And surprisingly nutrious, despite what some people say. The problem with fresh food is that they will lose their nutritonal value (and start spoiling) over time even if you use a circa 38° F. refrigerator, while frozen food will not spoil over a lot longer period of time if kept under 32° F.

Remember folks .. there is a difference between frozen MEALS and frozen foods. Prepared microwave wave frozen MEALS usually have the lowest quality ingredients and are the most processed Frozen foods are usually fruits and veggies that are picked at thier peak ripeness and can handle the freezing process. Most comerical kitchens actuall use frozen goods to make the meal because fresh is not that fresh.

That used to be the case until the last 5-6 years as brands like Devour began to shake up the market and forced everyone to increase their quality. Frozen meals now are pretty decent in terms of quality but suffer the same stereotypes that started up 50 years ago when people used the cheapest and worst quality ingredients possible for said meals.

This. When I was in japan I could just walk across the (very narrow and safe) street and grab what I wanted in 5 mins and if I needed more stuff I just used a handcart. Also american grocery stores are all basically almost on the scale of being warehouses, so just going in and out for a few items is extremely inconvenient. It takes me 10 minutes to drive to the nearest store (which is probably better than average relative to the rest of the country), then literally for a few items it takes 15-30 minutes between having to park, find them all the way in the back of a store or getting lost in the aisles and having to wait in line to check out and ultimately leave the shoping center. Before you know it, I've lost almost an hour. Living alone, I don't bother buying fruits or bread. Produce in American stores are also pretty poor quality often already molding on shelves. Fresh bread is non existent and despite the loads of preservatives still goes bad anyway. I will sometimes skip meals bc I'm too tired to fit in a simple grocery trip. I also live in what's apparently ranked as one of the best suburbs in the country.

So where does this put me? I love frozen foods! I also have fresh food always. Honestly though, who would physically walk to a grocery store when it's nearly 95°F??? No freaking way! It's smarter to drive to the store to get that food home asap. Food requires cooler climate control to not go bad. I say all this because it's practical yet I, too want walkable living space rather than everything built around cars.

The freezer is also a great tool for meal prep purposes. You can make your own individual portions of meals just as well as a larger company. Certain frozen foods are actually more nutritious than fresh. Take vegetables like green beans and carrots. Flash frozen vegetables are done so at peak ripeness and are flash frozen within hours of picking them. The fresh produce section has days old vegetables that are generally picked before they are properly ripened. In other words, vegetables in the frozen food section contain more nutrient rich vitamins and minerals than fresh vegetables in the produce section. This does not include TV dinners or vegetables with sauces. Those have tons of sodium and are far less healthy than fresh veggies.

I froze a lot of stuff from my garden last year, because I couldn't eat it all fresh, and some foods need more than just a cold room to keep them fresh. Part of it is that fresh fruits and veggies are often unripe as they need to be firm enough to survive the journey to the store without getting bruised, and they want them to look pretty (because American ideals of what makes food "good")so a lot of food can't even be used because of visual defects, where as with frozen (or canned) the visual defects don't matter at all and the food can be gotten closer to ideal peak ripeness so it will taste better.

There are a few rare things for example like frozen peas which actually tend to work better in most recipes than fresh peas. There are certain frozen items that does work better in most recipes. I always have frozen peas and frozen potatoes in my freezer even though I tried to eat as fresh and as local as possible just because those two items function better frozen and things like pasta sauces and casseroles and stews. I also like to have an emergency bag of 15 vegetable minestrone so that I always have something to make a soup for dinner if I don’t have time to get to the market. I don’t think the bulk of your diet should be frozen items but it’s good to have on hand for emergency situations and for things like peas which honestly just cook way way better from frozen.

Frozen foods are actually often more nutritious than fresh goods because nutrients deteriorate after harvest. Sugar added to frozen foods though is among the greatest detriments to their nutritional value. Also the tendency to eat frozen pizza or gravy laden dinners leads to the misinterpretation that the food is less nutritious. @@yuegonghuamei6685 the chemical makup of frozen biotic material has actually been widely studied for different purposes both nutritionally and medically. Freezing nano ice crystals and/or freeze drying are among the most preservative non-damaging ways to save nutritional values, nutritional values including micro-nutrients and probiotics. The problem is that our food system is designed to sell the most addictive, unhealthy, and sloppily preserved food possible. Even this video talked about hos the California strawberry industry had been poorly freezing and destroying nutritional value from their crop, which they also sprinkle with sugar which you could've read on a lot of frozen strawberry packages over the years. I moved from EU to the US 10 years ago and did not gain any weight. I shop at a local Co-op where I can get plenty of healthy foods and cook. If you eat pizzas from Walmart or McDonald's and similar, yeah you will gain weight. Unhealthy foods are more accessible in the states in general, but no one is forcing you to drink sodas, starbucks and eat unhealthy foods. The reason why some people are gaining weight in the states is only their own foods choices.

Ppl in the US buy frozen bc they dont buy food every single day to cook when they get home, like we see in other countries where its typical to pick up what youre going to need to cook evening meals when you get home on a daily basis. Much of The US is notoriously car-centric with strict zoning laws that buffer residential and commercial areas from each other so often times, ppl dont live close within walking distance of a market or grocery store, therefore trips are limited to once a week or in some cases only once or twice a month. Thats bc commercial stores such as Grocery stores arent allowed to be built in areas zoned as strictly residential, Alot of fresh food doesnt last that long between weekly or monthly trips to be used up properly before it spoils. Therefore a lot of food goes to waste. Not to mention alot of ppl within the US live within food deserts, which means the expense is higher to transport food from shop to home (fuel, public transit fare, time) Also Americans have notoriously intense work schedules that consist of long hours outside the home, that consumes energy and time that may have been spent on cooking and preparing meals. Frozen foods are compatible with Americans needs based on not having access to balanced work-life time split and not having access to walking distance stores that sell fresh produce. If we redesigned urban and suburban areas to be more walkable to grocery and market store destinations and allow work schedules to be more flexible and not to be 9-14 hrs long just to survive, you would likely see more Americans opt for fresh foods the same way the rest of the world does. PS: the fact that enough food to feed 950 million ppl goes to waste bc of poor storage is a disgrace.

People who say they don't like frozen food haven't had properly frozen food. I can have bags of vegetables, fruit, meat, whatever, all frozen for as long as I need it. When I'm ready to use it to make dinner or lunch, it's as good and fresh as it was the day it was frozen. Which tends to be extremely fresh because the volume these companies go through. Now that flash freezing is standard, frozen food is fantastic. I'm not talking about putting meat from the meat section in a refrigerator either. That still damages the meat because it's not flash frozen.

Cheap and laziness is the answer. Frozen veggies and berries are cheap because 1). It's easy to harvest and freeze the produce at the site of production itself 2). Size doesn't matter (odd shaped and not well grown are mixed with other well grown ones) 3). When the veggies are evenly cut it's easy pack them 4). Longer shelf life. They promote laziness because no need to wash or cut them - 1). Huge quantities are washed in a conveyor belt at the site of production itself 2). Machine sorted 3). Machine cut evenly Now don't ask me about nutritional content, processing and preservatives... (Even the frozen ones need some sort of preservatives).
