I like the mentioned fact that Charles de Gaulle was against the UK joining into the European project -in the reasons he stated he predicted literally everything that is worth considering as an issue! He was a truly a politician with great insights !

Of course. The UK government has played its EU status of "enfant terrible " to the absolute maximum with this Brexit farce. Events have come full circle where the UK has reprised its old role of "persona non grata " which it had before 1972 when de Gauille was no longer able to veto UK membership to the EEC as it was known at the time.

@@phyjcb Strange (or not?) how those most keen to stay in the EU are those of us who were either young children when we joined the EU (myself included and I voted to remain) or those who have been born since. Those of us born from the mid 1960's onwards have no memories of life in the UK before we joined the EU. I still hope some miracle will happen and we will, after all this palava, remain.

@mellowman1001 And yet Churchill's grandson who has been my local MP for some years now but stepping down (partly because he is retiring anyway but also he was one of the "21" back in September who voted against Boris and co) has always been a staunch EU supporter. We voted overall to remain in my area. Including myself and I would vote to stay again if another referendum comes up. As he said when the referendum result was announced - "the war finished 70 years ago".

The funny thing is, the UK was one of the nations pushing for the integration of these 2004 new memberstates. So the british people should first and foremost blame their own government. And the UK could always leave when further integration was discussed, however the british government always chose to stay. As for Cameron getting not enough concessions out of the EU (and the EU being stubborn), the UK already enjoyed a lot of concessions, eventually the EU had to draw a line and say "We can't give more concessions than what we proposed now if it is not enough, get out".

@@ilunga9489 I`m sad that Britain is leaving. Im afraid the British parlament and governament is as old as the EU`s, you know, its takes time to form a career, and the more you live the more knownledge you get, at least, supposedly. Also the European parlament is elected by the people, the european coucill in composed by the heads of states of the individual nations that were given a vote of confidence in their respective election and the european commission is apointed directly and indirectly by the coucil and as to be aproved by the parlament. The problem with give the say to the people in a european election is that they would most likely vote for their respective country representative or the closer to theirs, for example the smaller states would most likely lean towards a candidate from a smaller state and for example a candidate from a larger country their respective people would be more lean to vote fot them... Even tho I hope and it will most likely happen to have elected head to the EU by the people in the future, we arent that integrated yet or at least to an understanding to try and reduce the leanings by the voters. As to the superstate.. I do agree that eventually it would be good the all the EU countries including the UK to form an EU federation like the swidish federal system for example or maybe the US one.. You guys are the exact definition of this as the UK is actually comprised of a group of countries so why so mutch hate to the idea? As long as its well done there will be always benefits. Please think about this, do some research about european and world history and economics.. we have had enought of wars and cultural rivalries for centuries, the EU is a great idea, its not perfect now, like all other countries political systems or unions but we can make it better.

Can we have some more historical accuracy please. The story didn't begin in 1961, it began in the late 1940s, when Britain refused to join with the coal and steel community, which meant that the UK missed the boat on being a founder member of the EEC in the 50s. The EEC wasn't also known as the common market: the EEC had a common market, but it had a lot more than that. It wasn't a trading block. It was a political entity from the start, with the aim of preventing war by promoting prosperity through trade. I mean peace between European countries: not war between USA and USSR, neither of which are European but both of which chose our continent as one of the putative battlegrounds for their cold war. In terms of peace and prosperity, it has succeeded spectacularly

Guy Willetts they also forgot to include the 40+ years of lies, fear-mongering and how entitled the British (English) felt which was touted by The Sun, The Daily Telegraph and The Daily Mail. Add all of this to further loss of prestige from the dissolution of the empire with India being “the crown jewel” in 1947 and the necessity of allowing immigrants into the country after the huge loss of life from WW2... it was a perfect storm of events that was bound to explode in the way that it eventually did.

@paint 67 The problem is that Middle East has been destablized I don't think European professionals are stupid or ignorant they are completely competent speak English and are skilled individuals who are mostly spotless on the criminal records and pay their taxes and rents. Sadly West due to its ignorance tends to pry their noses where they should not be. For example Britain should not be taking parts in Global conflicts mostly because it is a waste of resources and soldiers. With Muslims Britain made many enemies now if you were neutral concerning Middle East and you did not allow Muslim immigrants different story . Well let me ask you this when has an European Citizen ever blown himself to pieces killing and harming multiple victims.Islam is bad because they will never assimilate to your culture the same is with Jews. Now let us inspect the British and Eu citizens most of them are all born and raised Christians. Most Europeans are White, Christian, and completely compatible with your culture. So there isn't any Marxism done only minor cultural differences tis all.I however understand Britain Marxism is evil and it is used to destroy a nation and their identity.

Where did Brexit come from? Start in 1975 when the 18+ year olds voted for the EEC. 41 years went by and those who voted for the EEC saw it morph into the EU, something they did not vote for and when the opportunity arose to have their say again, the now 59+ year olds voted to leave the EU. Let us also look at our out of touch politicians who wrongly believed the UK would not vote to leave the EU. Let us look at what the EU will turn into, the EU army, the Fiscal union, the surrender of sovereign powers to Brussels. Where did Brexit come from? The usual place, where politicians think they can do what they want and not what the people want them to do.

For years we have looked west for solutions to our problems, to the vastly different USAa continent with plenty of space and awash with natural resourcesnot a small wet, green island , rather than towards the European continent where those problems likely had already been solved by nations much more like the UK. Our railways are the best example but the road building programme of the 1960s is another. Thank goodness the 1945 Labour government kept to British solutions to health and welfare and gave us the NHS and the Welfare State. Both loathed by the Tory party which has looked to the US for economic inspiration since the 1980s

Few UK politicians propaganda of taking back the control doesn't clearly reflected the aftermath of brexit situation of UK. It would go bad for UK more than EU. Also this indeed increased of split within the union where Scotland who were in favor of stay would surely seek for independence post brexit, Northern Ireland want to be closer to Ireland then brexit mandate. what would happen if others in union (favor of stay in EU) would opt out of union and apply for EU membership. Clearly UK politicians have themselves to blame for not foreseeing these scenarios. While many of us (even me) predicted other members might follow UK and opt of EU in initial stage, I would say now with all this happening in UK, even Italy might have Second thoughts and would really opt to stay in EU.

De Gaulle was right about the UK and by the way, burocracy is everywhere also in GB. Real democracy does not exist, it is impossible. Once in 5 years the people can decide what "rough" direction the country is going (liberal, conservative, confessional, green, labour etc). Just after the election, MPs themselves decide what is good for the people and the country (Brexit is a nice exemple of this). When election approaches, MPs pick up again the sense of the people in order to stay (survive) in power. This is not a bad thing, it is a fact of life like death and taxes so grow up reflecting upon the existence of real democracy. Who is reading party programmes? 0,01% of the population? How good the British public is informed on the pro's and con's of the EU? Even less!!Do not forget, all western states are olygarchies and this can not be avoided or do you want to have 68 million MPs? . In the Netherlands politics is about compromising (poldering) , it is accepted that you can not always have what you want. However, this is possibly "a state of mind" the British do not embrace given the actual situation in the House of Parliament and the possition of the Scots and others in the Union?

We joined the common market after the French refused our application for joining lol, this idea of a butter mountain, beef and wine, products shared cheaply throughout the market was a great idea while changing the rest of the world a slightly higher rate, we never joined the EU and we should never have sold our NHS or our borders being an island nation, but we did all this and more, 10 billion a year cost from us the tax payer, now almost 4 years by Oct 31st 2019 we're leaving with or without a deal that's taking just 4 months to put together (how is this possible to write up a leave agreement that's impossible to have done in almost 4 years) So, on Oct 31st we're leaving with the worse deal in history because there's no way we're leaving with a no-deal eh

Brexit is a good idea but after the disaster and chaos in the British Parliament, we all know Britain cannot survive a Brexit. And I even do not mention here the problems with NI! But today the EU does not want that Britain join the EU because of this chaos and of this disaster Brexit is like poison for the EU - and this cannot destroy the UK but maybe the whole EU!😉

As usual, politicians talk out of the side of their mouths. They tell the citizens one thing, then do as they please. From what I gathered, the citizens have been unhappy for a long time with the EU. The influx of migrants further exacerbated the dissatisfaction. When Brussels basically tell the citizens whats going to happen in their country without their input - guess british pride and need for self rule belatedly raised its head. I have to admit this is a little like either the quest by Napoleon to rule Europe or that by Hitler to rule the world. The only difference is no guns and with consent of the politicians. But you can see the quest for centralized power in one place while the other politicians act like yes lackies. What happened to the working for the good of each countries citizens. Brussels might as well have the members say hi hi hitler. Hitler would invade and bomb, Brussels will sanctioned the uncooperative member to death because the citizens don't want to whistle their country down the drain on some narcissistic, egomaniacs power hungry dreams. I often wonder how politicians can sign their countries' future away, how can they sleep at night or look in the mirror at themselves; but as long as it does not directly affect them, they can live with anything I am an American and see the same disregard of the politicians for the citizens here as well. The only person who sees what is really happening is the everyday citizen who has to work hard to put food on the table and pay the bills. THERE HAS TO BE A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL FOR POLITICIANS WHERE THEY PAY FOR THE HELL THEY HAVE KNOWINGLY/INDIFFERENLY CAUSED OTHERS.
