Spent my career looking to make smaller and smaller more precise parts, ended up as a grinder hand making laminate and connector mold inserts. A part 1/3rd the size of a pencil would have been considered huge, and + -.0002 would have been considered an open tolerance. I'll be seeing this in my nightmares tonight.

@@heir6289 surface speed could be increased as its on the low side if its mild steel, change roughing insert for an edge saver, which will allow to increase depth of cut
@heir62893 жыл бұрын
@@andrewtaylor5962 Is it mild steel? Can you tell the surface speed from this video? I admit I have no idea what an edge saver is but it seems to me they have the material chipping nicely for each cut depth we see here. The main roughing uses most of the insert cutting edge so if there are two roughing passes you would need to double this depth in order to get your 50% reduction in time. I'd say these people know their job very well. I'd still be interested in knowing what an edge saver is though - maybe it's called something else here (Australia).

@@andrewtaylor5962 It's 4150 Q&T at around 320 Brinell. You do realize this thing weighs 3000 lbs (1360 kg) and I don't know about you, but at this weight I like to keep my rpms on the lower end and this lathe only has 600 rpm max, so you can't really go crazy. The DOC is 0.350" (8.89mm) FEED 0.020 IPR (0.508 mm/rev). You said you could cut about 50% man, I'm listening.

I'm still trying to figure out how it's turning so true with pre-drilled center holes. At first I thought you'd run it thru the spindle to finish the opposite end but was surprised to see it finished all that way opposite of the chuck, especially without a steady rest. Impressive stuff dude.

You can't see it on a video, but I did flipped that part four times and turning between two centers also helps.

It's not clear that's actually a CNC lathe / turning center. Pretty doubtful. If it is, then it's a fabuous waste of CNC because the same job could be done so easily with a manual machine. There's no good justification for using CNC for simple stuff that can be so easily jigged and done by hand.
@ChrisMaj Жыл бұрын
0:35, 3:23 if that's not clear I don't think I want to argue with you. By the way, we only have couple manual machines, large lathe and a vtl. So I'm using what I got.
@timhofstetter5654 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaj I see nothing telling at 0:35. I see a big DRO at 3:23. I see a giant manual lathe that may or may not have been "CNCized" but that (if it has been) could easily be operated manually, as it was designed to be operated when it was built. Me, I believe I'd decommission the CNCization if it's been done and set it up to use jigs instead. It's just so much simpler and doing so costs nothing. But that's me. Maybe you have something more profitable to do with your time.
