The very first thing to point out would be that much of what Israel calls Northern Israel is, in fact, in the Golan Heights, which is part of Syria, and Shebaa Farms which is part of Lebanon. It was Shebaa Farms, not Northern Israel, which Hezbollah initially attacked. Of course the conflict has since widened considerably.
