2022 I really enjoyed share my base weight,also it easier too compared too other hiker know how to improve,base weight will be around 6-9lbs,I don't have money to buy all the gear and test it,so if I found some gear I never used I will carry it for a while,and gear like extra clothes I will only used for very short term,I will choose cheap DG stuff and put it in hikerbox after I don't need it,like two rain jackets I use it too creat vapor barrier for extra warmth but smaller volume

I like how he doesn't take things too seriously. He makes it exciting and fun. His habits would be similar to what my grandparents taught me. Waste absolutely nothing. Find a way to make it work, don't just buy on a whim. I needed that reminder.

Gearlist: * 20L backpack with diy foam padding added and extra paracord to hold things, messages from other people written on the bag. * Small 500ml water bottle and diy bottle sleeve * One treking pole (broken but still usable for holding up a tarp) * DIY tarp copied from 'pocket tarp' - used sketchup to fit the dimensions to his height so the tarp is the smallest practical size. * Tent stakes but has only a few left because he gave them away to others in need since he wasn't using them often. * X-lite short sleeping pad from a hiker box. It has a small leak so he has to refill it once or twice while using it. * Sleeping bag with bivy, bivy is copied from bora gear. Sleeping bag has bug netting on the end. His hat brim keeps the net off his face so the bugs can't bite through it. * Belt bag carries 1L water bottle * Handmade wood spoon * nail clippers * Platypus water bag cut in half is used as a bowl for cold soaking food. * permanet marker and paper to leave messages for friends hiking up behind. * Zip ties to quickly attach stuff to his bag or other things. Food: One bag with everything sweet mixed together and one bag with everything salty mixed together. For example dehydrated mashed potato and couscous and cocao powder and oats. Sometimes has chocolate milk in his small bottle. He can carry up to 5 days of food but first 2 days his sleeping bag is tied to the top of his pack on the outside. Clothes: Brimed hat, glasses, sandles, trail running shoes, socks, 2 shirts - alpha direct fleece, shorts (underwear too I'm guessing but obviously not shown 😅)

I have a really bad back and miss hiking and camping so I've been looking into ultra-light hiking because the max weight I can even safely carry is like 15kg. Maybe that's not doable and I will have to do bikepacking or have some sort of hiking cart if those exist.

So Im getitng back into hiking / backpacking after a long time away mostly due to hating anything that resembles "Rucking" because the ARMY can ruin anything. But this, this guy, its just amazing. This is someone to sit and talk to just, like you did, his story, his gear, its all so unique to him. Not that fake kinda unique you see all over the place. So interesting, I think he's the first "Ultra Minimalist" backpacker I've seen.

That bowl idea is top notch. It’s so lightweight. I need to do something like that.
@jeromebullard61232 ай бұрын
I don’t get why people make it some sort of competition to see how light they can pack. Pack only what you need and you’ll be fine. Everyone has a different comfort level for weight. My 20lbs might feel like 600lbs to you.

I feel like I can relate to that guy, in some ways. I was raised in a forest/steppe area where it gets extremely cold in winter. My parents encouraged me to learn foraging, primitive tool making, and problem-solving skills in nature when I was a child. I was also involved in farming, so that created the ability to pace effectively. And farming takes grit, especially in winter. I am unorthodox. I wear wool and linen clothing (season-dependent) and sometimes go barefoot (heavily-calloused feet). For a day, I'll take a satchel with some little essentials and a canteen. For long distances, a small Swiss military rucksack. Wool blanket. My little cooking pot. Dried meat and hardtack. Posca in the canteen (electrolytes). Water filter. Purposely having extra body fat helps. After all, my ancestors came from a place where starvation was common. Just looking at food makes us fat. I understand the appeal of the modern lightweight gear, however. I'd even invest in it if it weren't so expensive. I just go with what I know. I'm accustomed to it.
@augustinnch2 ай бұрын
Amazing interviews! It is so refreshing to be reminded you do not need extra expensive stuff to be light or hike, you just need to adapt
