White women benefit from Affirmative Action more than any other demographic in America... But this is a discussion about universities... that being said, merit-based programs are the norm, no minority goes to Harvard just because they’re “Black” and submitted an application, they have proved their proficiency and their academic excellence as being substantial. THAT being said, many of the “power” positions are held by White people who may be tempted to give preference to other “team-mates”... affirmative action ensures that there is some type of check/balance to the decision process. Often times, as we ALL know... it’s not what you know but who you know... so merit has ALWAYS been secondary to preference and favoritism. He should have countered by asking: Where do the blacks students admintted by AA rank in their class?, How many graduate in their chosen field as opposed to having changed to a less competitive major to keep up? Often-cited examples of race-blind meritocracy are New York City’s elite public schools, such as Stuyvesant High School, for which admission is based solely on a standardized test. Stuyvesant is about 74 percent Asian, 18 percent white, 3 percent Hispanic, 1 percent black, with 4 percent multiracial or other. In California, where race-based affirmative action was eliminated in 1996, admission at the University of California at Berkeley is 42 percent Asian. That is what the administration is fighting - too many Asians. Since it’s evident that Affirmative Action has benefited WHITE WOMEN the most, not necessarily people of color. While the term “model minority” substantiates a myth about how whites value Asians, Asians are only “model minorities” when they are small in number with minimal influence on a community. When Asians “set the norms of academic achievement by which whites are evaluated [and] ultimately usurp those previously in place,” once heralded Asian achievements are critiqued with suspicion.

The truth of the matter is that race is only one consideration for admissions and not the only. The problem isn't with Affirmative Action as according to reports Asian students WERE REJECTED B/C THEY SCORED LOW ON THE PERSONALITY TRAIT area of the Harvard admissions criteria, so they filed a lawsuit and decided to attack Affirmative Action (which they did not fight for but have benefitted from...) with a false narrative of being shut out due to the unqualified Black students. They (Asians) want to repeat the success of their UCLA challenge where A/A was repealed and Asians are now accepted on a higher percentage second only to Whites. I always hear the "just be a better..." argument. But let us wake up to the fact that the American Educational system is ripe with widespread cheating, threatening, and cajoling for better grades....(Just look at the sad/funny fact-based meme's where parents used to yell at the child when they received poor grades, now they yell at the teacher) a HIGH GPA means squat if you can get your child's teacher to raise the grades a few percentage points (from 84% to 98%+). Asians want schools to only consider areas where they excel which are testing and GPA, and for admissions to no longer be holistic and considering culture, personality, etc...To be good at test taking requires cram schools, prep courses and practice, therefore, it does not serve as the best indicator of being a good well-rounded student and it does not mean that you are smarter...most people haven't been groomed to pass a test, but are still intelligent...point made. I agree that if U.S. has done something special against the Black American to hold us back (slavery-Jim crow 100 years of discrimination through violence and terror), it must now do something special to remedy that situation (MLK). I find it hilarious that 54years of Civil rights/Voting Rights/Affirmative Action is a problem, but 250years of Slavery = forced labor + denial of pattens and 100years of Jim Crow is alright but after only 54 years our time of "special treatment" should be up! lol!! Lastly, this ties into illegal immigration and legal immigration and the need to curb both as the same people who have benefited off of the backs of Black folks marching, dying and fighting, to obtain a few civil rights are now working feverishly to dismantle them so their kids and grandkids can get ahead. Also, we need to undo birthright citizenship and reduce HB-1 visas. I am with the President on matters of Immigration as it has proven to hurt the Black community and here is yet another example...

As an Asian American high school senior currently applying to college, I will have to disagree. Statistics show that Asian Americans actually score the same or higher on the personality scale by college alumni interviewers, and are the only race where the difference between personality rating between the interviewers and admissions officers is significantly large. I agree that test scores shouldn’t be the only factor, but isn’t it just a little fishy that admissions officers, who never meet the Asian American applicants, score them lower on the personality scale than interviewers, who do meet them?
@gonosol6 жыл бұрын
Also, on the point of standardized tests. I know that, in a perfect society, there would be no need for tests. But in a country of 300 million people, how else can we have a way to quantify the skills of applicants? And the truth is, smarter people tend to score higher on the SAT/ACT, regardless of how much they study. I’ve seen people work their asses off studying and get lower scores than people who are simply smart and fast. It’s not fair, but then again, there’s no other way.

As far as I'm concerned, a totally merit based system is fine, perhaps not even having the name on the application would help remove the chance of stigma as well. However, if you want the best students to be given a chance, there should be a system in place such that any student who works hard in high school and scores well can go to college, no matter whether or not their parents can afford it. Society benefits from the best students becoming doctors or lawyers or simply getting an education and applying themselves. Whether it's a white kid from a trailer park or a brown kid from the inner city, if they worked hard enough and showed they have potential, they should be given a chance.

Problem with this is the school and circumstances are not fair from the start how the hell can a impoverish kid from a impoverish school compete with affluent kids who have better schools equipment, tutors, teachers after school programs, plus not burden with survival, have to work to help parents stay afloat, can’t study lights cut off etc? And those affluent kids got ahead because of centuries of privilege and discrimination of others ???
@twystedhumour Жыл бұрын
@@tracer073 By having parents there who don't give a damn about other's social status and only worrying about giving that child the time to teach them and setting standards for that child in academics. The problem with your approach is that you always look to others on your achievement, and allowing that to blind you to the work that has to be done in front of you. I came from a poor family, strove to get the highest grades that I could. If I got the highest grade in class, then OK; if I didn't, then I strive harder in the next class. Studying without electricity? Simple: take advantage of the natural light, and then study by candlelight. I've done that before. What, you can't come up with simple solutions and make do with what you have? That's called "resilience," something you learn from your elders.

Anyone against affirmative action doesnt know what it is. What was in place before affirmative action? White supremacy in hiring, admission, etc. It didnt matter how qualified the black candidate and how unqualified the non black candidate was, they werent hired. Affirmative action meant giving priority to qualified black people in positions/schools they were historically denied access. It wasnt a "hire & enroll them because theyre black" policy. They wouldnt be hired/enrolled if there wasnt any affirmative action protecting them against discrimination.

What I never hear anyone talk about when it comes to affirmative action is these students competency not only after graduation, but throughout their 4 years at university. If universities are accepting students that if based solely on test scores and not on race wouldn’t make the cut to be accepted... how are those particular students going to realistically do academically once they actually get in? If they can’t even pass the initial entry exams, are they not just being set up to fail when being put into classes that are too difficult for them and years of exams that they cannot pass with all their fellow students who where accepted based on them passing their entry exams? I don’t think people who argue for affirmative action give this enough (or any) thought. They just think about getting them IN the door, but what about not being up to par for the work that’s ahead of them for the next four years? Obviously there are necessary reasons for entry exams in the first place. That’s how the admissions department knows who is and who is NOT ready for university. If a person does not have the smarts to pass authentically and they are pushed through anyways, your not doing them any favours!
