They took data from a 2008 study, which found there was no accurate method of determining indirect deaths. 3. The 186,000 was plucked out of thin air. They simply multiplied the current death toll (which is a mixture of civilians and combatants) by four 4. On 8th July, the co-author, Martin McKee, wrote that the number they came up with was "purely illustrative". He also said that "our piece has been greatly misquoted and misinterpreted".
