Why are people not getting married anymore?

89% of the world’s population now live in countries with falling rates. In the U.S., marriage has declined by 60% since the 1970s, while median age for first marriages has increased for both men and women.
“There are a couple of big factors here in play. One major factor is the changing economy”, said Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at University of Virginia.
The phenomenon affects many countries in the world but it’s most pressing in east and south Asia, where marriage and childbirth are highly correlated.
“Governments all over the world are worried because of economic implications”, said Dr Leng Leng Thang of National University of Singapore.
The decline of marriage is turning into a demographic crisis for Japan which is the world’s third largest economy and home to the world’s oldest population.
And a similar problem is troubling authorities in China, which registered the fewest marriages in 2022 since public records began.
“By 2050, China's working population will be reduced by 10%, and not enough babies will be born to fill that gap. The dependent population, those who reach retirement age, will double” warned Dr Ye Liu from King’s College London.

That’s a very accountable attitude. Building with someone who is equally accountable and matches your values is key. I always thought I'll have kids. My partner and I wanted to adopt at least 3 kids. But the expenses are so much, I can't even think of having kids.. it'll lock us in a financial lockdown for at least 2 decades. I had amazing parents and came from a beautiful loving home....and then one day they get a divorce and from 12 to 18 my household dynamics shift significantly. I remember how that felt, I remember how it made me view marriage, I remember how each member of our family's livelihood changed. So now at 32 I worked really hard to get to where I am today, it is extremely difficult to want to drive down that same road. Its very hard for the ones that come from divorced homes.

Actually Single Unmarried men dont need as much money. We arent consumers like that. Outside of Beer, Play Station, Netflix We dont have many expensses. We can do a studio or one bedroom. If we do exercise or work from home we may have a two bedroom We dont need two cars, its just us, so we buy one car. We have more options to spend less on rent, since we dont have to be concern with being SA like women do. We can do cheap rent no house. we have groups of guys that we can band together. Men who are single have less expenses.

Frankly, imagine if someone subtracted the beer and playstation and instead read books freely obtained from the library or via inexpensive on-line venders. Sat in a park and drank tea/coffee (maybe even made at home rather than an expensive coffee house). One of the most important reasons why I just decided to stay single is because of the unpredictability of my income flow. So If I Imagine myself having kids, I'd have to work twice as hard to provide for their needs. Personally I've seen that older generations' been marrying for all the wrong reasons, resulting in divorce and caused so much trauma in their children's lives. My wife through false allegations of child abuse tried to win divorce and put me into prison. She won temporary custody. After 3.5 years the court cleared me of initial accusation, but now my children who used to love me don't want to see me at all. The ex spouse didn’t get any punishment for false allegations. I’m a boomer and I was 32 when I got married and my husband was 36. The idea of getting married was always so odd to me, it was something my parents generation did not something I and my friends did. It took me a couple of years to get used to referring to someone as my husband. I got married when I was 22, divorced at 24. Very glad I experienced marriage while I was young, poor and stupid so now I don’t have to. I’m almost 39 now, own a successful business and there is no way I would risk a single dollar of it by getting married, worked way too hard for it! So my advice for young people is, get married while you have nothing, this way you’ll know your wife is not marrying you for your money or don’t do it at all, you won’t miss anything! You can have a serious relationship and kids without getting married.

It isn't the cost of living it is people's expectation of their standard of living. My grandparents had 8 kids. In a 3bed 1bath house. Only one car. My grandmother stayed home and my grandfather worked. They went out to dinner twice a year. For their anniversary and on my grandmother's birthday so she didn't have to cook. When they went on 'vacation' it was to visit relatives so they had a place to stay for free. But people today think not having two cars, an ensuite bathroom and each child not having their own room is unacceptable. People could still easily live on one income if they chose to but they want more things.

Thus, if there are fewer young people than there are old people, then young people could give their services to the highest bidder and have the retired folk compete for their services. Marriage only works if you're honest about it from the complete beginning. When my husband and I met, we were honest about everything- what we both wanted (kids), what the financial situation was, anything else that we needed to know for the future. We didn't blindly fall in love and then go "hehehe let's get married!". There were practical considerations, like visa issues, to consider- we're from different countries and currently living in mine but plan to return to his. Without a spouse visa, it would be difficult to return. Plus in his country, children outside of marriage is frowned on.

Marriage is not worth the financial risk, nor the financial reality (nor the emotional angst, and I can say the same for having children too). I divorced over 20 years ago. It was one of the best financial and emotional decisions I made. Honestly, I hope this trend continues. The American government and US corporations need to realize they can only wrangle so much money from us before we change and adapt so living doesn't cost so much or have such a detrimental effect on our happiness. And the video stated governments are worried about the economic consequences....well, you could have helped to prevent this from coming by regulating the cost of goods and services so people can afford to marry, raise kids, and live decent lives!! During the end of my college semester, my friend asked me to be her bridesmaid, suddenly I realized that I have to spend my savings on her wedding. I was planning to visit Japan and see my family. The biggest threat to the institution of marriage is increased personal autonomy, love of independence and financial freedom. People like being able to travel spontaneously, and not having to coordinate their affairs with another. It’s a bad deal. Sex is free to women. Women make similar money but desire a man that makes more than her. She can access this man but it does not make sense to marry her as most women want him.
