From my experience machining Rene 88, Inconel 718, & Titanium T6 & T17 for rotating parts in aircraft engines. We ran some of our milling machines at 10,000 - 20,000 RPM with a depth of cut of .010 using both carbide end mils & TiN coated end mills. You could use either a carbide, or better, a TiN coated carbide end mill. I would also be using a flood coolant system to improve surface finish & chip removal. The TiN coated end mill will give you longer tool life before you have to have it reground. As you probably know, machining aluminum wears the cutting edge very fast since it is so soft compared to other metals so a faster feed rate works better. To speed up the process you can keep the RPM the same & change your depth of cut to .030-.050 running at .010 IPR leaving .030 stock on for a finish pass. This should be well within the capabilities of the milling machine. And you should be able to achieve at least a 63 to 90 surface finish. You might even be able to increase the spindle speed to 2500 RPM with the same .010 IPR feed rate if you don't run into any chatter problems. I would also start with the straight cut then do the profile. That way you would not have to deal with any blend issues if you have any. This is just my opinion.

I bought the CNC Baron. Really happy with results. My fixtures to hold my parts are usually my weak point. 3000 rpm limits my feedrates to about F60 It has a true 4axis capability.

The stand is not bolted down and the CAM is for more of a DOC then what would be best. I plan on re doing the setup in the neat future with a new cement base to quiet things down. It will have a built in column support too. Kind of a fun add on.

I don't have the G0704 up and running right now. There is lots of videos of the 704 out there. Its a good mill and many are happy with it. The PM-25 does come with the belt drive and brushless motor which is real nice and I didn't want to make a belt drive for the little mills just to get some spindle speed. Now that the PM-25 is broken in some I'm going to turn down the pulley a bit to get more speed from it. The question is how much. If I stay around 4k RPM then I can leave the stock TRB bearing in the spindle which I might do. Most of my CAM work is for the larger mill and 1/2" or larger cutter which will don't need 6K to do well but the best setup might be going for 6K RPM and using a 3/8" cutter. That would be a good reason to change to A/C bearings in the spindle. The head is exactly the same on the two mills and the column is about the same. The Z goes higher with the PM-25 and the 704 will allow the head to go lower do to the Z nut mounting. The PM-25 is a bolt on kit where the 704 you have to mill a pocket for the X nut.

This was just a simple test cut and the mill was not even bolted down and no chip recovery. I used WD40. With the mill properly bolted down and all the slides properly set I could mill much faster. I had a ring from the stand that was bad so I just went super slow. Kits for sale at ArizonaCNCkits.com Thanks Dave

What is going on at 6:52? When the table moves quickly it's as though the whole thing changes geometry and then slowly comes back into normal perspective.

It looks like it was at the end of a pass, went to clearance height and performed a rapid to the start of the next pass (see 9:37 for another example).

Question. Why did you tool path cut 1 piece at a time? I would think that one would cut all the pieces on the same path/depth. I am not a true machinist, but I can a machine or 2. CNC and manual. Is that an aluminum cylinder head cut in half for the bed? If so, Yeah recycle those auto parts!
@ArizonaVideo99
@ArizonaVideo99 5 жыл бұрын
You can do it both ways. It depends on how you want the chip clearing to go. Sometimes with level first that leaves more pockets for chips. This was not code for the 25 mill anyhow. I had to really slow down the feeds. The mill can do better with a smaller cutter and less DOC and faster feeds. Thanks Dave

Curious if you've ever had a power outage while milling? If so, what issues it has caused while machining with a CNC set up? Thank you.

I have good power in this part of Phoenix. If I see a really big storm I don't to a big run. If you do loose power everything just stops and you would have to re zero and start the code from the last op. If you have a ruffing clearance you might not even trash the part.

Thanks for all your videos! The question is - what are the final tolerances you were able to reach on aluminum parts? Sorry I am new to milling machines. With right choice of CNC conversion kit, high quality of the tools, collets, vises, etc, is it possibile to hit +-0.001" profile tolerance in all XYZ axes on brass parts that have overall dimensions of 1"x1"x3" using this PM-25MV with CNC? Thank you!

I would say no. A $50,000 VMC can't do that most the time without special setup like probing. I would say with a little practice you can get to .005". Below that every little thing mater so much.
@dominic6634
@dominic6634 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArizonaVideo99 actually you should be able to hit within .001 with a HAAS or Mori no problem (you don't need a probe just an indicator or good edge finder). If your not its a machining strategy problem or the machine is out of wack. with a CNC conversion with a hobby machine you looking at about .005 or .010 depending the the machine. A Bridgeport conversion should be able to do about .001

can you do a comparison video of the precision matthews vs a grizzly mill
@glennedward2201
@glennedward2201 6 жыл бұрын
cbeck611 I own both PM and Grizzly. Larger machines and both have there points. I will be quite honest my Grizzly g0761 is far more precise than my PM833t and my Grizzly has had far less issues with it. Only thing the Pm has is a better casting and no slop in the column dovetails. Both are rf45 type machines. The PM has far more table travel but the grizzly can also be modified. Frankly for what I spent 1/2 the money on my Grizzly it is superior in cut quality to the PM out of crate. Currently I am converting my PM to CNC because the manual machine is so terrible.

Even if you turn the RPMs up to 6K that still seems really slow. We mill AL @ 16K and 600"/min. It doesn't seem like the forces on the mill would be much greater since it is the chip load & accelerations that govern that. The controller/software would need to have appropriate ramp accelerations built in. How hard can the PM-25 be pushed?

Hi Matt. I do kits for both the PM-25 and PM-30, the 30 is dont but not in production but will be. I like the 30 for its size, its a really nice larger mill at 460 pounds. Feel free to email any questions. You can see more pictures here. Do it all your self There are so many cnc videos online Step by step If you are converting one you should be able to mill a few motor mounts. Buy nema 34s acme thread 3 power suplys 3 stepper drives 3 stepper motors mach 4 and you're all set to go $400 at the most DO NOT BUY A CONVERSION KIT They rob you badly they charge 3-5 Grand for a kit they will cost you only a couple hundred if you part it out. If someone cant mill some stepper mottor mounts then why do they have a mill in the first place If you have a lathe even better make your own threaded rod.
