20.000 feet is an extremely dangerous altitude to have a larger object moving around at in US air space. It is a great danger for commercial aircrafts and could have caused a very serious plane crash with hundreds of dead, and in worst case scenario, made the plane crash down into a heavily populated area. The reason we're worried about surveillance now and never were before isn't because our tracking capabilities suck. In a press conference an official said "there is a lot of junk up there" So we can see stuff just fine. It's because the US was part of the Open Skies Treaty where it gave consent to other members of that treaty to allow unarmed foreign surveillance aircraft other its territory. Trump withdrew from the Treaty in 2020 which is why we're being more defensive of airspace today. Even under the treaty, China was never part of it, so we still might be shooting it down if we knew it was theirs and even though it's flying high enough not to be dangerous.

Military assets are always armed with a self-destruct device to prevent the enemy from using it. Normally, the asset is captured and then contained at the enemy base, when the device explodes and hopefully destroys part of or all of the enemy's base and its military personnel.

It would be naive to suggest the us doesn’t also engage in the almost constant invasion of our adversaries sovereign airspace as well.
