I really appreciated the thoughtful and respectful exchange between Michael Eric Dyson and Bill Maher on this topic. I think in some ways they were talking past one another, as Dyson is calling for a moral paradigm where Palestinian and Israeli lives are equally valued while Maher is questioning the realism of that paradigm in light of the threat of Hamas (which values neither Israeli nor Palestinian lives) which needs to be eradicated and can’t be without civilian casualties. This kind of exchange is one we need more of on tv, where most media is either reflexively anti-Israel or pro-Israel without asking the deeper questions these two do here.

I think Maher's position was: historically our country has gone to war and accepted civilian causalities as part of a larger goal. I'll take Maher's position for him for the sake of a deeper discussion and understanding. During WWII, Germany's goal was rid the world of Jews and take over Europe and beyond. The US engaged to stop them. We (US) bombed the hell out of German cities including: Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg and numerous others. Obviously there were tremendous civilian casualties, but it was in service of a larger goal to prevent Nazi world dominance and the elimination of Jews. Do you think we should have chosen a different strategy in order to protect the hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians? Were Americans war criminals? My father was one of the active soldiers who fought to achieve the military goals. Should the US soldiers be considered accessories in war crimes? What would have happened if the US and allies didn't take this approach? How would you further argue your case?

"What war did we have where we were only killing the soliders" - just because something has happened doesn't meant it's good. Targeting of civilians is a war crime. The indiscriminate bombings of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria have not produced beneficial outcomes for the US and have all but ensured terrorist, Islamist, and totalitarian supremacy in those regions because it engendered a fundamental distrust towards the US. The civilian massacres of the Vietnam War certainly didn't help the US win that conflict. An attack on civilians during the Gulf War by the US coalition was used by Hussein to garner support from other countries though he was thankfully unsuccessful. In World War II the Blitz didn't lead to British surrender but likewise the bombing of German urban centres did nothing but kill German civilians - it was only when military infrastructure was targeted (particularly the oil supplies for German tanks) that any ground was gained. History says we have killed civilians in wars, and it has never been helpful or justified at a strategic level, let alone a moral one. But Bill doesn't like moral nuance for all he claims other people don't see nuance when it's about things that affect him.

Dyson got his number of Plasteline casualty wrong without understanding that the # included 15K dead terrorist's and these killed by Jihad/Hamas in Gaza (like in the case of the so claimed 500 dead in Al-Ahli hospital done by Jihad, Hamas and media wrongfully blamed Israel for it. NYT had to apologize for its mis-reporting). Even Hamas dare not to label 35K as all civilian death, neither did UN. BTW, Hamas/UN just cut the casualty numbers by half for Children and women. The problem is the wrong description of the 34K has been reported and said and used by reporters and politicians to bash Israel and make policy/legal decisions. Mis-information and ignorance is one of the most dangerous thing that threatens democracy. We need to call all quoiting Hamas numbers and criticizing Israel, and these unwittingly supporting Hamas to study the series of Israel/Hamas wars and middle east history going back at least to the Ottoman empire, And read these articles to get facts from the leading experts: m.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-801461 m.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-800985 www.newsweek.com/israel-has-created-new-standard-urban-warfare-why-will-no-one-admit-it-opinion-1883286

Bill Maher prides himself on providing a platform for a broad range of conflicting and competing views on current political and social issues. Yet his behavior does not always reflect this view he has of himself. This was clearly evident in the way that Maher repeatedly interrupted Michael Eric Dyson when he was provided a nuanced view on the war in Gaza and the pro-Palestinian protests. Regardless of whether or not one agrees with Dyson's views, Maher clearly needs to improve his listening skills. As someone who regularly views Realtime, Maher's views on the war in Gaza are well known, as he regularly recites them. I really wanted to hear Dyson's full explanation. Unfortunately, Maher was all too eager to interrupt and cut him off.
