It’s become abundantly apparent that every soviet era apartment, school, hospital, factory and government building has a network of bunkers and bomb shelters beneath them. If this is true of regular towns in Ukraine then it is certainly true of Russian towns and cities in Russia. I’ve lived in many countries in Europe, England and America and I’m not aware of any bomb shelters other than some parts of London Underground and private ones owned by a few “preppers”. If this escalates to where it’s going, my money is on Russia coming out the other side in better condition!

On May 16 as part of a complex series of strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kiev the Russian Air Force employed the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missile to neutralise a unit from an American Patriot air defence system, destroying its a radar and a control centre and reportedly at least one of its launchers. According to sources, the Ukrainian crew operating the Patriot were aware a strike was incoming, but had only a limited warning time due to the Kinzhal missile’s very high speed - limiting opportunities for the missile system to change position or reload. The Patriot system targeted was one of two delivered, with Germany and the United States having each supplied a single unit. The unit reportedly fired 32 surface to air missiles at the Kinzhal on approach, which at approximately $3 million each amounted to a $96 million barrage to attempt to destroy a missile with an estimated cost of under $2 million.The Kizhal missile used to neutralise the Patriot battery entered service in the Russian Military in late 2017, and was first employed in the Russian-Ukrainian War on March 18 2022 to strike a large underground warehouse in Western Ukraine housing armaments recently delivered through Poland.

I think someone needs to look at it this way: the cost of the munitions fired by Russia may be the retail value. But if they have invested in factories that can build missiles for material cost; the cost of missiles will be much less that the full retail price. I think the winning strategy is to make sure you have invested enough in production capacity, and when you can produce more then the opposition, you can win. Russia also has the manpower advantage. This conflict will be won by the side that can produce the most equipment. At least its a big part of victory. Training of troops can not be underestimated either. The best doctrines on how to fight war is also part of that. I don't think the war is won yet. There are some major battles to be fought. Russia does have some things going for them, but I'm not sure if they know how to exploit the advantages of more manpower, and more resources in the fast, huge country they have. Very interesting to see the situation materialize and develop during the months. Ive read me some good books on tactics, and this summer, I will be reading some more doctrine books. I will go on with reading on company tactics, after that battalion tactics, after that on brigade tactics, after that on division tactics, and after that on corps tactics. Including all the field manuals mentioned in the text. Yes, I know how this military stuff works. And from the looks of it Ukraine is getting better and better at tactics. If they keep up the good hard work, we as the west will win this war. Together we can make this happen. Greetings, Jeff

I wish the countries allied with Ukraine would change the goal from the vague “as long as it takes”, whatever that means, to “Ukraine victory as soon as possible in 2023.” It’s going to cost everyone more if this thing is dragged out than if it’s ended quickly with the right outcome. And that cost is not just money, inflation and suffering but tens of thousands of lives. Even Russian invader destroyer lives. With that as a goal we can provide them whatever they need to destroy all Russians forgives in Ukraine. Give them the long distance capability to strike them in Crimea and to hit them in Russia. Ukraine shouldn’t be handicapped because they are the aggressor and they are on the wrong side of history. No reasonable person can argue they don’t have a right to defend their sovereign territory.

Don't be surprised if things start ramping up from NATO and the US. The only thing keeping them at bay so far was Russias threat of nukes on hypersonic missiles.
