They missed the best part..before the Olympics took place the US Olympic team went up against NBA All-Star team that included Magic Bird and Isah... and the Olympic team (all college kids including Jordan) WON ALL 8 GAMES by a significant margin including an embarrassing 128-106... Bobby Knight said those words before Jordan made even a single dribble in the NBA... and the fact that Jordan was that good before his NBA career shows why he was able to dominate the NBA for his whole career and become the undisputed GOAT of all sports

As they would say, he got ìt from his mother. Deloris Jordan was a college educated woman in the segregated South. Bank manager.. Her baby boy who chose the best for him. Michael wanted to sign with Adidas and he was rejected. Phil Knight came in and offered 5% ownership which he still gets today. Her HSBC education paid off. So proud of Mrs Jordan. Mŕ.Jordan was a laborer. MJ came from a 2 parent working income. Plus a lot of love. Church on Sunday. Very proud. ❤

I was fortunate to know Coach and play some golf with him. Part of our golf led to conversations about the '84 Olympic Team. When I asked him why Charles Barkley didn't make the team he said it was simple. We asked him to lose 9 pounds and he gained 11. As for John Stockton, he said he simply couldn't put the ball in the basket. His shooting wasn't good enough at that point in his career. But the best comment was when I asked him who was the best basketball player he ever coached he looked at me with a grin and stated Michael Jordan and it wasn't even close!

How could you hate a guy that does his job perfectly -- forget the fame and media -- just the overall ability, work-ethic, discipline, attention to detail, efficiency, and overall ability to be coached as Michael Jordan being praised by Bobby Knight, a basketball genius, it shows this man Jordan really understood what he was doing and how to constantly improve while helping and enabling his team to win...not just him but all of his teammates on that 1984 Olympic Team winning gold -- wonderful.

@@jeffreywong3155 Yeah, you have to be a well-rounded player to win, same thing Jordan had to learn in Chicago .... Jordan was a very talented yet selfish player so he had to learn the dynamics of breaking down an opponent from a team concept .... The ONLY team he has yet to figure out where the Pistons because when the Pistons came along the NBA had to step in and enable the Bulls to win that series in 1991 and guess what? The Pistons themselves were in on it because their scorers did NOT shoot (Thomas - 9 shots in game 1 and 9 shots in game 2; Laimbeer - 7 shots in game 1, 2 shots in game 2; Dumars 10 shots in game 1, 10 shots in game 3) and Chuck Daly didn't play his front court (Salley, 9 minutes in game 2; Edwards 11 minutes in game 2 and just 9 in game 3) major minutes and the refs did their job by giving Chicago a 117-76 foul shot attempt advantage from games 1-3 (just go look at the stats) .... Then the Pistons broke up their team in the summer of '91 by waiving Vinnie Johnson and trading James Edwards to the Clippers, never enabling the Pistons to compete again for titles .... So guess who keeps winning?

The thing with this story isn't even about MJ's basketball skills... it's about how fast his brain worked. How many guys would come up with comebacks as quick as he did ALL the time. He was still a child here and his brain was 1000 steps ahead coming up with that response to Bobby Knight. Look at his Tex Winter line about no I in team... or when Jerry Reinsdorf brought up the 10 pills for a headache with one being laced with cyanide. MJ was just wired differently.

I remember on the book The Jordan Rules, there was a story about Gary Payton. Payton told MJ now that he’s in the league he can get everything MJ has. MJ turned to him and said, “ The difference between me and you is that I get all my stuff for free”. Even though MJ got the best of him, he was reportedly pissed that a rookie stepped to him like that. The next game he harassed Payton so much, his coach benched him after the first half.

It is funny you say that because Jordan played the same way. MJ would simply make quick decisions on the court which is really what set him apart. Bill Russel alluded to MJ's quick decisions on the court. MJ is said to have an IQ of 160.

Charles Barkley was one of the greatest basketball players ever and someone who I really admire. He should have been on the 84 team. Bobby Knight was a crazy hardass, but he knew basketball inside and out. Jordan impressed these two guys during the 1984 Olympics to an insane degree. Knight said MJ was the best player he'd ever seen before he had ever played in an NBA game. Charles, of course, recognized that he'd have to compete with MJ and could tell immediately that that task would not be easy. The 1993 finals were awesome, with both MJ and Barkley playing phenomenal basketball.

Coach Knight had a task to do- make sure the USA wins the gold. So what if Barkley was more talented than 1/2 the guys on the squad? To play for any great coach, one has to pull their heads from their but and actually listen to sound reason. Barkley didn't want to hear anything Knight was saying, so he rightfully was cut. The decision reflects poorly on Barkley- not Coach Knight, and it really should be no surprise that a hard head like Barkley never won a single ring in all his years in the league, in spite of the great support he had surrounding him. Being a great baller is more than just being big and looking hard after a dunk, lol.

And anyone who wants to debate the leadership category he literally made the whole bulls outfit take the summer off to train with him leading the way after losing again to the pistons and they won the their first championship. If thats not leadership I dont know what is. If creating standards so high in practice the games were seen as an easier task isnt good leadership as well then I'll concede my point.

(Jordan's sincere appreciation to represent his country in the Olympics) "reminded me why Jordan's greatness was so much easier to celebrate." NAILED IT! All of the greatness of the self-proclaimed King can't be appreciated by us. Real men see through bullsht and when you say something but do another, that's hoe shit. We know Jordan said "Republicans buy shoes too" and alot of people were upset by it but in retrospect, he was magnanimous with that comment. He was saying, "You might not like what I have to say, but I won't bullsht you. I'm going to keep politics away from fking with my bag". We know Lebron is only about his bag. The difference between the two and why we can't celebrate Lebron like we celebrate Jordan is his character. Remember when Lebron was fake reading Malcolm X's book and being a "socially conscious athlete"? During that time, the Hong Kong riots break out. Instead of using this as an opportunity to live up to that "socially conscious athlete" he labeled himself, he condemned Rockets GM Darryl Morray for tweeting out support for Hong Kong protestors. He was calling him "uneducated on the subject" and that "people could have been hurt...financially". That's why we can't celebrate Lebron nor should really. We would be setting a bad example for our children if we celebrated a man like that as some sort of aspirational figure. We'd be celebrating characteristics about people that should be condemned.

I am the same age as Jordan and followed his entire career since he was a H S senior at Laney and his name was listed as an honorable mention in Street and Smith magazine , seeing his name and stats mentioned in Basketball Weekly and his picture as one of the McDonald's All Americans. I think its more than just his game that ppl go crazy about. I just think its the look especially when he did one of the greatest things by shaving his head at the right time and having other follow his lead. Even ppl with full heads of hair followed him. There have been some famous baldies. Yul Brynner, Isaac Hayes, Telly Savalas, Slick Watts, Geoffrey Holder and NOBODY made no attempts to shave their head. But just the way he moved on and off the court played with aggression but was smooth with it and made it look easy. Remember when everybody was reverse laying up the ball because he did it. The man was touched by God. God woke up and said " I just feel like making a perfect player" . After saying all that..MJ might be the best player, but Kareem is definitely the most accomplished player of all time from HS to the pros

@@Bob-Sacamano314 Slow down Sling Blade IQ. They saw him ball at North Carolina when he hit game winner as a Freshman in chip game vs Ewing's Hoyas. James Worthy, who was a Junior said that he was the best player on the team for about three weeks until that freakish Freshman to the throne. Bird, Magic, Drexler, McHale and a whole lot of future hall-of-famers saw Black Jesus when they played exhibition games against MJ's amateur squad to get them ready for 84 Olympics. A bust with no jumper is reason he dropped to #3? You're as delusional as Manson's whole family on acid trips. Back in 80s it was a big man's league. Hence why The Dream went numero uno. And since Bowie was not only a wildcat from Kentucky but a 7 footer and Drexler, who's a shooting-guard like Mike, was already blazin' trails in Portland, MJ was drafted third. Please know you're b-ball history or you're always going to sound as dumb as Bron when he said Morey "wasn't educated on the situation at hand."

Famously, George Gervin said Magic was changing the game in 8th grade. He was scrimmaging with pros already. HS champ. College Champ vs Bird (who never lost to Jordan). NBA champ. All in 4 years. Passing is part of the game. 90 pct freethrow shooter. 50pct fg. 42 points G.6 for Kareem. And yet, we gotta give it to Jordan. His airness was great on every level. I give these guys 1&2. Prime Magic was incredible. Very fast drinbler.

My favorite Knight story was when the Blazers were trying to find a center to build a team around Clyde Drexler and had the 2nd pick in the Draft. Houston had the first pick and Hakeem was the presumptive #1, so Blazer president Stu Inman was combing thru the remaining prospects at Center and put in a call to his friend and advisor, Knight. Inman asked knight, considering the Blazer roster, who he would take with the 2nd pick. Knight immediately said Jordan. Stu countered that the Blazers best player was the SF turned off guard, Clyde Drexler and the teams biggest need was by far, at center. Knight knew the Blazers roster but insisted, the Blazers needed to pick MJ if he was still available with the 2nd pick. Inman says ... "And not have a center?" To which Knight said, "Take Jordan and play him at center". It was the best advice Stu Inman got for that draft yet MJ still fell to #3 and the Bulls

I remember Peter Vescey from the NY Post was covering the tryouts for the 84 Olympic team and he would give updates every 4 days in his column and he kept saying the most surprising player at the tryouts is CHARLES BARKLEY. Only Jordan was more impressive, but Barkley was clearly the 2nd best player. I was completely shocked when Barkley didn't make the team. But at the end of day Barkley used this tryout to improve his position in the draft. But Bobby Knight shouldn't have cut him because he didn't like his body type. Barkley is the ONLY guy at 6'5" 290+ lbs could be dominant on the court. George Raveling also made a quote in the Sporting News before MJ ever played an NBA game basically saying that other players will be compared to him in the future. Raveling was Knight's assistant coach on that 84 team

He has no one to blame other than himself. In 1993 he wasn't going to beat MJ and Chicago, but losing to Houston in 1994 and 1995 were big choke jobs by Barkley and Phoenix. Phoenix was up 2-0 in 1994, proceed to lose games 3 and 4 in Phoenix, and eventually the series in 7 games. In 1995, Phoenix was up 3-1 and again lost in 7 games, including game 7 at home. The irony is that if Phoenix had made the Finals in 1994 or 1995, Chuck would have avoided MJ altogether because Jordan was retired in 1994, and wasn't quite back to full form after his return in March of 1995.

@RepentOrPerishL133
@RepentOrPerishL133 Жыл бұрын
Just because you're college player of the year doesn't mean other great players agree with the vote. They still think they are the best and the voters are wrong. It's a vote. There have been College players of the year who didn't do squat in the NBA. They never played against each other and nor met until that tryout. The didn't have AAU and traveling teams where everybody meet in camps an play and become buddies. Someone might invite you to a camp here or there but it wasn't like now. Barkley got educated on who was the best when they actually met. Same with Bird. Magic heard about him seen him on TV. It was different when he played with him one time at a camp.
@uncletony6210
@uncletony6210 Жыл бұрын
@@RepentOrPerishL133 I never said anything about "agreeing with the vote." when Charles claimed to have said, "his name is Michael Jordan..." the implication is that he had never heard of Mike before, and that he believed the person to whom he was speaking had never heard of him before, which is nonsense. Anyone associated in any way with college basketball would have known who the college player of the year was. He would have been the dude on the cover of SI and ALL of college basketball magazines.
