Putin should not have aided Donbas, but it was clear from years of statements written and in public he intended to invade which is why it was repeatedly stated he would. Even when Putin repeatedly said he would not, we knew he would. Sending insurgents into the region to destabilize it as a pretext to invasion was a clear sign as well as he's done in other regions. Zelenski and his predecessors should have taken the regional conflicts more serious from the start, not that it would have made a difference as Putin would have just escalated earlier.
