury" cars I've driven. Everyone's so afraid of being called the "grandpa car manufacturer" that they've lost sight of what luxury actually is. It's not about horsepower, handling or lights underneath the car. It's about a soft, smooth ride. Luxury cars all used to have V8 or V12 engines. No turbos allowed. They existed not for speed but smooth acceleration and comfort. Again, we can debate their reliability, but it's been a number of years. I think they could have improved in that area. I'm less concerned about cars going electric in this respect, because I would assume that an electric engine would have a smooth power delivery, whatever its 0-60 time is and it would increase the comfort level, not decrease it. A luxury car is the exact opposite of a sports car. It should be luxurious and comfortable, not sporty and rough. If you want something like that, get a Corvette or a Porsche. I have a bad back and it's getting harder and harder to find a car that isn't going to send me straight to the chiropractor or worse, the back surgeon. At least I have healthcare in Canada.

This is an issue on all cars thanks these giant alloy wheels that are being fitted with rubber band low profile tyres. You can have the best air suspension and softest most luxurious seats but 70% of the cars suspension is the tyre and if their is less sidewall then the bumps and imperfections in the road will not be absorbed as well. Look at a flagship luxury car from the early 2000s and look at one today and immediatly you'll notice the difference in wheel size and tyre profile its staggering.

The problem with luxury cars now is that manufacturers are targeting middle class buyers instead rich buyers who can buy these vehicles in cash. Back in the day you wouldn't ask someone what their car note was because most people that bought a Mercedes paid for it up front. This meant that Mercedes could build a car without worrying the cost of materials and mark up the car. This led to reliable vehicles. Now days everything is cutting corners to make sure the car is in a certain price bracket based on the class of the vehicle.

This does nothing but water down the brand and those looking for status no longer are exclusive. It's the beginning of the end for the brand as it was known.

That’s a bs excuse for poor reliability given a cheap Toyota will easily outlast it, a car doesn’t need to cost a lot to be reliable. And you can’t argue it’s because a non luxury Toyota is simpler, when a highly complex Lexus LS is also just as reliable. It’s nothing to do with cost or complexity but the attitude of the brand, when it comes to reliability.

My gripe with the German top 3 is that they never gave a warranty to back up their "German engineering" sales pitch. Their servicing/repairs are too expensive which leads owners to seek so called "mechanics" to fix their cars which results in ruining the car for the next owners and it gets worse from owner to owner. Also from my own experience, the servicing departments won't fix the issue if it's too involved and see you out, you only have to look at the multitude of KZbinrs showing how difficult it is to trace some engine faults, it's enough to give you nightmares. Yes their cars are great to drive but at a high cost.

Very easy when "180" bargain basement models exist and destroyed the C & D segments for many brands. A reason why many Japanese gave up in Europe, when locals would rather buy poverty spec A180/C180, A2/A3/A4, or 118i/318i over a rebadged Acura (Accord), Lexus IS, or Nissan Primera/Infiniti G37/Q50 2.2d/3.5h. Even for more basic Japanese brands, that was the case. Lower margin, cheap German brand vehicles ate into Japanese market share.

The market has clearly spoken. Its up to the Germans to decide if they want to keep their share of the US auto market. Most consumers value reliability and longevity more than gimmicky creature comfort. And you can have both if you purchase a premium Japanese brand. The resale value of german vehicles after a few short years tells you all that you need to know. I came very close to purchasing a g wagon before I decided on the LX 600. For less money i got an incredibly comfortable and capable vehicle that was not only less money upfront, but for the foreseeable future

The reliability and repair cost of MB vehicles have gotten out of hand, this coupled with the haughty attitude of the dealers (reflected in their pricing) makes brands such as Lexus and Acura more appealing since they offer the same features with better pricing and the ultimate luxury, reliability. Two of my most recent MBs have had serious on the road breakdowns that required them to be towed back to the dealer, this on relatively new vehicles that had been carefully serviced. My '99 runs on more reliably and with its classic design is still the best looking in the garage. The price of MBs on the used lot is telling, my Ford Excursion held its value better than my GL, and my Toyota truck did even better than either of them.

I own a 1973 450 SLC, built when Mercedes were still considered the standard for automobiles. In 73 it cost almost as much as 2 Cadillacs but it wasn’t available with a power seat, adjustable steering wheel, not even 1 cup holder, and you couldn’t even get carpet in the trunk. The average Cadillac or quite a few other brands had more features than an SLC. Mercedes didn’t care much about what they considered unnecessary features. The engineering, materials and build quality sold the vehicle. You want buttons?, go buy something else. Now a new Benz has so many gizmos and dodads that most owners have no idea how many different things their vehicle can do. And all that technology comes with a price, to purchase and to own one of these technological terrors is not cheap. Used high end vehicles are very affordable on the secondary market because potential buyers are scared to death the thing will break and they’ll have to sell a kidney to get it repaired. I wonder what the engineers that designed that SLC would think about today’s top of the line models? Try explaining to a guy that thought a cup holder was a frill how you need a car that can park itself. I’d like to listen in on that conversation.
