I'm really shocked more people haven't subscribed to you. You are a beast John and a huge inspiration! My dad and I do a 150ish mile trip every summer and I showed him your CDT playlist which he loved! So we did the Wind River Range and Glacier National Park section of the CDT this summer. Keep up all the awesome work!

John Z logic. Uhh I'm kinda tired and my body needs to recover. Let's just keep hiking another 200+ miles and slow it down to a regular backpackers jog. Haha keep it up John. Love the videos.

I've never hitch hiked before. So I'm trying to understand the nuances of the driver/hitcher relationship. Is there any expectation that you'll give the driver some $$$. Or is it understood your riding for free? Do you tell them where your going? Or just a direction?

The JMT is Mt. Whitney to the trailhead in Yosemite.. Did you count the miles from Whitney portal to the summit??
@mdmustang3028 жыл бұрын
Just curious if those miles from the portal to the summit are included in the FKT times?
@JohnZahorian8 жыл бұрын
+mdmustang302 yes. Andrew told me it was parking lot to parking lot like 2 days before it started. Blew my mind when I saw that on the proboard but never noticed

I looooove that you went for the JMT speed record. I hiked it southbound last summer in 18 days. As you probably know, soundbound would be MUCH more realistic to fastpack, as you are slowly acclimating, but you really gotta be lucky to score a permit from happy isles in LYV. I got it on my 2nd try through the lottery system, but i know many people who have been trying for years. Attempt number 2?! Would love to re-live the trail through you lol.
@JohnZahorian8 жыл бұрын
you're mistaken regarding nobo vs sobo for a jmt fkt
@nickofnorth97158 жыл бұрын
John Zahorian after looking around online i can see that you're right, most (if not all) of the fkt attemptee's started from whitney. Seems wierd to me to start at 6000ft and climb so high so quickly instead of 4000ft and gradually increase your elevation. Though, thinking deeper, I guess it's probably much easier to crush the harder passes like mather, glen and forester from the south side heading north, making for a quicker overall time.
@JohnZahorian8 жыл бұрын
yosemite valley to cathedral pass is also 6000'. whitney portal is 4000' higher than yosemite valley. southern end has the longer climbs. northern end generally feels more mellow

3 hours and 43 minutes to the Whitney summit. That's super duper fast, John... Wow... (You're an hour faster than me... Holy macro... can't even imagine what it is like...) Too bad your heart was in it. And rest is important too, I agree. Hope you achieve a JMT FKT goal when you want to do it again. Cheers!

John what jobs do you do to save up? Surely you're not doing mechanical engineering for 6 months at a time? Do you just do simple work like gas station attendant for 6 months or do you actually find jobs in your field?

Also can you give us an idea of how much a year of your lifestyle costs you? Good luck John thanks for the videos!
@michaelb17618 жыл бұрын
I didn't hear you, but I take it that you just slowed down from superhuman fast to just fast and finished the JMT at a slower pace? Did you resupply out of the hiker buckets at MTR and/or VVR? Seems that would be difficult for someone who is vegetarian and needs to be a little more particular about his food than your average hiker. I guess there is a lot of trail mix in those though; I know I contributed 1 lb when I was there a couple years ago. Now I know better.
@TaxationIsTheft694208 жыл бұрын
How the heck did you get a permit for the JMT just like that? I still cannot understand how you are able to do these things.
@michaelb17618 жыл бұрын
He got a permit to hike northbound. The difficulty there is getting a Whitney Summit permit, though that is much easier than getting a permit for the JMT. Most people hike the JMT southbound because they don't want to start with Mt Whitney and Forester Pass. Silly people worrying about altitude sickness and not being in top shape at the beginning. ;-)
@TaxationIsTheft694208 жыл бұрын
Michael Burgess Got it. So if I applied for a northbound permit online, I have a much better chance? How does that affect halfdome permits.
@michaelb17618 жыл бұрын
Ethan S I've never gone northbound, but I imagine it makes it more difficult to reserve a permit ahead of time since it will be difficult to know the day that you will finish. Then I think you would need to finish the hike, pick up your permit, then hike back to Half Dome. I could be wrong though. It's not something that I've ever considered. I did the JMT southbound in 2015. Once was enough for me. It showed me how beautiful the Sierra is. Now I'm working on routes that hit the sites off the JMT that I didn't get to see in my 2 weeks on the JMT. If you don't get a JMT permit, make your own route and reserve a permit leaving from one of the less popular trailheads where you can actually get permits.
