Why are people not getting married anymore?

89% of the world’s population now live in countries with falling rates. In the U.S., marriage has declined by 60% since the 1970s, while median age for first marriages has increased for both men and women.
“There are a couple of big factors here in play. One major factor is the changing economy”, said Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at University of Virginia.
The phenomenon affects many countries in the world but it’s most pressing in east and south Asia, where marriage and childbirth are highly correlated.
“Governments all over the world are worried because of economic implications”, said Dr Leng Leng Thang of National University of Singapore.
The decline of marriage is turning into a demographic crisis for Japan which is the world’s third largest economy and home to the world’s oldest population.
And a similar problem is troubling authorities in China, which registered the fewest marriages in 2022 since public records began.
“By 2050, China's working population will be reduced by 10%, and not enough babies will be born to fill that gap. The dependent population, those who reach retirement age, will double” warned Dr Ye Liu from King’s College London.
Watch the video above to learn what causes increasing number of couples around the world to opt out of marriage.

Experienced divorce attorney here. Marriage is simply too big a risk in modern times. Divorce and family court can derail your life, even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Better to live your best life and do the things that bring you joy. You can still have terrific relationships without inviting state laws into your life and finances.

Casual sex, and sex outside marriage are no longer taboo, so rushing to get married aged 18/19 just to get 'laid' (which was the case until the mid-20th century) no longer carries the same appeal. Dating apps and societal values encourage short-term casual relationships over long-term commitment.

That’s a very accountable attitude. Building with someone who is equally accountable and matches your values is key. Today, men are quite afraid of women with their lists of to do’s, love can get very lost when one partner takes over everything, leaving the other to follow or give all the decisions to the one who has the lists of goals and objectives, which leaves the partner cold & left out. It’s tough these days for men to marry.

So If I Imagine myself having kids, I'd have to work twice as hard to provide for their needs. I believe people have a better understanding what it takes to maintain a HEALTHY marriage and are being smarter about their approach so that means they’re getting married for different reasons and waiting longer to marry. The Bible states that “marriage should be honored by all” but there was no commandment for every human being to enter into marriage or childbirth. Grab her hand and ask her if she is already taken. Read some research, long term marriage is about companionship, not 5ex, not money, not anything else. In any case, we living being need loving companions. Those who don't have a human, go for pets .... and cry, because cats and dogs have much shorter life spans.

The decline of marriage isn’t just about the economic implications so often spouted. It’s also due to the way society is changing. Men: don't want to marry because of fear of divorce, alimony and child support --> solution is to sign pre-nup Women: don't want to marry because wives are often seen as primarily responsible for taking care of children and the house / household chores, may lose careers (especially in Asia), hence losing financial independence and freedom --> solution is to change society? A lot more difficult to do. Edit: the reasons mentioned in the video about men being less marriageable because of modern service-based economies apply. Lack of trust seem to be prevalent for both sides. Women --> feel that men are just interested in sex or taking advantage of them. Men --> feel that women are just interested in money or ripping the men off. Hence both genders steer clear from one another.

My grandmother stayed home and my grandfather worked. They went out to dinner twice a year. For their anniversary and on my grandmother's birthday so she didn't have to cook. When they went on 'vacation' it was to visit relatives so they had a place to stay for free. But people today think not having two cars, an ensuite bathroom and each child not having their own room is unacceptable. People could still easily live on one income if they chose to but they want more things.

When my husband and I met, we were honest about everything- what we both wanted (kids), what the financial situation was, anything else that we needed to know for the future. We didn't blindly fall in love and then go "hehehe let's get married!". There were practical considerations, like visa issues, to consider- we're from different countries and currently living in mine but plan to return to his. Without a spouse visa, it would be difficult to return. Plus in his country, children outside of marriage is frowned on.

Marriage is not worth the financial risk, nor the financial reality (nor the emotional angst, and I can say the same for having children too). I divorced over 20 years ago. It was one of the best financial and emotional decisions I made. Honestly, I hope this trend continues. The American government and US corporations need to realize they can only wrangle so much money from us before we change and adapt so living doesn't cost so much or have such a detrimental effect on our happiness. And the video stated governments are worried about the economic consequences....well, you could have helped to prevent this from coming by regulating the cost of goods and services so people can afford to marry, raise kids, and live decent lives!! But, nope, profit over people was the mindset of governments and corporations all over the world, and this is the result. Duh...it's not rocket science.

"u could have helped to prevent this from coming by regulating the cost of goods and services so people can afford to marry, raise kids, and live decent lives!" @@bromack3 It shouldn't be about incentives when it comes to marriage and having children andt to encourage population growth. It's about an individual having options available to them regardless of their decision to be married, not be married, or not to remain in a marriage where no happiness is to be found, or when it comes to deciding whether or not to have children. Marriage and children is too big of a commitment, a lifelong commitment when children are involved so no coercion of any type should be imposed on anyone

@@bromack3 There are no incentives for being an unmarried single mother. There is only financial government assistance. Why? Because America is a society that allows its males to impregnate a woman then walk away with no financial responsibility for the child. There is only a small amount of government assistance that ensures single women raising children live in poverty. And you're mad about that? You should compare the amount of money our government spends on assisting singles mothers vs. how much they fund for our military. The majority of our taxes go towards having the world's biggest military force. A military that is there for job and career purposes, mainly for the males of our country who can also use this to pay for college. But you're mad about a little assistance going to unmarried single mothers? Unbelievable!

Getting married in our day and age is simply the biggest blunder you can make as a man, it’s a trash deal with literally the risk of financial ruin, depression, endless divorce procedures, etc but almost zero upsides. Not to mention the global decline in the quality of women in the West.

She bought a wedding cake for this report instead of just checking the price 😅 I see.... During the end of my college semester, my friend asked me to be her bridesmaid, suddenly I realized that I have to spend my savings on her wedding. I was planning to visit Japan and see my family. So I told her I can't participate in her wedding buying special dress which only to be worn once and logistics and hotel etc. I went to Japan for the first time instead, I worked hard to save up for this bucket list. We haven't lost contact since. I don't understand why people want to drain friends budget on destination wedding, by forcing people to the place they like.

The biggest threat to the institution of marriage is increased personal autonomy, love of independence and financial freedom. People like being able to travel spontaneously, and not having to coordinate their affairs with another. People like being "unburdened" fromm having to buy that house (which is getting out of reach) and "settling down" to have children with a place where they have room to roam. More and more people are choosing themselves over the sacrifices inherent with getting married, being faithful, and raising children.

It’s a bad deal. Sex is free to women. Women make similar money but desire a man that makes more than her. She can access this man but it does not make sense to marry her as most women want him. The men women want see women as a liability and most women see most men as undesirable and most men either aren’t desired by their equal or gave up. Family court is another issue as it does not take into account new social norms and many times promotes behavior to take advantage of the system rather than support the growth of the people.

People were poorer back then, yet they still chose marriage. So, it's not so much about cost but rather the change in the value of marriage considering how broken the dating world is. People that live together before committing to marriage usually break up and never get married. This is why marriage is not a thing in modern society. The tradition of marriage provides a foundational path toward a long-lasting relationship. People nowadays just freely date and break up like it's a game.
